In case anyone is wondering, that entire site appears to revolve around Borg (Pentax) telescopes.

Very cool. That definitely helps narrow it down. I'd did google, but it looks like I misspelled it. I was mostly curious what the optic part is technically called.

Not sure. To me, it kind of looks like a viewfinder on an vintage medium format dual lens.

Wow. Instantly turning k mount lenses into telescopes is a VERY cool idea. I'm so glad know about this accessory now. Definitely going to try it. Thank you.

Mostly interested in the "eyepiece" screen attached to the small scope. The roll holder appears to be separate. This piece doesn't appear to be electronic.

Getting more people to pay full price for a GPS unit couldn't hurt them.

Regardless of any defense to limitations, this is the 1st time I've been irked with Pentax in over 20 years. The concerns are legitimate.

PENTAX K-01: "Equipped with the PENTAX O-GPS1 device (an optional GPS unit launched in June 2011), the K-01’s SR system helps astrophotographers track and shoot celestial bodies."

Still waiting...:asleep:

You are correct. There is not any physical reason for this.

In fact, the K-01 was advertised as being a camera FOR Astrotracer use in it's press release...AND someone in these forums allegedly actually got it to work once on accident. Having trouble finding that particular post again. I will repost it here (and elsewhere) and ask more questions about the mystery K-01 Astrotracer phographer when and if I can "track" *pun intended* the post down again.

I'm very eager to see the camera's full potential as well.

All those concerned should call Pentax so that they are aware this is a EXTREMELY wanted feature for K-01. Definitely not a passing fancy.

Astrotracer is simply awesome.

The press release way back when for the K-01 said it was capable of using Astrotracer. Another member here said he actually got it to work on accident. Without much elaboration though.

You're probably right though, it's probably too good to be true at this point.

You can do astrophotos using the "hat method" even if you don't have a tracking mount and shutter release.

Weasner's "Hat Trick" Method Astrophotography Page

I've achieved fairly decent results with just a camera and and tripod by using a fairly high ISO between 3 and 10 seconds.

That is correct. But it does work with the k-01. Every GPS feature is enabled for that particular camera EXCEPT the Astrotracer function. It's driving me nuts. Crossing fingers the next firmware update will address this.

As a general rule, the lower the f ratio, the fewer seconds are needed to achieve a proper exposure.

"Hyperstar" attachment is an excellent example of this. Pricey combo though.

A t-mount is essential for prime focus. A tracking equatorial mount opens up a whole new world, but also expensive. Alt/az mounts can work but over 30 seconds trailing occurs. A field derotator can correct this, also expensive. But a Nexstar 6 with hyperstar (focal reducer) can eliminate all of these problems.

I really really REALLY want pentax Astrotracer enabled for my k-01...still waiting (im certainly not the only one). If you have a compatable camera, I would highly suggest getting one. It's the easiest and most fun way to get into taking GREAT astrophotos. No mount, no focal reducer, no field derotator, it's just one of the greatest features I've ever seen in a camera.

Hello everyone, I Just bought a k-01 for astrophotography/ terrestrial (nature). Saw some GREAT info. in these forums so I finally de-lurked and joined.

The best picture I have ever seen anywhere of M42 is on this site (done with a Pentax camera) and I hope to learn from everyone and eventually contribute.

Also looking to learn how to make quality music videos eventually.
