I was travelling in Japan in 2013 and had been toying with the idea of trying a DSLR but was afraid of the complexity of the cameras.
So I bought the Q10, thinking to try an affordable version of a DSLR. Instead of listening to a photographer friend who was advising me to go with Nikon or Canon, I went with Pentax as 1) the pretty colours, 2) I remember Pentax being a good brand from growing up in the 70's and 80's, 3) the pretty colours .
I liked the idea of the small camera and enjoyed a month with it. However, I found that I could not use it when it was raining or snowing. So, before leaving Japan, I bought a K30 with weather proof lens and knew that I was getting a lot of bang for my bucks compared to other brands with that camera.

3 weeks playing with my new toy and I'm so glad that the Da*55 can be used in full frame. It was my favorite on the K-30.
These were taken at a recent workshop in Melbourne.

Thanks for the reply Digitalis. The wireless flash setup would be a lot cheaper than getting a ring flash and I need a separate flash anyway. I can also look into a flash bracket and diffuser. Whilst waiting I might try Baro-nite suggestion:)

Some beautiful pictures here which make me drool with envy. I guess I better start saving for the ring flash and that 77 ltd. Does any one have experience with the Pentax 080c ring flash using a K5 or K-30/50? I read that I'd need to use 1/4 power and stop down with it. Is it worth getting using this or wait and save?

Nice indeed Digitalis. Could you enlighten me regarding your flash setup?

Thank you for the feedback. I suspect that the focus being slightly off with the leaf and the pansy could be due to the wind present on the day and also the fact that I tend to take my spectacles off when using the camera's viewfinder. I ended up using f/25 aperture trying to get as much as I could in focus not knowing about the diffraction issues of the lens. I think I'll practice macro indoors to avoid the complication caused by wind whilst learning.
Bruce has nailed my main issue with composition: what is the subject of my picture and how best to bring it out. I've been looking at Youtube videos on the subject and browsing through Flickr but forgot the forums here where I've received good advice before.

I'm always stuggling with light when I try macro hence the tripod. It seems that I can't away without a macro flash set-up (thanks for the link schnitzer79). Do you folks use live view and manual focus?

Hi folks,
I like macro photography but I've been using my DFA 100 more as a telephoto lens since I got it as I'm disappointed with my efforts. As well as technical skills, I struggle with composition (see exhibit untiltled 1). Even with a tripod I struggle with capturing sharp images. Advice (please be gentle) would be welcome. Just looking at the exif in preview I'm embarrassed to se that the first pic was actually taken with my DA*55. Maybe I should take that to another thread? These pics have had some Lightroom work for exposure, white balance and in case of pic 1, cropping. Thank you in advance.

Hello and thanks vagrant10 & Hans . I did not know what cross processing was until you mentioned it and had to search google. It looks like it but I'm not sure: I adjusted the white balance in lightroom as the original "awb" shot was not that great, added some clarity and loved how it turned up.
I'm amazed how good the shots made with the Q and Q10 posted here actually are. I now pity the fools who brush this little gem off because of it's small sensor.

Hi bibi,
I'm new here myself with a 3 day old K-30. I can empathize with the angst you went through with the research and finally making the decision...But for the PentaxForums I would have gone with a Nikon.
Hope you enjoy your new baby.

Mamba909, I'll save for the DA*55 while learning to use the K-30 with the 18-135.

Thanks for the welcome folks.
I went out in Tokyo on my last day here and took some pics at Asakusa. A bit nervous at first carrying the camera around looking like a tourist, definitively more conspicuous than the Q10 but soon relaxed and was snapping away happily.
Wullemaha, How's your experience with the 50mms? I had to resist LBA today as I had to get pressies for my parents in the UK. I'm off back to Melbourne tomorrow.

Hello All,
after purchasing the Q10 a few months ago and having fun with it I still felt the need for something more substantial. I lurked on the PentaxForums and was trying to decide between a K5 II and the K30. A pro photographer friend was advising me to go the canikon route but my heart was with Pentax.
So today I bought the K30 with the 18-135mm and I'm lusting after the DA 50mm 1.8 that the salesman let me try on. Maybe I should save a bit more and get the DA*55mm as it is also weather sealed.
I hope to be able to develop my skills and someday post some on this site.
Thanks to all the contributors that have helped me make my decision.
