I don't know what has possessed me, but I got up at 6:30 AM on purpose today, trying to catch the sunrise. Sadly, none was to be found :hmm:
However, there were a few other nice opportunities, and I got a morning workout at the same time :)
Here's a Beetle in the morning gloom. Heavily edited to make its headlights pop and enhance the overall mood; I've also uploaded a less edited version since I usually try to go for natural colours, or black and white.

Love it. Am I the only one thinking that it would make the most perfectly ironic grave?
Here's a 36 shot stitch of a little island in the river Walkham just before it joins the Tavy at Double Waters -- it's four rows of nine frames adding up to a 180 degree view. Downstream from this the Tavy joins the Tamar, and then about twenty miles further along at Devonport Dockyard you'll find submarines and aircraft carriers. Mostly canoes up at this end though.
There's something unexpectedly liberating about ending up with an 18-55mm as your only lens. Without anything wider you're forced to resort to stitching, and that has the effect of making you stop thinking in terms of focal lengths. You just find a vantage point where you like the view, then collect as many frames as you think you'll need for the stitch-up. I highly recommend it.:) |

I bet you could get away with posting that one in the film thread pretending it's a scan of a vintage E6 slide and nobody would doubt it. Beautifully done.:)
We had a pause in the storms yesterday and I managed to get out to Burrator Dam for a walk. This is a 27 shot stitch, with a couple of little people hidden away in there for scale. |

Regress it to K-0
Market it as "Pure photographer's tool"
No IBIS
Fixed LCD
No GPS
As small a FF DSLR as possible (MZ5n sized if possible )
Dedicated focusing screen (or equivalently good focusing aid like superimposed LV on OVF, etc)
Looks like a Spotmatic, ME Super for even MZ5n.
24mp
Pentax wants be be the company holding up the "Purer than thou" / "Make DSLR Great Again" flag and "this is the way. ;)

I don't know how many people would purchase this, but I'd like to see a divergence of the full frame line, and Ricoh makes something like the Nikon Df as a "lower end" FF body for people who want more traditional controls and a smaller camera. I'd be fine with a few less megapixels of sensor resolution, or keep it at 36, my hope is improved high-ISO image quality.
I don't think this will ever happen.

Ya know, Dave, when I made up that signature design, we didn't know if we'd ever see you back here, and there are some other signature images paying tribute to other members, so I didn't invent the idea. And just looking for a pony standing in such a way as to look like an "m" which I could adapt to make the design, reminded me even more of how astounding the catalog of Dartmoor pony pictures you've posted here is--further exemplified by the one you just posted. And of course you've posted many other great pictures, too.
Whether we now hear from you regularly again, or only from time to time, I will continue to consider you a fellow PF member worthy of high regard and honors, and my invitation to others still stands. If that makes you blush, maybe that is good for your circulation. In these unhealthful times, we all need all the help we can get in that area, no? :)

Thanks Tim, I'm grateful. It probably reflects badly on me to say so, but I've had to admit to myself that clearly I had something I'd needed to get off my chest here on the forum. With that now done, I'll be turning up in the K10D Club now and then to share some snaps, and I'll also log on in the background occasionally and quietly spray a load of likes around here and there. But I'm determined to stay away from anything more contentious, and hopefully I'll be able to stick to that resolution.:)

Thanks for being so understanding folks. I was a bit nervous about explaining that my absence from here was caused by mental health issues, but perhaps if people talked about such things more openly then there wouldn't be any stigma involved.
As I've said, I'll be avoiding actively participating in social media in general as much as possible. So if anyone tries to get in touch through any social media channels and I don't reply then I'd like to apologise for that in advance. Right now it's what I have to do to keep myself sane and well.
I'm sure I'll be back in a month or two with some more photos as they come along. For now, I'm going to have a look back through the K10D Club and do some liking.:)

Hi, Dave. We've missed you. Nice to see you back (even if it's only temporary, although I certainly hope it's not!) and to hear that you're improving. You certainly haven't forgotten how to coax some superb shots out of that GX-10. All my best!

Stunning photos Dave. It's amazing what the kit lens can do in skilled hands. I wish you all the best in dealing with your issues, and hope you'll continue to drop in occasionally.

I'm glad you came here to let us know how you are doing... and I'm sorry you have been going through a rough time.
I actually came here because I went to your flickr page to see if there were any updates, and I saw that it was gone. I was going to ask if anyone had heard from you and knew what was going on...
I know this is a photography related site, but I'd like to say that if you ever need a friend to talk to... don't hesitate to contact me. I've had my share of rough times and I won't say I know what you're going through, but I can say I wasn't even supposed to be around anymore, yet here I am... actually loving life, which is definitely not the way it was in my earlier years. God's been good to me despite my shortcomings.
I wish you all the best and thanks for sharing what's going on with us.

Hi folks. Last week I logged on to Flickr for the first time in months and discovered that a couple of you had kindly tried to contact me, so I thought I'd stop by here to say sorry for not replying.
Over the last six months or so of last year I was in the grip of a fairly catastrophic episode of the mental health condition that comes along and clobbers me now and then, so I'm afraid I really wasn't in any condition to be chatting to anyone online. It's no big deal in comparison with the horrors that so many people have suffered from Covid, but it was enough to cause quite a lot of self-inflicted damage in my own life. And it meant that I rudely ignored a couple of you from here, and I want to apologise for that.
I've now realised that there's something intrinsically destabilising about social media for me personally, so I've shut down everything apart from Facebook with a handful of close family and real world friends. That includes shutting down my Flickr account. Of course you can't officially close down a PF account, and that's fine because I think I probably would have wanted to keep this one open anyway for old time's sake. I've lurked here now and then and it's been good to see that the K10D Club is still going strong with some talented new members, and I've loved what I've seen in the CCD cult thread. But I won't be coming back here as a regular contributor, because, like I say, I've come to accept that social media isn't particularly healthy for me personally.
I've actually taken a couple of photos again over the past few weeks, which is hopefully a sign that things are on the mend now. Although it seems that, somewhere during the months of chaos, I gave away all my lovely Takumars to charity -- which is just the sort of thing that tends to happen in those sort of times. I've still got the GX-10 and 18-55mm though, and what else more than that do you really need anyway?
Here's a couple of snaps from the start of this year (assuming I've remembered how to do it and they're actually visible). |
