Read my post of today! I would send it to Pentax Service Department. They will call you with a quote. If you choose not to have it fixed, they will return the camera to you at no cost and they will pay the return shipping...

I just have to sing the praises of the Pentax Warranty Department. On Feb. 3, 2009 I sent a Pentax ist DS for them to check out a problem that I was having with the camera. On Friday, Feb. 13, 2009, I thought I should call them to make sure they received the camera. The technician that answered the phone informed me the camera had been already repaired with a new printed circuit board, cleaned and adjusted under warranty, and had already been shipped back to me. I received the camera by UPS today, Feb.16, 2009.
1. I am amazed by the repair and the 13 day turn around. That's just out standing service by Pentax.
2. I am even more amazed that the camera was repaired under warranty, considering I purchased the camera on Ebay in Aug. 2006 used!
While this is a backup camera to my K20D, it just affirms my faith in Pentax/Hoya, and the outstanding job that Ned Bunnel is doing with Pentax USA.

I have used numerous rechargable batteries with my 1st DS, however about a year ago I got a set of Ray-O-Vac Hybrids and have had excellent results from them. A couple of months later Circuit City ran a special on 8 Enloops for like $12.00 or $13.00, so I got them also. Since I have gone to all hybrid AA rechargable batteries. Since then I have done several weddings and commercial shoots, and have never had a battery problem since.

Lost!
I use the MAHA MH - C204W charger with all my "rechargables". This charger works fine the the "low discharge" AA batteries such as the Eneloops. I learned the hard way, do not trust the little chargers that come pre-pachaged with rechargable batteries. Here is a link to Thomas Distrubuting Company's web site. Thomas Distributing

I was in Circuit City today and found they have a package of 8 AA Eneloop batteries for $12.99 US. By far the cheapest price that I have seen on these batteries.

After just about giving up on buying anything from eekbay. I have just recently won a bid for a Sears 1:1.4 50mm lens from eekbay. Does anyone on this forum have any experience with this lens? I might also add that I don't think I got any bargain on this lens, I probably bought it for just about what it's worth!

I am shooting photos of hummingbirds, and would like to know if anyone has any information and how to setup "trap focus" for the Pentax DSLR camera's, specifically the Pentax ist DS?
Thank You,

I use the Tamron 28 - 300 lens with the 72mm filter ring on my Pentax ist DS. I took this photo last weekend at a High School Baseball game with this lens.
iso 800, f7.1, 1/400, zoomed to approx. 135mm for this shot.

Your opinion please!

Finn,
I have the same lens as you, the Tokina 28mm, f2.8 'A' lens, and I have never had any problems with it, as a matter of fact, it is one of my most used lens.
I have never had to make any alterations to it. However, it is the second lens of this type and brand that I have had, and the first one didn't work at all! So I would have to assume that you have a defective lens.
Good Luck,
Bill

Hey Finn,
I've managed to get some of my lens off of ebay at real bargain prices, although since I got my camera in August of last year, the price of Pentax lens has gone through the roof.
Before I buy anything I now check the prices of a couple of used camera dealers on the web (KEH Camera & Kenmore Camera) before I even look on ebay. In many cases I can buy a used lens through them cheaper than it can be bought on ebay.
Being retired for the past 5+ years sure is great, however, it has turned me into a big-time bargain hunter.
Best Wishes,
Bill

I never ceased to be amazed at the prices of new lens from Pentax, but Tamron, Sigma, and other manufactures as well and, how many amateur photographers are shelling out the huge dollars for this equipment. With my limited budget, (and I know there are many, many more people in the same circumstance that I am in), it is out of the question for me to even consider any of the new lenses available!
One of the reasons I chose Pentax, is the amount of older lens, both Pentax, and other brands that are available that will work with my 1st DS. Being retired and living on a fixed income, I have to look for ‘bargains’ for any additional lens and other equipment for my photographic hobby.
Even with budgetary limitations, I have managed to acquire a fair amount of equipment at a reasonable cost. That while may not be what many would consider first-rate equipment, still works better than than my photographic skills can utilize!
My equipment is all used, and the prices paid in US Dollars are as follows:
The Pentax 1st DS, with 18 x 55 kit lens ($400.00), Promaster FTD7000M TTL flash ($40.00), Tamron 28 x 300 LD f3.5 – f5.6 zoom lens ($65.00), Tokina 28mm f2.8 ‘A’ lens ($17.00), Pentax 50mm f2.0 ‘A’ lens ($18.00), Sears 50mm f1.7 ‘M’ lens ($16.50), Vivitar 135mm f2.8 Macro lens ($17.00), and the Promaster 1.7x automatic teleconverter ($15.00).
If you are new to the digital photographic world, don’t be discouraged, it can be done with serious bargain hunting on eBay, used camera stores, pawn shops, and even neighborhood yard sales.
Good luck,

Hi Daacon,
I second everything that GaryML said about converters. I am using the Promaster 1.7 Auto Teleconverter with the Tamron 28 -300 XL lens, and it looks remarkably like the Pentax 1.7 teleconverter! The results have not been as good as I would like. So I gave up on using it on autofocus because I could manually focus the lens faster and more accurately.
I was attempting to shoot some of my grandson basketball games with the Teleconverter, and I found that I was far better off using an old Pentax 135mm 2.5 telephoto lens that I used with my old reliable Pentax Super Program film camera. With a decent post processing program this lens did a far better job than the Tamron 28 - 300 did.
Good Luck,
Bill

If your not hung up on auto focus, I would suggest you seriously look at one of the older Pentax 135mm telephoto lens, at f2.5, or f2.8. They can sometimes be had for well under $100 on ebay or even your local camera shop.

Roy,
Thanks for your response. You just have to know how it is when we have a new toy that we just have to play with, even though the weather is lousy, and conditions are horrible, we just got to take some pictures with our Sears Auto f1.7 lens that we have had for about two weeks eBay.
I have to say that at this time I am very satisfied with my $20.00 eBay lens. It seems to work fine with my istDS camera.
Thanks

Most definitely go with a genuine Pentax M42 screw mount adapter. There are some real horror stories about some who have tried the cheaper adapters off of ebay!!
That's my story and I stickin' to it!

Thanks for all the information. All that I have gotten on this lens indicates the it is not an "A" lens but is the same as a 'K' or 'M'. This doesn't disappoint me as shooting in the manual mode is not something that is new to me! Lastly, I bought the lens cheap enough (off ebay, $20.50), that I can use it as a paper weight if all else fails, ha!!!!

I recently (like tonight) acquired a Sears 1:1.7 k-mount lens for my ist DS on ebay, the lens is marked "automatic". Is this lens like an "A" lens from Pentax? Anybody have any information on this lens?
