Absolutely frustrating, if i would have only one camera and it would be the *istD iīd propably ditched the thing long ago!
But as the *istD is just one option, for me itīs weaknesses become itīs strengths! :D

Just few tricks, go as wide as you can, shoot RAW and use a tripod.
My usual gear for auroras is K-70 with Samyang 14mm. I stay max ISO3200, when lights are bright itīs easy and files are good for postprosessing.
Shutterspeeds (at ISO3200 as a rule of thumb) are normally around 4sec in good conditions, towards 10sec when they are faint and up to 20sec when the eyes donīt see anything :cool:
Just remember that longer the shutter, the more they appear as a colorful "blanket" with less drama and character. So usually shorter shutter is preferable.
As others have mentioned, try to have something nice on the foreground and focus manually to infinity.
If you have a location where you can go shooting at night for stars or milky way or at least something, that would be good for getting used to operate the camera in dark and cold. And donīt forget that the K-70 has an option to turn the screen red in order to retain your nightvision!
Now what else... Oh yes, the most important thing: Enjoy your trip, remember to focus on your wife more than to your camera since good memories are more important than full SD cards! :)
