ideas for new 645z?

Didn’t Adam prove in his 645z review that there is a bunch of empty space inside the 645z body that could be deleted and would reduce the size of the camera by about 30-40mm? He put up a photo of it.

Agree on dialing in long exposure, maybe up to 1h would be good.

Also with 100MP, a feature where if you have a prime lens fitted, it can show virtual crops of other focal lengths so you can decide on what lens to use before changing. I use my iPhone for this now and it’s brilliant. In camera would be even better.

I don’t feel he was brand bashing.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to keep moving forward with your photography system as one’s skills mature. Pentax unfortunately isn’t the brand for that, not in 645.

I sold my 645z system in its entirety due to some personal issues and am now using mirrorless. If there were an updated 645 system from Pentax released I’d be all over it in a heartbeat. The user experience is of primary concern to me and my 645z had it in spades.

However, it missed the mark in a lot of areas also. Too heavy body, new lenses too heavy and big, lack of electronic shutter options caused missed opportunities.

If Pentax re-released the system with a more MP, more compact body (with mirror, it’s possible), a few key primes equal to 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 90mm, 150mm all which were f/4, small(ish), light and high performing then they would have a winner. No big heavy zooms. Any user wanting to shoot landscape and travel needs at a minimum a system that can reach from 24mm to 150mm (200 with cropping).

Probably not worth discussing though as the chances of it happening are about as good as winning the Tuesday lotto jackpot.

No idea. I’ve never shot film. I know that ray angles were not as important for image sharpness on film due to the way the light hits the surface of the film rather than having to reach deep into a pixel well on a sensor. So in saying that the 28-45 might do just fine on film.

The other issue you might have shooting the 28-45 lens on film is that it’s a DA lens and won’t cover the entire frame of 645 film as it was made for a crop sensor, so probably not your best choice. The D FA 35mm would be better I guess.

I am not using DSLR concepts to imagine whats going on. What I am saying is that what Ed appears to be seeing is the ray angle from the 28-45 being the opposite of what is required for the GFX sensor. I can not say for Pentax but I would imagine that the 28-45 was made to provide a relatively straight ray angle to the sensor, just like other 645 lenses. We have been using wides and teles on the P645 chips for years without issue so why all of a sudden is that particular lens having issues on the Fuji sensor, the distance from the back of the lens to the sensor is the same as it is on the 645z.

It would be interesting to see how the 28-45 performs on the GFX 50s II, being the same resolution at the 645z. Perhaps the issue is that the 28-45 just does not have a high enough resolving power for the 100MP sensor.

K3 mkIII Dynamic Range - Issues or not?

Thanks for sharing these.

I have just loaded them into Capture One Pro V22, pushed the exposure +4 stops (maximum) and raised the shadows to +100. What can I say? The results for ISO400 are nothing short of exceptional. No banding, no pink, noise is a very fine grain (with no playing around with NR other than the C1 default settings. I can only imagine how good ISO 100 files must look.

I would expect these results from a full frame camera such as a K1 or D850 or Canon R5 of which I have tested all of them (owned a K1 and now have an R5).

Now, not that I think I have ever added +4 to exposure and +100 to shadows. But I have added say +1 or +1.5 to an exposure and then added say +80 to shadows on a difficult landscape scene where grad filters were not an option. It is good to know that the K3-III is capable of this sort of image quality.

I might just have to buy one when they come up on sale next.

Hi.
Just watching this video on YouTube which shows what can only be said as terrible shadow recovery on the new K3 III.

Has anybody here tested this? Is there something that he is missing.

I have noticed that the DR on the K1 II has a similar issue in tests online compared to the mark I, could it be related to the accelerator chip?

Happy to hear anybodys thoughts, as I am keen on a K3 III.

Starts at around 13:40 into the video.

Interesting reading about Ed’s experiences with the GFX. I find it odd though that the 28-45 had issues on the GFX sensor though, as the lens is designed for a larger distance from the sensor so the ray angle would be more straight on to the sensors edges, not more acute.

The issues seen on mirrorless were typically lenses made for Leicas with a steep ray angle and having a non optimized sensor on a Sony mirrorless for example. Ed’s experience is almost the opposite, where the GFX sensor has been made for a steep ray angle and the pixel well structure is blocking light that is coming in more directly.

However, this does not explain his success with the longer focal length lenses.

