Wow! Pathdoc you gave me much more to think about. Good way in future thinking...if I were to get another camera body, considering what lenses are purchased now and how that will impact my choices down the road! You seem to really know your stuff!

Thanks for your insight!

Thanks Des!

You took what I said and broke it down so nicely! I am not afraid to up the amount to spend, although I want to take into consideration how much I will actually use the lens. My 12-24 is brought with me on every vacation. The only time I don't use it is during a full-out rainstorm. So, I do need something to switch to, in fact possibly a couple lenses. AF is something I am looking for, I don't really enjoy manual, especially in the some of the scenarios I am in, I want to get a shot and move to the next photo op.

I'm curious, you mentioned some aftermarket lenses. I have always believed that Pentax lenses are some of the best. Would you tend to stick with Pentax, or do you adventure to other brands like mentioned about?

You now have me thinking about the WR 18-135mm. This would cause me to not have to bring my WR 18-55mm & WR 50-200mm. It certainly would be more versatile - what is your perspective on quality compared to the two WR I currently have?

I am beginning to think it would be good to snag the PENTAX DA 50MM F1.8 LENS for the price and consider the WR 18-135mm depending on reviews.

You rock!

Pathdoc thanks for coming back with your afterthoughts in another post. Knowing that I pretty much bring my "heavy" 12-24mm everywhere, do you think it would be worth while to purchase a 16-85mm? I am just wondering if at such a low range, would it take equally as good a photo as the 12-24mm in that range? The 18-135mm would bring more versatility for a greater reach, but if I research and discover that near the latter range of the lens is weaker, then it may not be as worth - and also depending on what the 16-85mm brings to the table in its zoom range (50-85mm). After reading your post, it raises some very good questions. Perhaps you have some of these answers? :)

Hey robthebloke!

Thanks for piping in on the conversation. I just read the thread and it seems that people lean more toward the FA77. I like the idea of the "3D" pop of an image. It would seem from the thread that the DA50 does the job, but the FA77 does it a couple steps better. *sighs

I think now for me, I need to choose, do I want to spend more for quality and knowing that I won't be using it on a day-to-day basis, but happy knowing I have that lens for what it does OR spend less for a lens that will do the job, but maybe not be a sharp - also knowing I won't be using it all the time. Although, maybe it would make me want to use it more if the images are stellar.

Would the FA77 be something you'd bring on vacations with you?

Kozlok you and Des are on the same page. I hadn't really considered the 35mm. I am beginning to strongly think about the 50mm & 18-135mm. Looks like you have a number of lenses. I appreciate the advice!

Hi Adam,

Thank you for your timely response. Your perspective is really wonderful to have! That video was helpful. It is a bargain, part of the reason why I was thinking of purchasing it, along with the many positive reviews. I just took a look at the SMC Pentax-DA* 55mm F1.4 SDM and it certainly seems to get similar reviews. I like the WR feature. I may have to go in to a store and check both lenses out to see (which may be a bad idea because I will more than likely want the latter of the two haha!).

Cheers!

Hi Driline,

I appreciate you taking the time to provide some input. I find purchasing a lens daunting... I am going to compare the two 55mm and check a some more reviews of the SMC Pentax-DA* 55mm F1.4 SDM. I am curious now about the SMC Pentax-FA 77mm F1.8 Limited - I'll do a bit more research - do you own this lens? I am not really into lengthy zooms, I hardly use my WR 55-200mm. I have heard great things about this lens. Do you use this often for portraits, or more for a zoom? Had for a song...does that mean you can find them at a good price?

Thanks!

Greetings!

I am an avid traveler and enjoy capturing memories of my adventures, like most photographers. Last year I purchased a Pentax 12-24 prior to visiting Ireland and it was one of the best purchases I've made. The lens truly brought landscapes to life in a digital photo. I have used also in Mexico several times and the colours and crisp photos are truly remarkable! I also have the two WR kit lenses that came with the K-30. They are okay...but not my favourite. I find the colour doesn't "pop" like my 12-24mm does. I know they truly are much better than some of the kit lenses that come from Canon/Nikon from what I've read. I did use the WR 18-55mm when it was raining in Ireland and it did capture some pretty nice shots.

I am now looking for a lens which has great bokeh for portrait photographs (more than likely for outdoor/indoor photographs of my friends/family and my little puppy). I am by no means an expert when it comes to lenses, I like to research and read reviews prior to making any purchases. I am leaning toward the PENTAX DA 50MM F1.8 LENS. It seems to have fantastic reviews, just not sure if it will work the best for what I'm planning on using it for. I'm not sure if this lens will cause me to have to get up really close to the person posing or if I can be a distance away and still capture a sharp image.

Any help or suggestions of lenses would be most appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

Tim

Hi Everyone,

Again, thank you for your timely support. I am far delayed in getting back to this thread, my apologies. I found out what went wrong with my camera for those of you that are interested.

The Aperture Control Unit went on the K-30. It is disappointing as it was not used a lot prior to this happening and it was only coming on two years old. Thank goodness I bought it on VISA so it extended the warranty. It cost $368 to have it replaced and cleaned.

Hope this helps anyone else who may encounter this same problem.

Cheers!

Thanks everyone! It is severely underexposed. I have some screen shots but the site will not allow me to upload from my phone, it just keeps saying "uploading".

I will have to take it in for repair. It's sad, I love the photo quality. I don't use the camera a lot - only on vacations, trips or special occasions. And for something like this to happen, it's very disappointing. It is only under 1 1/2 years old. Sighs.

