Lens Clubs - Index
I have always enjoyed roaming around the lens club sub-forum and it's many threads. These reflect the diverse experience, interests and obsessions of the esteemed members of PF. The only problem I've had is that due to the way it's grown in terms of organisation it's a bit , let's say, idiosyncratic. The daily updates to threads also means they are constantly moving in terms of which page they are on. It's a mixture of lens or brand specific sections and a big dollop of "this is my special interest". All very good but not that easy if you're looking for something specific and not the best way to find new stuff. So I thought I'd organise it a little bit if only for my own purposes.
So below is a sort of index which you may find useful. Three sections - single lenses , lens types and then a miscellany. It's a bit arbitrary but I hope it helps you find the area you are looking for. Please let me know of the inevitable mistakes - I don't know all these lenses so I may have got something wrong - it's happened before :-)
I will add further short descriptions and thread count - the former to clarify the content and the latter to give an idea of traffic level . Thread count is a moving target so don't expect regular updates ! Date Compiled: 26th February 2017 Single Lens Clubs

It seems we need a thread dedicated to the new Pentax-D FA 21 f/2.4 Limited lens. The lens has made a very strong first impression here on PF. Show us what it can do.
I have only been out with it a few times so far, but let me start the ball rolling with some assorted images. |

Decided to skip the extension tube trial and opted for some macro shots with the DA 35/2.4 in reversed position. To give me some aperture control, I used a Fotodiox adapter originally intended for mounting Pentax lenses on Nikon bodies. Removing the supplied optics meant for infinity focus in its primary role, I end up with a fairly thin ring that lets me change the aperture on my reversed lens despite its lack of aperture ring. It doesn't eat up a lot of working room; I can still get light onto my subjects from the onboard flash with my trusty Pringles tin extender/diffuser. Horizontal field of view is about 17mm, so this is 1.43X magnification.
Here's that Fotodiox adapter:
Results? I'm quite pleased. Can't say I've ever had such a good look at the neck muscles of the insects I shoot!
And at 100%:
100%:
100% again:
I'll have to try it on my K-S2, as its focus peaking is a bit more user friendly than that of the PK: it doesn't wink off when you apply any pressure to the shutter release button, but stays on through the exposure process.
Cross posted with "Macro by any means necessary" and "Show me your insects" threads.

The following are copy from several different user's post.
Hopefully this can help more newcomers (or not) to know more about the great Green Button.
Thanks to Peter Zack, RuiC, sezme.
In manual mode (A,FA, DA etc series lens) you can push the button and it sets the exposure for the program mode and the program line. Program line is the setting you have selected in the camera menus, like MTF (where the camera sets the lens at the best aperture for that lens, which is programmed into the lens by the manufacturer). Then you can fine tune the exposure to your liking from this setting. Very old school but an absolute requirement for a serious shooter in tough lighting and many other situations. (Peter Zack) Step Down Metering
With an M or M42 lens, you can use the button to stop the lens down and take a meter reading. For those that own these lenses, it's an approximate reading and you have to understand (with practice) the way your particular lens will meter on the attached body. In most cases, these lenses meter well wide open but tend to over expose in middle apertures. So you use the green setting recommendations as a starting place to adjust to the correct exposure. (Peter Zack) Return to HyperProgram(P) after changes
In HyperProgram (P) mode you can turn the front e-dial to adjust exposure time other than P suggests and it changes to Tv mode. If you turn the rear e-dial it becomes Av mode. Then press Green-button it returns to P mode again. (RuiC) image from Digiichi - Next generation hyperprogram. From Full Manual mode to P, Av or Tv
The green button in M mode get you to P, Av or Tv dependant on what mode is chosen in the green button menu set up. (excellent if you want to use it like an on-demand spot-meter)
The green button doesn't change from M (manual) mode to any other mode - it leaves you in M mode. It just momentarily gives you the effect of being in one of those other modes (which one depends on how you've set it up in your custom options) - setting the same aperture and/or shutter speed that you'd get it you were in one of those other modes, but then leaving that set. As opposed to constantly readjusting as the light changes.
(thanks lol101, Marc Sabatella, adwb) Act as Reset button: Reset Exposure Compensation, Flash Compensation
If you have set exposure compensation, hold the exposure compensation button plus the green button will reset the meter to zero E.C.
* You can also reset the Flash Compensation with green button. (thanks rockmaster1964) Fast access to set Auto ISO
if you press the ISO button (OK button on K10/20) plus the green button, it sets ISO to auto. A very useful button!
Also in Av/Tv if ISO is made accessible via one of the control dial, green button switches to auto-ISO. (thanks lol101) Zoom in in Playback mode
In playback, after you zoom, Green button zooms IN and EV+- zooms OUT