The reason why I use an SLR camera along with mirrorless models - Takuma Kimura

Well with my mirrorless I just set up the camera on the tripod and start shooting. When I had an OVF I would pick the lens that I thought suitable, pop it on and then move around with my camera looking through the viewfinder to see the scene before setting up the tripod. I find that doing that method with the EVF is not as useful by a long shot.

What’s interesting about the talk of the OVF vs EVF is that now I am using a mirrorless Canon R5 for most of my shooting, I can never recall what the look of the scenery was like when I get back to my computer for editing. When I was shooting with a 645Z I can still today distinctively remember what the light was like at the scene at that moment. Perhaps it was the OVF that burnt the scene into my memory.

I have just bought a used KP for fun along with a new HD FA 31mm. It will be interesting to see how I feel after using it for candid travel and walk around shooting if I remember the scenes any better.

Also wondering if there might be a new Pentax MF camera coming. Fuji recently has engaged in a new marketing campaign branding their GFX cameras as “large format”. I wonder if they know something that we do not, and are positioning their offering to appear better than crop MF in anticipation for a Pentax release which clearly would be a MF offering, crop or otherwise.

I hope to see Pentax “re-enter” the MF market with a newly revised 645 camera, still crop MF, 100MP, plus a couple of new high performance f/4.5 zooms (45-90mm, 90-180mm perhaps) and a 30mm prime lens all for landscape users.

This would be a joy to see. Keep the optical viewfinder too, but shrink the existing body a little where possible and give us all the mod-cons such as electronic shutter, bulb mode like the K1, articulating screen like the K1, much faster processor for zooming and reviewing.

Pentax can’t compete with Fuji so they need to stay on point with their brand mission. Speaking with now Fuji 100MP users that have tried their Pentax FA glass on the Fuji and said that it doesn’t hold up, new lenses from Pentax is what it will take for success.

I would jump straight back in!

Scott

DFA 21mm Limited - Lens hood and filters

I have read it yes. And they go into great detail about landscape use but also wanting to make a lens that feels good in the hand and makes the user want to go out and use the lens, an enjoyable experience. Once again no mention of the design requirement for a fixed hood, only that speed of use once removing the lens cap was important. This can still be achieved with a screw on hood.

---------- Post added 01-02-22 at 06:41 AM ----------

I somewhat agree. However I feel that in their pursuit of making a 21mm lens that is a limited series lens fitting to the history, plus has this joy to hold factor, that got in the way of truly making an exceptionally versatile lens. You are right in saying that there is lack of choice. Pentax are making what they know will capture the hearts and minds of their existing clients, not building a system that is a solid proposition for both existing and new users.

---------- Post added 01-02-22 at 06:46 AM ----------

I once owned a Leica Super Elmar 21mm f/3.4 (current model) with a screw on lens hood and the lens barrel had a thread on the outside and a bump stop so that the screw on hood stopped right where it needed to align it. The fit and finish was superb and never missed a beat. The visual join between the hood and body was exceptional and almost invisible. Pentax could have achieved this very easily with this new DFA 21mm lens and fulfilled all of their requirements of design and functionally.

---------- Post added 01-02-22 at 06:56 AM ----------

I understand. I just wish that on this forum there could be more discussion about what could be better, rather than just accept what Pentax has done and the “move on if you don’t like it” ending to most attempts at thoughtful discussion.

I love the brand, it’s close to my heart, I am back into the brand now after selling my 645z (to you Sandy I believe), the DFA 21 gives the warm and fuzzy feeling but I just wish it ticked one more box for me to make it truly sensational rather than having to get another lens on top just to cover something basic that the manufacturer really should have thought about.

---------- Post added 01-02-22 at 06:59 AM ----------

I did think about that, but would need to have a lens to test if mounting the adapter so far out the front would induce any vignetting from the adapter ring and mount, which it likely would do.

Says who? If that’s the case it shouldn’t have a filter thread.

What it is, is Pentax tugging the heart strings of die-hard Pentaxians by creating another Limited lens that those will surely buy without question, but forgetting about what a real useful field lens must have.

Different lenses for different folks I know, as Sandy suggested. But if you’re going to do one, at least do the other as well.

I am aware, yes. I have a significantly superior filter set to the Lee system and anyway, a new system would cost more than the new DFA 21mm lens.

It seems clear that it’s an unpopular opinion to suggest what I have, so I’ll evaluate it for myself and make the right choice.

I have a feeling if you did a good job on the modification, later upon putting it on the buy/sell forum here it would fetch as much as an unmodified, likely more as others would also see value in it.

