Here is an alternative to using flash. If you've got a good bit of sunlight to work with, use Tv as you tried, but adjust the shutter speed with the wheel to a level that will give proper exposure. 1/4000 is appartently too fast, even with the lens wide open, giving you dark photos. Try kicking it down to a slower speed, perhaps 1/500 or 1/1000 - if your speed is too fast for the aperature, I think the f number should blink on the LCD panel on top of the camera. It may blink in the viewer as well.
When all else fails, read the book!
Have fun with it - Alan

Another vote for Eneloops - they solved the problem for me with a K100D. Kodaks I already had worked so-so - the Energizer rechargabless I got are junk.

I've sent a PM on the camera.

A couple of thoughts on batteries. I, too, had trouble when first using my K100D.
I think the Pentax is fussy about the power from it's batteries. A set that works fine in my Olympus C-750 would show dead after 3 shots with the Pentax. A brand new set of Energizer NiMH's, freshly charged, showed dead when inserted in the camera (these Engergizers are junk, it seems).
The Kodak NiMH's I have work pretty well if charged with a smart charger - I got a LaCrosse BC-900. Eneloops beat the Kodaks by far, however. I have not tried the Rayovac hybrids, but it sounds like they are good, also. Hybrid batteries and a smart charger are an investment, but the aggravation of dead batteries will be gone!

I had this problem when I first got the K100D, only worse. A freshly charged set of Kodaks lasted for only 5 shots. A brand new set of Energizer rechargeables showed dead before a single shot was taken. The solution was a smart charger - LaCrosse BC-900. It makes both brands work OK. I did get a set of Sanyo Eneloops, and they are the best - I've got more on order.
Cheers, Alan