This is true and of course a lot of history's greatest photographers walked around with a single body/lens and often with very substandard IQ (by our standards). There is an exhibition of Sergio Larrain's work coming up and I don't think he worried much about kit:
I love the idea of a month with one prime lens. I see it suggested a lot as an effective creative push. I guess it's as much psychological as anything, thinking you're missing out if you don't have a piece of kit.

don't think about what you didn't take, think about what you did take. If you didn't take the filter, don't go oh wish I had the filter. Think what can I do without the filter. It does require creative thinking, but most of the times, the results are also more creative.

Huh? This looks like some weird right wing newsletter my aunt would share on facebook. Why so many fonts and such strange formatting?
I'm am really looking forward to the function dial on top. I need/want as much manual control as possible so I don't have to menu dive all the damn time. This does it elegantly by replacing a camera covered in tiny individual buttons, with a much more flexible 2 wheel system. Why is that bad?

I don't think any of the systems will fail to deliver results good enough for commercial work. But all work with one lens??
In order to have commercial success as a photographer communication skills seem to be at last as important as decent gear... maybe that's an area to work on??:):) Sorry, couldn't resist

Well this lens arrived today and i got out to shoot with it as much as i could, with my usual inspection i did find it has a piece of what looks like dust inside, I know this doesn't affect image quality but it would be nice if it wasn't there.
I've tried to write up all the important information i could think of that people might want to know about this lens. Ask any questions you have and I'll do my best to answer them. - Trap focus doesn't work as its mount surface doesn't short out the pins, you can work around this with foil
- As its not an A-series lens the on board flash will fire only at full power and doesn't give you access to the master setting to control an off camera flash
- Flash metering is almost trial and error until you get it right, however getting the flash's light on the subject is another problem altogether
- You likely could use the sunny 16 or overcast 11 rules however at close focusing you'll want to adjust by 1 stop for half life size and 2 stops for life size macro
- Yes there is distortion, and mustache distortion on FF
- CA though not ideal can be completely or mostly completely removed in raw editing
- It will flare but the flare spots are generally very small and though visible they're insignificant to the image
- It can resolve quite well up to F16 and F22 isn't bad either, F32 is the furthest you can go and use that in emergencies
- The corners are soft at F4 on APS-C on a brick wall test, the MTF doesn't show this and my guess is its more a fault of field curvature then aberration
- Its Vignetting on APS-C isn't bothersome, I'm not sure I've really noticed it
- Aperture has no click stops (14 blade)
- They list 1:1, 0.8:1, 0.4:1 and 0.1:1 on the magnification scale, any other magnification is just a guess
- The hood can be fiddly at times to put on
- Its a mere 6.5cm (2.6") deep at its shortest and 8.4cm (3.3") wide at the front
- Its at its shortest length when focused to 20cm, it gets a little longer towards infinity and extends about 11mm at 1:1
- The mount is a dumb mount, no electronics, no aperture lever
- Its made of solid metal, i suspect brass and at 410g it feels heavy and well built for its size
- Both the focus and aperture rings are very smooth
- The focus ring is only a 90 degree rotation from 1:1 to infinity, this leaves something to be desired
- The shipping box is much larger than the lens however the lens is well packed
- The 77mm filter thread does allow for the use of a CPL however if its not a thin CPL it may cause vignetting on FF when shifted
- The only plastic on it are the caps and hood
- The hood will get in the way of most close-ups
- Focus peaking can help with macros when you're stopped down a lot however its not perfect and i found on the toughest subjects and tightest apertures that bursting and moving might yield a shot or 2 in focus where you want it