---------- Post added 01-01-22 at 11:54 AM ----------

So we are meant to keep two lenses and two filter sets, yeah that sounds like a great idea.

---------- Post added 01-01-22 at 12:00 PM ----------

That aside, still no reason it could not be done like Leica and be screw off/on and fully integrated.

I might have to look at a Zeiss ZF 21mm and change the mount to Pentax. Still, would be nice to have a small landscape lens that has AF when you need it.

I appreciate that also, however with an external thread on the body of the lens, a fully integrated but removable lens hood could have been achieved and allow for the lens cap just in the same way that Leica and Zeiss do it.

Just seems like a waste is all.

---------- Post added 01-01-22 at 10:04 AM ----------

That may be the case, but cost is not an issue when you already own them, which would likely be the case for a lot of landscape shooters.

Considering Pentax sits high in the tree of landscape oriented camera systems, this looks like an oversight. Pentax owners will invest in the lens regardless however, due to the cache and lure of the limited series and fulfilling the set of limited primes.

I am considering buying one and literally cutting the hood off with a Dremel or similar just to get what I want.

I have been looking at the new 21mm as an option for landscape work. Does anybody else find it odd that Pentax released a full frame 21mm lens that can’t be used with any filter kits such as 100x100mm grads?

The inclusion of a fixed metal lens hood just seems like madness for such a lens. Considering that the only other wide angle lens for FF is the 15-30 which also has a built in fixed hood, it looks like a massive oversight.

I get it that they made it fit with the other limited lenses, but at least it could have had a form fitting screw thread lens hood like the Leica 21mm lens does. It would have looked just as good but have the added functionality.

Any thoughts?

Pentax K1 or Canon R5

Thanks for all the responses. To clear up a few questions below:

- I sold the 645z system for two reasons, lack of lenses to suit my needs (no ultra-wide for astro, no manageable 70-200 type lens either), lack of interest from Pentax to grow the lineup and also I damaged my hand last year and needed to downsize my kit a little in weight. I found when I travelled I was needing to take both the 645 kit with 3 lenses and the 5D4 kit just to cover my bases for the shooting that I like to do. I want one system that can handle ultra-wide to tele and everything in between.

- Canon does have an adapter, but there is none available anywhere. I have a R5 in my hands for testing and need to make a decision to keep it but I can not even use it with my lenses, only a loaner 14mm samyang that I have been given, which is a terrible lens

- I know I can use my EF lenses adapted, but ultimately the move to RF glass is on the cards. I can build an entire pentax system with a K1, KP and all lenses for less than the price of the R5 and 70-200 lens

- I will not be moving to Fuji MF, do not like it one bit.

- Having used the K1 when it did not have the electronic first curtain shutter, which is important for perfectly sharp images, I do not know what the K1 with latest firmware or the K1mkII is like now, could be a different beast. I sure did love the controls and feel of the camera when I used it back in 2016. Is the AF any better on the mark II camera? I found it lacking with the 15-30 just in single centre point focus, it would not lock on to the same spot every time and I had a bunch of missed photos.

Pentax K1 or Canon R5

Hi guys

Recently I sold up all of my Pentax 645z system and have been using my existing Canon 5Dmk4 system with 16-35/4, 24-70/4 and 70-200/4.

I have been looking at the new R5 mirrorless and ultimately this would involve a whole re-investment into new lenses (which are absurdly expensive), so it got me thinking about the Pentax system again and what the possibilities could be.

I must admit, I miss the solid feel and very mechanical workings of my 645 system and having used the new Canon R5 this week, it has very little soul as a camera as its basically all computer.

I have used an original K1 briefly in 2016 for a trip when it came out and only had the 15-30 lens, which while the results were stellar, the AF I felt was unreliable at best.

So the question is...........do I move back to Pentax or move to mirrorless. Obviously I won't get the amazing on-sensor AF that the R5 has, or eye detect etc, but most of my shooting is slow considered landscape and travel photos.

I want to feel connected to the camera and to something mechanical and solid, something that I feel I might miss with the mirrorless. There has to be an enjoyment factor there for me with the gear too.

Can you convince me of all of the positives of the K-1 system that I might be missing?

PS, I would probably get the new flagship crop body to compliment the system as well.

Cheers, Scott

Other option is the Zeiss Milvus 18mm f/2.8. I know somebody selling one at a good price. It can be modified also with Leitax.

Only issue I see with it is a little vignetting. Performance wise it looks exceptional.
