October 1984 - Lenses & Accessories Catalog

I inherited my Mom's Super Program this past weekend and among everything was a pristine copy of the Oct. 1984 Pentax Lenses & Accessories catalog.

I have scanned it full-color @ 400DPI to a PDF and uploaded it here. The PDF is 21MB.

There are a couple bugs (dang distractions...):
Page 27 is upside down
Page 55 is missing
Page 57 is there twice

I'll scan it again and hopefully get it right next time but for now enjoy!
Man, there was a ton of awesome "current" glass back then.

Really bad wildfires out west of the city are burning out of control and the skies are filled with smoke and ash. A low pressure cell moved in this evening and combined with the debris to create this sky.

The expense of photography only begins with the camera gear. Time is the greatest expense, and it never stops sending bills.

Interesting. I love the frame, but I do not get an xmas vibe from it.

First, and lasting, impression for me is rosary beads hanging from a rear view mirror out a rain spattered windscreen - and those aren't holiday lights in the bokeh.

Why the AVERSION to video?

I would echo the sentiment expressed by drypenn, and expand just a weary bit.

I enjoy shooting video. And, cinematography, or videography if you prefer, is not still frame photography. It requires a different form factor & ergonomic set to do it properly. This is why you see elaborate shoulder mounts and other accoutrements to facilitate stable well composed video with dSLRs. And frankly, for the price of the camera, lenses and all the necessary gear I would rather buy a cinematic camera that is already a complete package designed from the ground up to capture video.

Plus, even today, dSLR sensors stuggle (sometimes brilliantly) to satisfy the brutal photonic onslaught of capturing quality video. Somebody, somewhere, sometime in the last five years convinced someone of influence that sensors and image processors had to be able to do everything. That person should be shot.

Have you ever driven screws with a hammer? Sure, it "works", but in order to get that screw set tightly you still have to twist it with a screwdriver and even then it won't be as secure as if you had properly drilled and countersunk a pilot hole before sinking it to the proper torque with a screw driver.

For many of us, it's a matter of being artisanal versus "good enough". Pick one thing, and do that thing the very best you can.

Dropped 3 rolls of 120 Porta 160 at the lab this afternoon and picked up a couple gallons of distilled water. I got fresh HC-110 and Kodafix from Freestyle on Thursday so in a little while I'll be processing a dozen sheets of HP5 4x5 that have been patiently waiting for me.

As far as I'm concerned Fuji already beat Pentax to market with what Pentax should have brought 2 years ago, minus decent video and k-mount.

Kelby does nothing without a monetary motivation. He is not primarily a photographer, nor a particularly good one unless paired with and/or under the guidance of a legitimate pro. He is a product evangelist and promoter of the product called "Scott Kelby". I guarantee you, he is generating revenue to his own bottom-line by switching to Canon.

FWIW in my opinion the forum was a lot more lively, with much richer conversations when it wasn't so preoccupied with categorizing everything. To my mind there are about 50 too many sub-forums and way too much moderation. For a forum celebrating a camera manufacturer whose motto is/was "Be Different" this place has really become a "my way or the highway" sort of joint.

Priest Stops A Wedding To Yell At Photographer

The photographer and videographer were both way out of position. Standing directly behind the priest, shooting the back of his head? Seriously? Hey, why not ask the priest to wear a Go Pro strapped to his forehead, right? And then to stand there arguing?! Wow.

Priest Stops A Wedding To Yell At Photographer

I'm sorry, but you cannot rationally push this off onto the officiant - priest or otherwise. Part of the photographer's job is to know the rules before the ceremony. The officiant's job is to conduct the ceremony, not manage the photographers. Change the scene; make this a football game and now you're a paid photographer covering the game. Go ahead and strut right out to the huddle to get some action shots. Who's fault will it be when the referee and/or umpire ejects you from the stadium for trespassing on the field of play?

What you don't understand is that the officiant (the priest here) of the wedding IS IN CHARGE. What s/he says goes, period. For the duration of that religious ceremony everything does revolve around his religion and his world. If the bride and groom didn't want a religious wedding then they hired the wrong officiant. And if the photographers can't respect the rules, no matter how vague, they need to look for other work.

It doesn't matter if the photographers misunderstood his instructions before the wedding, or if he changed his mind after the ceremony started. Whatever he says, when he says it, is the rule. Obey, or leave. And when he says "don't come into the aisle" before the ceremony, and then clarifies that later by telling them to retreat from their position at the rear of the seats, it should be absolutely crystal clear that standing directly behind him at the chancel is off limits.

If you read Hasan's comments it becomes very obvious he showed up without a plan and lacked the skill to craft one. Huge wedding party, at a lake, all attendees standing during the ceremony. Did he even speak with the couple about the layout of the ceremony before taking the gig?

645N beats the 645D !

Actually, the bottom line is:
  • A Digital 135 format SLRs will always beat a Film 135 format SLR at creating digital images.

  • A Film 135 format SLR will always beat a Digital 135 format SLR at creating a photographic negative and/or transparency.

  • If he were alive today, Ansel Adams, armed with an Ansco ShurShot, a roll of TMax and his darkroom, would likely produce better photographs than any member of this forum armed with a Phase One IQ180 and CS5.

Pixels do not make photographs.

Bill Gekas has been using the 645D for 6mos or so. His public gallery is comprised mainly of scenes he does with his daughter - and they are superb.

Why is Pentax messed up?

Based on this, I would say the salesman was very good at their job.

You make comments about camera brand A (Pentax) while comparing to camera brand B (Nikon). Sales person doesn't waste their time trying to move you toward A and instead encourages your apparent leaning toward B.
Sales people don't care what brand you buy, they only care that you DO buy.
If you walk up to me and say "Seems like Pentax has issues." I will respond "I think you're right. Look at this Nikon D7000. It uses the same sensor as that K-5, and you and I both know Nikon is here to stay." And we're off to the races, as they say. ;)

Every time I see someone downgrade/degrade/same-diff a photo because "it's altered" I find myself wishing I had one of Ansel Adams' plates at hand to slap across their brow.

Gorgeous scenes. It didn't even occur to me that the derrick was OOF; I assumed it was atmospheric distortion. And that skyline silhouette has just given me some real inspiration.

Adding on Paypal fees

I'm not sure what adjective I would assign this practice, but I have never understood the rationale for putting an item in the marketplace with a non-ecommerce price on an internet classified listing.
  1. It's an e-commerce sale! You're 99.9% safe assuming the transaction will be some form of Electronic funds transfer. Every EFT service charges a transaction fee.

  2. Asking the buyer to use the Paypal Gift option is:
    a) Fraudulent use, and could result in yours and the buyer's accounts frozen.
    b) No Seller/Buyer protection. It's a "gift", you have no recourse for fraud.

  3. Paypal actually adds valuable service along with the transfer in the form of a secure environment, fraud protection for both buyer and seller, invoicing capabilities, shipping tools, and a wide variety of funding options.

  4. If you find a local buyer then great; you can offer them a discount for cash on delivery.

  5. If you want to take a check by mail you're not being very smart, but again you can offer a discount to sweeten the deal.

But here's the most important point, a tiny bit of marketing advise:
Never, never, never ask a buyer to figure out how much more they need to ADD to your listing price.

Do yourself and your buyers a favor. Factor in your expected transaction fees.

When I sell items I go one step further and figure out my average CONUS shipping cost, with insurance, for the item and factor that in as well. I don't like losing buyers from making them do arithmetic.
