New K-1 disappointment

I know I might sound like a Pentax hater when talking about the shutter shock, but this problem could not even be more real. During my last fall trip to France and Germany, I lost too many shots due to the vibrations from 1/60 - 1/200. When I dug the past datas from my 5 other trips since May 2016, I found most of the shots taken with the 28-105 at those shutter speeds are blurred. What's interesting, the more recent the shots, the more noticeable the blurring.

So last month, together with the Pentax distributor I conducted controlled test using my K1, 28-105 and 24-70, with/wihout SR, all shots were done with LV and OV. Focal length tested were only 24 and 28mm. The result was, the shutter shock is real. All the LV shots were tack sharp, the OV shots were blurred. The pentax distributor agrees that this is a big issue, but as usual, they are waiting for what Pentax has to say.

I've been waiting since January (first time I reported this issue), and I don't enjoy taking shots at arm's length with my K1 so I sold it. I'm keeping the lenses though. Got some true keepers.

Now the A7Riii arrived (after battling between it and D850) and it will share some lenses with my 5DSr.

I think not all K1 users are unlucky, many seem perform well without any noticeable issue :)

Mirror Slap / Shutter Shock on K-1

Pentax distributor lent me a grip and a 24-70/2.8 today. I have tested them and my 28-105 repeatedly, using VF, LV, back to VF, LV and so on. I observed the RAWs and found out:

K-1. Grip, DFA 28-105, 1/125s, 28mm

The grip doesn't help. The sharpness difference is clearly noticeable among the LV shots and VF shots.

K-1 (no grip), DFA 24-70/2.8, 1/125s, 24mm

The shutter shock does affect this setup - to a lesser degree - but still I didn't miss how sharp the LV shots are. Micro contrast and edge sharpness are better with the LV shots.

I'll do some more test tomorrow, though I don't expect anything different but just to make sure before I report this to Pentax distributor. Maybe my unit is among the worst affected by the shutter shock, so if there is no response again from Pentax, I see no options other than selling the body...

Just my 0.02

Still a mystery why the problem is centered on 28-105. Pity, because this is a very good lens esp for travel. Lately I'm seeing more blur at 1/200 while 6 months ago that was a safe shutter speed. One thing for sure, Pentax chose not to respond as I've reported this so many times through the distributor. They solved other problems on my K-1 quickly, just not this vibration issue.

Now my K-1 will most likely stay in the cabinet as I'd shoot more with 5DSr. Avoiding 1/60-1/200 and shooting a heavy DSLR the same way as shooting with a smartphone is beyond me....

I'm interested to know if somehow Pentax fixed the shutter shock problem with this 'new' version - or maybe I'm just a black K-1 user with bad lucks :)

shutter vibration and shake reduction

Just want to add my experience here, I use my K-1 exclusively with DFA 28-105 - and I'm getting motion blurs (mostly) at 28mm and slower than 1/250s. I could shoot 10 times at these settings and get the same blurred photos 10 times. At first I thought it must have been a bad day for me to have blurred shots at 28mm and 1/160s - until I found it consistent.

I already gave up and almost never use the K-1 as I've reported/complained about this issue at least 3 times through Pentax distributor and ignored (no answer from Japan according to them) - yet my other complaints are resolved by them (broken mode dial, broken metering, 28-105 zoom stuck). So many problems in my case.

My other hi-res body is an EOS 5DSr, no shutter shock whatsoever, tripod or handheld. I bought the K-1 as my travel kit (hence the 28-105), but this problem occurs in the most used outdoor speed settings and I'd hate to switch to LV and ES...

Help needed figuring out D FA 28-105

I've used the 28-105 maybe around 90% of the time, and among 3000 shots I did find several 'weird' images that were shot at 28mm and have some 'doubling blurriness'. No it is not motion blur, SR was on, 28mm (only), mostly f8~9, and the blurriness occurs only off center. The problems is easier to detect if I do some sharpening by adjusting the 'Detail' slider in LR CC and use 0.5 Radius. I will have to dig the files again but I remember how confused I was because it didn't make any sense at all to have motion blurs on those shots.

Pentax K-1 tie with sony A7 II as best sub 2k camera on Dpreview.com

A tie is an insult. I used the A7ii before and seriously the image quality is probably among the worst in the class (compared to K1, 6D, D750) esp at high ISO. Ergonomically even Xpro2 is better too. So K1 should be the single winner in that round up. Of course if you think DPR must always give something to Sony.... ;)

I certainly wished Sigma make the 50 Art in Pentax mount. I have the ZE/ZF 50/1.4 and this lens is really not worth $900. The new Milvus version is usable at f/1.4, though. FWIW, my FA 50/1.4 is fine stopped down (2.8 at least) and it's only $300 new.

Which lens for Astrophotography?

DA 35/2.4 (and Sigma 35A) and DA50/1.8 should be good wide open or stopped down a bit. DA15 is ok but only f/4 unless you do tracking with EQ mount, Polarie, or Astro Tracer.

