"I think what you're saying is that you use the face- and subject-detection auto modes, which I believe means you have to use the larger (gray) autofocus areas, correct? In my experience that makes it hard to get the camera to focus on the particular subject you want to. It'll usually focus on something, but maybe not the kid you had in mind. How do you deal with that?"

Hi, not the fully autmated one (which is the grey one, I think), where the camera chooses the subject. But the expanded area zone (the red one, I think). It uses the AE-Sensor to help find/track the focus.

Don't know how you do / your set-up. But my experience (also with soccer) is quite the opposite. Same equipment. K-3 iii, the plm and the dfa*.

The plm is quicker for 1st focus and also focus precision. But when it comes to tracking, the DFA* 70-200 2.8 is better than all the other lenses I have. The tracking speed and related AF-precision is more than sufficient for me. The plm for example struggles with contrast edges (goal net, perimeter advertising, ...), which the dfa* rarely does. I rarely take the plm to sports event. Images can be found in the German Pentax forum: Pentax D-FA* HD 70-200mm / F2.8 ED DC AW - Lens Club* ? Pentaxians

I use the AF set-up linking the AF-Modul with the AE-Modul (called "PENTAX Real-time Scene Analysis System" by Pentax). Color plays a role then in AF-precision. Red shirt are better than yellow or green one, with respect to AF-precision. Imaging Power | PENTAX K-3 Mark III | RICOH IMAGING Image Tracking | PENTAX K-3 Mark III | RICOH IMAGING

A note: I managed to reconfigure two Nikon Cactus V6ii ones (Nikon Cactus have the same hot shoe as the Pentax variant) to Pentax HSS ones (PEN.A.005). Work fine in operation also.

I make a new thread. With the hope that somebody can help. A question on a product, that doesn't exist any more.

Does anybody have the Cactus V6 ii Firmware "PEN.A.001" available that he could provide? I guess the FW can be applied to any Cactus V6 ii, such that a Cactus that is running today on e.g. Nikon could be converted to a Pentax one?

PS I have 3 of them which I usually use. Now one doesn't work any more, but I could get 2 Cactus configured on a different system. I hope by applying the Pentax Cactus software, I could make use of them.Question was 1st posted here:Cactus set to Relase New Firmware the Cactus V6ii for Pentax - PentaxForums.com

Everybody needs to find his own way that works for him. I like that you show images along.

I would make a difference between initial focus, where I agree that the PLM is quicker and more concise. And tracking. For tracking the 70-200 works better for me. I use the 70-200 without the tripod mount and without a monopod/tripod. For the images you show, there was a lot of light, contrast lines, which the PLM needs more than the 70-200. For different light, e.g. an overcast day, the situation can be quite different to my experience.

I don't know what you normally do, so no suggestion here.

You will love the 70-200 2.8, I bet. The max aperture opening makes a big difference to the AF. If you remove the tripod mount, it is also not too heavy.

The problem with the 50-100 1.8 is, that it is a very specialized lens. While a 70-200 F2.8 type for APSC 50-135 F2.8 is such a common lens, that it is hard to live without. (I use the older 50-150 F2.8 HSM from Sigma, which is on the long end so la-la).

Nothing to add.

Used market on top end DSLRs with a shutter count of less than 10000, there are plenty. The same is valid for almost new lenses. As a serious hobbyist focusing on images rather then image acquiring units, times are great.

I don't really understand this counting discussion for light collection. A pixel would have 2 green, one blue, one red (Understanding Digital Camera Sensors). To understand how much light is gathered, the quantum efficiency as function of wave length needs to be considered. Sensitivity to green is much higher compared to blue or red (filtered on top). 1EV better (K-3 iii color vs mon) was given from the practical side so far. That is also about the difference between FF vs APSC on similar sensor technology.

Note that currently for the FA limited, on PL5 the software doesn't differ between the SMC and HD Versions, it updates the profiles to the HD Versions. Whether you want it or not. This is a recognized bug. DXO promised to solve the bug with the next update which was stated to take around 1 month.

What is the advantage to go for a 24-90 F4?

Common with other makers is 24-105 F4. Size and weight are determined by the lower end i.e. the 24mm F4, no?

What Lens Do You Use the Most?

The question should really be, which focal length do you use most.To me it is the "normal" length - since I use APSC only, it is around the 30-35mm too.

Don't ask me why, but if I operate the 16-85mm Zoom, very often the focal length in the exifs read 31mm. That is my most often used lens for versatility reasons. Whenever I do not need the versatility, it is the FA 31mm limited.

New firmware for K3 III and K-1 introduced season specific shooting modes

I am pretty sure, that even that the GR III has no AE-Sensor it has a image parameterized Db for comparison. Using the full sensor, that should have a tendency to be even bigger.

I wrote "could". Could also be the OS. Could also be the impact of the touch screen. Could be that the new processors allow larger i.e. better raw to jpg software processing, ...

Who knows.