I won't be able to upload a photo as I don't have my laptop. I could only snap a photo from my phone and upload that.

How can I return it to normal metering?

Adam you're so helpful - thank you! 😊

Hi Adam,

It's in my resort room. I could take a photo when I get back. What would I do if that's the case? Also I don't know how or what EXIF is...

Thanks!

Greetings!

I am on vacation in Mexico and went to take some photos with my K-30 and noticed every photo I took when using the viewfinder would produce a black photograph when reviewing - but when I use the live screen to take the photo, they turn out perfectly clear. I am heading to the Mayan Temples tomorrow and was hoping that someone has encountered this before and could tell me what to do or if some setting has changed accidentally.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Lens Suggestions? Help!?

Greetings!

I recently (within the past few months) purchased a K-30 kit (in black) from Costco and I am really enjoying it immensely! What a great little camera with great flexibility and features! The kit contained both the WR 18-55 & WR 50-200. I just returned from my trip to Paris, Rome & Greece and had a lot of fun taking photos. I am now really interested in purchasing some different lenses and I need some help from all you pros out there. :)

Wide Angle Zoom Lens:
I am seriously considering the Pentax 12-24. I was really saddened during my trip not having a wide angle and the reviews on the 12-24 seem amazing! Who here in Pentax land has used this lens compared to other Wide Angle Zooms? What are the thoughts out there? What suggestions do you have?

Zoom Lens:
I have been researching a bit and it would seem having the Pentax WR 55-300 would be a good investment for the money (based on the reviews). I like the WR feature as well. I don't use my Zoom a lot, I am more so into architecture and some landscape. That being said, after being in Rome, I did use my WR 50-200 a number of times to capture some ancient writing and statues high atop some ruins and buildings. Suggestions out there? Again it will not be used a lot, but something more sharp and crisp would be great (rather not pay a lot as it will be used less).

Portrait Zoom Lens:
Also, I have the kit WR 18-55 (most of us probably do as it is a staple). It takes a nice photo, but not all the time. What other recommendations (if any) for an all around semi-zoom/portrait similar to the 18-55, but which takes better photos? This would be for the day-to-day shots, out and about, hiking etc. Or, would most just recommend to stay with the kit WR 18-55?

All-in-all I believe I would like to stick with Pentax regime of lenses, but open again to suggestions.

Filters:
On a side-note. If I am going to purchase the Pentax 12-24 or any newer lenses what filters are recommended? I have a couple Tiffen currently (not overly impressed). I have heard that Hoya is the better option for filters. Any thoughts regarding that as well? I'd like to purchase a nice polarizer for my wide angle when I decide to purchase.

Thanks for your help in advance, it certainly will be welcomed and most appreciated as I am newer to the Pentax digital world coming from a Canon G10. :)

Cheers!

Tim

I finally got the answers. I contacted the Sigma rep here in Canada and he was not familiar with it. He in-turn contacted Sigma in Japan and this is what he found out about the lens itself:

The product name is: Zoom Beta II 60-200mm F4-5.6.
We started producing it in 1986, and it was discontinued in 1987.
There were both MF version and AF version, and AF one was only designed for Minolta mount.

Followings are the specifications of the lens;

Lens Construction: 12 elements in 9 groups
Angle of View: 40-12 degrees
Minimum Aperture: 22-32
Minimum Focusing Distance: 150cm
Maximum Magnification: 1:6.5
Filter Size: 52mm
Dimensions: Diameter 72mm x Length 84.5mm (AF version), 65mm x 83.5mm (MF version)
Weight: 490g (AF version), 415 (MF version)

Hi jatrax!

It fits perfectly on my K-1000 with no trouble. The writing is pretty much whiped off from all the use this lens had previously received. There is something written beside MACRO, but it is not legible, unfortunately. I don't see anything written near the aperture ring. *sighs.

Maybe I could contact Sigma and ask them about the lens? That could be interesting? Thanks for helping me along with uncovering this mystery! It's certainly is intriguing now!

You rock! :)

Hi jatrax!

Thanks for helping so much with this. I took a couple photos of the lens for you to check out! I randomly picked it up on Kijiji from a lady selling some older equipment. When I get my camera I will take some test photographs for sure! :)

You Rock!

That would be fantastic! I will sent you a message for sure. I am going to Paris/Rome/Greece at the end of May and I have to go early-May to TO for work and to pick up my K-30 bundle, so it would be in June that we can get together. It is going to be wonderful to have my new camera to take photos in Europe - hopefully I will be able to figure out how to use it prior to departing! Haha!

I will for sure go check out your photos! :)

That is awesome! We should all get together. I'm sure you could probably teach me a lot about the K-30! That is a beautiful photo. I was planning on going to Peggy's cove for a day to test out my new Pentax when it arrives! Are there many more Pentax users from around Halifax on the fourm?

Greetings Pentax friends!

I've recently purchased a Pentax K-30 (black body) from Costco.com with two WR lenses (18-55mm & 50-200mm) in a bundle. I was really torn between the black body and the color blue. Haha! It was a fantastic deal. I've read so many reviews and watched so many YouTube videos that displays how incredibly awesome this WR DSLR truly is. I am very excited to begin my photography journey with the K-30.

I have a Canon G10 and decided to upgrade. I also have a Pentax K-1000 which is in pristine condition. My grandmother left it to me when she passed away. Such a classic staple of a camera. It still works perfectly.

I look forward to learning the ins and outs of my K-30 and will appreciate any tips, thoughts and direction from any of your pros!

Cheers!

Tim