- Aside from some extreme cases you'll likely be using the lens in the ballpark of half life size and lessor magnifications
- Lighting for macro is very tough and you might find yourself preferring to shoot into the sun or using it on a bright overcast day
- The aperture ring though free floating isn't preset so you can't focus wide open then rotate it to your desired stop and take the shot, unless you guess where that stop is you could under or overshoot it
- It appears to have reverse focus breathing in that the closer you focus the narrower your FOV becomes unlike other lenses where the closer you focus the wider the FOV becomes
- Don't use hood when shifting it will cause vignetting
- Shift metering requires LV or manual mode otherwise you'll get as much as a 2 stop darker exposure when shifted up and possibly as much as 4.7 stops brighter exposure when shifted down
- 1/3rd stop difference between shifted and not shifted photos, this may be different on full frame
- Hood is semi-glossy black in finish so when shooting towards the sun and shifting it will cause bright glare to enter the frame (the sun doesn't need to be in the frame)
- Shift is best done when stopped down as the image circle gets larger as you stop down
- Shift is designed to be limited to -6mm, 0 and +6mm however if you're careful you can hit spot in between, its just tedious
- Focus trap/confirmation doesn't work when shifted
- It can be shifted on FF when stopped down and without the hood. At full shift this will cause 2 dark corners but not completely black
- The shift mechanism is finicky, you have to press the lever upward at the side up to unlock it then you can manually move the lens up or down while initially holding the lever in the unlocked position, remember 6mm is a short distance, the lever will lock at -6, +6 and neutral
- I found that when shifted to +6mm the lock isn't strong and it can be pushed out of that position to both neutral and -6mm, however pushing it back up requires unlocking.
- It doesn't rotate so you can only shift up and down, however the mount is only held on by 4 screws so if you absolutely needed to shift to the side you could take the mount off and rotate it 90 degrees (untested)
- Unless you get really good at it you'll have to take you eye from the OVF or screen in order to fiddle with the shifting of the lens and locking device
Here are some of my first photos with the lens (Apertures from F8-F22, F16 and F22 for the macros)

If you like mirrorless then its time to go as it is doubtful Pentax will have a camera in that category for a long time.
If you like "prevalent" then sure go with Nikon. But what good is "prevalent"? If there is a particular lens that you need and Pentax does not have it, like maybe a 600mm f/4, then sure go with whatever brand you need to. But just because something is "prevalent" is meaningless. What are you missing with the Pentax line that you would use?
Arguing about minutia of camera performance is just plain a waste of time. There are no bad cameras out there today, you can get amazing photos with any brand. So find something that fits your hand well, has the lenses you need and fits your budget.
Pentax: well made, solid cameras, weather sealing, easy menu system, nice control layout, stabilization in body, limited primes
Nikon: well made, lots of choices in both lens and bodies, very prevalent so you fit in with the crowd
Sony: mirrorless, lots of full frame choices in bodies, can use most lenses out there with adapters at the cost of some automation
I've considered moving to a different brand several times. I actually had a Nikon D610 in my cart at Costco once. Each time I got the urge to change I went to a store and physically handled the other brands, spent some time fooling around with them, playing with the menu and controls. And each time, despite the reasons I had for considering switching I stayed with Pentax. My primary reason was simply that the Pentax camera felt better and more natural in MY hands. If that is not true for YOUR hands go with what feels good. There will be no significant difference in image quality anyway so I prefer to go with what makes me happy to be shooting with.

