I don't have Zeiss, but I do have FA31. You presented very convenient case that in some situations Zeiss has an edge over FA31. Thanks for the great write up and work done.

My tip is from a close-by domain. I often find it very pleasant to listen to music while editing my photographs. Very often it brings emotions, that I think, I wouldn't normally feel or try to convey otherwise. And as well, I am often thinking that just like good cognac is best served with a slice of lemon, a good photograph can be doubly enjoyed if a good musical tune comes along with it.

The FA 100/3.5 (and a matching two element adapter, which is in fact a universal close up filter of 49 mm diameter) is great optic. Build is plastic but optics are great. There're third party equivalents (Cosina, etc) that are exactly the same sans the coatings. Wonderful optic for like USD 150 or so.

My all time favorite lens is Pentax SMCP A 50/1.2. It has the rendering that is somewhat dissimilar to modern all very contrasty, punchy uninteresting modern lenses. The lens I use the most these days is Voigtlander Nokton 40/1.4 on my Ricoh GXR M-mount module. It is small, light, fast and produced wonderful images with excellent tonal and OOF separation.

Urkeldaedalus, I should say that having returned from 2 weeks vacation in US of A I am totally in love with Ricoh GXR 50mm module. For all my purposes the sensor and the lens are more than enough. I will post some images later on as I am still very much in the middle of processing the whole bunch. I've shot more than 1500 still frames and 50+ video clips and lost may be like dozen images. The operation of the camera and the ergonomics are top notch. The color fidelity and ability to pull detail and valid color from overexposed areas is outstanding. The JPG engine is remarkable to the point that I have no hesitation whatsoever in shooting JPG with various picture modes (miniature and soft come to mind right away). ISO 1600 is very much usable without much addition to the processing. All in all this is probably as good a camera for me as it can possibly get. I don't use my Pentax gear any longer and don't have any regrets whatsoever.

Reaction to K-30 review

Correct me if I am wrong, but my understanding from the review of K-30 was that it offers virtually no improvement in AF unless the mirror is up and CDAF is used. Adding to that the mention of the weaker battery life than K-5 means that in terms of conventional SLR photography, K-30 is pretty much the same as K-5. Which is an excellent thing in itself given the price difference at launch time and target position in the product line, yet I would expect that K-5 successor would offer some significant improvement in PDAF sub-system. Other than that, the rest seems like yet another feature list comparison. K-30 has stronger image processor, hence better video, and additional improvements over K-5 are there - AF in video for example. Yet the review indicates that it is slow and imprecise... K-5 in turn has 14 bit RAW vs 12 bit of K-30. In principle this is more information captured, while of course in real life it depends on the specifics of the scene and the skills of photographer at capture time and during post-processing whether or not these 2 bits of information would prove visibly useful...

In my personal view and for my personal style of photography K-30 offers nothing that could even remotely make me think not to keep my K-5s passing K-30 all together. Obviously your mileage may and should be different than mine.

FA 50mm f1.4 or 43mm f1.9? Which do you prefer and why?

I beg to differ here.

1. How sharp is sharp? Sometimes A 50/1.2 is sharp enough wide open. And the wider the aperture the more narrow is DOF - the more critical is AF precision. If all these elements are in place, FA 50/1.4 is very sharp. Again, I am talking about my own preferences. I don't like biting sharpness. I do like smooth tonal gradations and smooth transition from IF (in-focus) to OOF. Here FA 50/1.4 is good enough for prints as large as A3.

2. FA 50/1.4 has the same SMC coatings as FA 43. There may be some difference in coatings specifics, but I've found no flare issues with either lens.

3. As for corner sharpness - again, if we're measuring against standard targets - you may have a point. But if we're talking real-life photography, corner sharpness suddenly becomes moot.

Busy rendering is rubbish in my book. If I have a shot with really busy OOF - it goes to trash bin. Again, IMO which obviously may differ from that of yours, pop has to do with the light and not with the lens. The lens may accentuate the pop, but without proper light, FA 43 won't be of any help.

I'd like to ask you what exactly do you mean by "The 43 has much better colour"?

I certainly agree. It is just that with 43, 55 seems like too close a focal length. 70/77 is more like it. To me.

I tend to disagree. I do agree that the comparison is somewhat silly. However, both lenses can be used as a standard low light short tele/portrait fast optic. I am too lazy, but I think it is entirely possible (and not too difficult) to come up with the dozen shots, where 6 will be shot with FA 50 and another 6 with FA 43 where to tell which is which is going to be nearly impossible.

It was certainly helpful to me, as it got me thinking about certain things. I think that FA 43 and FA 50 are quite close unless like I said earlier in this thread, one is really very well experienced shooter intimately familiar with one's gear. So up to a certain level it is an uneven toss where unevenness comes from the price difference between the two.

DA 40mm & FA 50mm 1.4 or FA 43mm 1.9?

Here is my view/history. I started with FA 50/1.7. Then went to M 50/1.4. Then went to FA 43 and sold all my 50 mm lenses. Then bought A 50/1.2 and did not shoot with FA 43 for a long while. Then bought FA 50/1.4 for my daughter No, honestly, I am not shooting with it, she is. And so here is my answer:

FA 43 + FA 50/1.4 would probably be the best if most expensive choice. If you manage to get a good sample of FA 50/1.4 (there are some rather sharp wide open samples out there) or as rumor has it (I cannot prove or disprove it for lack of experience) F 50/1.4 is sharper than FA 50/1.4 wide open, then you get the speed and AF. With FA 43 you get the somewhat smaller and theoretically or emotionally better lens. In practical use, FA 50/1.4 should probably be enough for everything, unless you want something tiny, and then DA 40/2.8 would come to mind.

I realize I am not making it any clear with my last paragraph. So, I will summarize that my all time favorite 50 mil lens is A 50/1.2.

Gosh, such opinions are just pure poison for the uninformed reader. You sir, are totally, completely, utterly wrong, with all due respect.

I have all three FA limited lenses and grand total of more than 10,000 frames shot with them. Add to that some 2,500 shots with DA 21 Limited and you will see that I am no stranger to Pentax limited land. The more I shoot the more I realize that although the lens is indeed very important, the light and the composition far outweigh whatever optics have to offer. I also maintain that all other manufacturers have top rate glass just as good as anything Pentax has to offer. There are certain aspects where certain lenses are better than others, but this is usually measured in tests and the differences are far less pronounced than internet hype has it.

It is therefore important that so broad and swiping statements about lenses should be made with great deliberation and care.