ANY focal length is usable, just for different targets. With DA 35/50 you can shoot Milky Way's core (around Sagittarius), widefield of Orion constellation with the M42 visible. In the southern hemisphere the DA50 will allow you to image the Large Magellanic Cloud galaxy. You might want to experiment with DA 55-300 too. If you want to capture the milky way wide, try the 18-135 since that's what you have. Maybe there will be some coma and CA in the corners but if the shoot is well-tracked I wouldn't mind some aberration in the corners. Tracking is the key for well exposed astro photos, then do stacking. That way you could keep the ISO rather low (800 or 1600).

Just because Zeiss lenses have infinity hard stop doesn't mean the focus plane is at infinity (can be only partially).

I've found one ZF 21/2.8 Distagon, one ZF 35/2 Distagon and three ZE 25/2 with decentering issues revealed at infinity. I bought them all for astrophotography in the first place (why the infinity stop should make it easier to focus in darkness) - BUT it turned out the stars were pinpoint only in the half of the frame and the other half is filled with star-bokeh. The newer Zeiss like FE 55/1.8 is also prone to decentering. Ask the Sony guys :hmm:

My situation with the 24-70L II was made even more difficult because this lens (good copy) exhibits a curvature at infinity past 24mm. So landscape photos with subjects far away will only be sharp in the center (30-40% of total frame) and gets mushy to the edges. This is very evident around 35mm-50mm settings and no f/8 or f/11 would help. When I brought this over to some photogs in another forum they confirmed this (and mostly just realized). I'm selling this last lens of mine and will never look back ;)

Bottom line is, every lens got its own character, and testing when buying is mandatory. I'm happy to report that my D-FA 28-105 is well centered and gives me sharp infinity focus I could never get with the L lens.

My experience with 24-70L II is that infinity and close focus could have different behavior - and I'm on the 5th sample currently. My Zeiss ZE 25/2 is the third unit (first unit was 30% of the frame being soft on the left side, this 3rd unit is 10% soft (left side too) which is "normal and expected" according to a Zeiss tech support in Germany. I remember that very same guy mocked Japanese lenses QC when giving presentations at Zeiss events). Those lenses didn't pass the infinity test which showed the flaws. The better brands for this kind of issue are Leica M and Sigma Art. With Sigma you could still get a decentered unit but the chance is much lower than Canon and Zeiss ZE/ZF in my experience.

So yeah, it kinda pisses me off the manufacturers sell high-end lenses but think they don't have any obligation to deliver good quality units.

DFA 24-70 FF and FB other problems

Just my experience, I had two K1s to test before buying, I tried FA 50 and FA 43 because I knew older AF lenses tend to have some focus errors. Anyway, one of the K1 focuses well (no need for fine focus adjustment for both lenses) with only few misfocuses - but the other K1 needed +3 focus adjustment for FA50, and never focused well with FA43 no matter how I adjusted the fine focus adjustment. I kept the good one. I haven't tried 24-70 yet. My DFA 28-105 though, are very accurate on both K1s.

When using other than Takumar M42, make sure the lens has no electronic contacts. If it does, it won't screw lightly and you have to force the contact colliding with the K1 contacts on the mount. Not worth the risk.

Well, that is my method for testing the lens in a short time, at least I know which one to take (more or less) - but it's certainly helpful to buy in a store that is willing to be 'flexible'. I have good relationships with the distributors here, so I'm getting the first K1 - and it will be launched later this month. They also left some 'goodies' for me to try.

Anyway, I just tested the 28-105 again today, so far so good. It's a very good lens, at 28mm WO the corners are already reasonably sharp, and at f/8 (throughout the range) I have no complaints

It's meant to be a practical way to test the lens. There is a grid in K1's viewfinder that would really help. I usually redo the test at home with a tripod like you described. That said, using the ruler with the VF grid is not difficult at all - because when you find a decentered lens you'll be surprised at how far the focus plane shifts. In case of the 28-105, the left frame was in focus in front of the ruler, and the right frame was way behind the ruler. Very noticeable. When I did the long distance test, the left and right frame showed different sharpness too. Pentax people came to my office with 2 K1s and 2 28-105s, and some other lenses so I had to decide which one to take home :)

I've been doing it for years after getting less than ideal samples (many of them) from Canon and Zeiss ZE/ZF. I'm doing mostly landscape, architecture and some astrophotography that's why it's important for me.

Hi Bruce,

I always do at two distances, first at infinity wide open, and minimum distance. To make it easier at close distance I take photo of long 24" ruler. It will be easy to detect if the focus plane shifts front and back from left to right.

These tests are also useful to see if the lens is optimized at short or long distance. For example, canon 24-70 L ii tends to be flatter at short distance but has curvature at infinity that doesn't get better even at f8.

In case of DFA 28-105, the two samples behaved differently on the ruler test :)