Thanks for all the info guys!
LBA?
Yeah, I've definitely noticed I need the tripod when at 200. My current one sucks, and I can't keep my monopod steady enough to get crisp pictures. Also have heard if the pictures aren't good it's definitely not the camera; maybe it's the lens though? It's certainly not me! Haha.
Appreciate the welcome! I'm thinking about the Sigma 18-300...

zoolander what you put here are hypothesis you craft in your own brain. It could be right, could be wrong. In the end it is of no importance anyway.
For something to be pattented come the constraint to actually publish the pattent and the ability for anybody to reuse the idea for themselve. That core to the idea of pattent as a way to not halt but promote innovation and sharing of ideas. But of course the pattent owner is bound to have the right to ask for some compensation in exchange.
As for factories, don't think that a factory can only produce a few things, always the same. The batch for lenses are very small anyway and once a batch has been produced you continue to pay the workers etc. What make sense is to have your factory doing as many things it can provided you can sell them.
Also don't think that everybody is going to do the same. Digitalis explained that many outsourced the lenses themselves but you can see a sigma factory video where they indeed buy the raw glass from a manufacturer but create the lens out of it themselves in factory.
So basically without an actual source to check what is really happening, we have no clue and a guess is just that a guess and is not more likely than any other option.

Hey Pentatians! AKA, my favorite group on the internet!
I will start this thread with the intent to share my workflow and talk about how I incorporate Pentax into my Adventure Photography workflow! I created this thread (LINK) a while ago and it gained some traction, so I thought I would start another regarding my other favorable genre, Adventure Photography! This thread will be light and fun but I encourage feedback or questions! Link to my website Link to my Adventure Map - Pentax k5

---------- Post added 11-18-15 at 09:11 PM ---------- As a first post, I'll share three of my most favorite images I've ever captured outdoors.
This image is one of my favorites because the process of getting the photo was such a peaceful time. I woke up early in the morning in City of Rocks and just had time to meditate and think while taking photos. Beautiful time! The Pentax k5 + 60-250mm @ 135mm on a tripod. Iso100, 1/2, f/8.
This shot is special because I had never been 4x4ing before. It was a beautiful sunrise and the fog was just glistening through the trees. It was one of my favorite adventure too! Pentax k5 +31 Ltd
This photo is special too because it was my first time kayaking in the winter (technically Fall). But this adventure opened my eyes to the beauty that winter (again, technically Fall) has near the water that you can't see from land. Pentax K5 + 60-250. i'll be honest... Lots of editing in Photoshop to get what I saw and the colors accurate. |

Why is Instagram so popular? And why are there so many other apps and filters mimicking it, trying to cash in on the same silly styles?
And why the hell is lomography so popular!
The shallow answer is ultimately simple - a segment of the market enjoys certain styles, and it makes sense for a photo company to try to cater to it. The deeper answer, why do people like miscoloured, softened, overexposed jpegs.. well, I guess nobody can say for certain. It has to do with hiding imperfections, giving room for fantasy, and adding a (fake) feeling of nostalgia, authenticity.

A significant part of the market is complaining in this thread...
Which is not the same product. It tried to be too much of a merge between PS and LR, relying on iPhotos for indexing, etc. And was too tightly linked to Mac.
I photoshop very well with Gimp.
For me there are two things : indexing and publishing. I haven't found any equivalent with such powerful indexing tools. Publishing is more of a market reality, since a lot of people use it, a lot of tools exist.
The editing tools are very good but nothing unique, not by any stretch.
I love a lot of things about it. I have no gripes with the price of the stand alone version. What I (and others complain about) is the business strategy behind the CC adventure. The interview in the original post clearly states that CC was a way to make more money out of the same old product, NOT AT ALL a way to improve value. And THAT'S what I dislike.

I bought this SMC Pentax-M 100mm f:2.8 lens this past spring ( CL for $30.00) and strangely, I had never given it a whirl. So, this afternoon, I hooked it up to my "new-to-me" K-r, wandered down the street and took this shot just for S&G's. I was blown away at it's sharpness! The bokeh is pretty good, too!
I need to spend more time USING lenses and less time BUYING them! :o
