Finding a thumbscrew is torture!

To BlakeShellman: Great. I know just how you would have felt to have found the screw. As I said, I eventually found my missing thumbscrew.
(By the way, are you aware of the small kits of screws and other bits that you need to repair glasses? No lenses, of course!)

To robertchow999: Buying a lottery ticket after I found the screw didn't work for me! Mind you, neither does having a ticket on a Friday the 13th. Or when £11,000,000* is the prize on November 11th (11,11,11!). Perhaps the year 2014 spoiled that! [*EuroMillions].

(A) No, it's not cheap, but worth every penny/cent.
B) The trick is to leave the baseplate permanently attached to the camera. To release the viewfinder "hood" you loosen a small thumbscrew at the side of the baseplate which frees the tab or "tongue", releasing the viewfinder "hood". This can then go in your camera bag or wherever. Don't forget to tighten the thumbscrew so that it doesn't drop off.

No. My K-01 is about twice as heavy as the Swivi viewfinder. So you're not adding all that much. Now, add a sturdy tripod and you know you've added extra weight.

I don't know if this makes sense, but I understand that Steadicams - the thing that makes film and TV cameras steady - works on the principal of a weight at the bottom of the unit (as well as being attached to a bar connected to the cameraman's belt). So do you want to put up with extra weight or have just a light camera that it shakes all over the place? !

That is one, of course. But I don't know anything about it. You can see the Swivi viewfinder I mentioned at: cheesycam.com/new-gear-swivi-lcd-view-finder. That, too, is available from Amazon!
Or you can go to this thread on the Pentax Forum: Finding a thumbscrew is torture! (pun intended) under the K3 threads because I couldn't find the one I wanted ! :o

ADDED: If I understand what DSLR-esque technique is, that is one advantage, but I believe that the main thing about viewfinders of this type is that they let you see the LCD when taking pictures in bright sunlight with the sun behind you by screening the sun which would otherwise make the image on the LCD impossible to see.

One thing I have just thought of is that the length of the viewfinder means your face is further away from the camera than with a viewfinder as part of the camera, so you don't have to turn your head sideways to keep your nose out of the way! I'm not being too serious about that additional advantage.

It could well be the best purchase you make this year. (I'm still not a Swivi salesman.)
Of course, if someone had not had the great idea of an LCD screen on the back of a "proper" camera, such a device would not be necessary.
Swivi make a similar but smaller viewfinder hood. Have you seen it? Even so I'm sure you will still want one of the bigger ones.
"Proper"? As opposed to one of those credit card sized cameras ("It's wonderful. It fits in my pocket/handbag (purse) and I hardly know it's there!"). But the images they produce aren't very good.

Oh. Now that I've read the comment quoted here I see that I missed the word "reversed" about the wingnut. I thought you were attaching the washer and wing nut to the other end of the screw/bolt. Not the same end as the head. Makes sense now!

Problem solved!
I have found the missing thumbscrew. When I dropped it - and it shot off into thin air (what is thin air?) - I was turning the tab bracket round to put the camera and viewfinder into an old camera bag that I use for storage. The two items won't go in when they are assembled. Too long.
I heard the thumbscrew bounce across the desk top but couldn't see where it had landed. It is a kneehole desk with two plinths of drawers. I had removed the bottom drawer previously on the relevant side but looked in vain for the thumbscrew.
The four sides of each plinth have a cut out at the bottom (to create four feet at the corners, I suppose).
I decided to have another look and saw something on the patterned carpet. I was wearing my reading glasses (as I must have been previously) and so wasn't sure. But in the correct glasses I saw that it was the missing thumbscrew.
After it had dropped off the desk it must have bounced or rolled and gone through the cut out and into the plinth.
So all's well that ends well.
PS: LensBeginner. Sorry to have declined your comment about a wingnut on an ordinary screw (a machine screw?). If a thumbscrew can be used without a wing nut so can a machine screw. Except that the head is almost the same size as the threaded area. The thumbscrews have a one centimetre head and three millimetre threaded area.

I've been on my hands and knees with a torch in the general area of where I last had the thumbscrew, looked under furniture, emptied things it could have fallen in to - all without any luck. I even thought of buying a metal detector. (No, not really).
I have now rediscovered a website address for GGS (?) who make Swivi viewfinders and have e-mailed them to see if they do stock spares, or can give me details of the thumbscrews they use and, presumably, buy from general DIY stores. I await their reply.

LensBeginner
I've just had a look at your screw and wingnut idea (http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NDE0WDc1MA==/z/j98AAOxyLm9S~fdz/$_35.JPG) but it wouldn't work on the Swivi viewfinder I have (the Foldable LCD 3.0X model) as the thumbscrew goes into the viewfinder body. No way to use a wingnut. Perhaps you just meant generally.
See this video for an idea of the viewfinder: New Gear – Swivi LCD View Finder .
By the way, when I referred to a tongue in the camera baseplate, Swivi call it a tab.
I am not a salesman for Swivi! Just a delighted user of the viewfinder - with a screw loose (or a thumbscrew missing).

You're probably aware of the excellent Swivi viewfinder/eyepiece that shades the LED from the sun. Amazon, Ebay, etc. There's a thread on this forum somewhere.

Thanks for those replies:
LensBeginner: I was thinking of a Swivi thread/forum or one for viewfinders, rather than a K-01 one. Just happened to be that the K-3 forum was near to my camera. I didn't try the K-01 forum .
Voice of Reason: You got the pun. Excellent! ;-)
von Baloney: Wow. That's a lot of computer parts. I would have bought a new camera or Swivi in the time it would take to browse them.

Sorry, Mr Moderator. This is in the wrong thread, I know. But I've spent the last half hour or more trying to find a general "Start a thread" link. Then I found this one, but don't have a Pentax K-3. I DO have a K-01 and perhaps that is near enough! Could you can move the thread for me? Thanks.

I have been trying to find a thumbscrew for my Swivi viewfinder. (Called a thumb knob in some countries, I gather).

I dropped one of the two that hold the viewfinder hood to the camera bracket and can't find it. The reversible piece that turns round to attach it to the tripod socket. (Is that clear?).
I'm guessing it is a 4mm thread!
The Swivi and associated website don't seem to offer spare parts. And DIY shops don 't have them as small as 4mm (apart from trade-only ones which have a wider variety but don't seem accessible to amateurs).
I have done searches for topics on this forum but didn't find one about replacement thumbscrews. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how did you solve it?

I should say I lost the thumbscrew at home, not in long grass, etc, on location so I'm amazed I can't find it. Of course, it will turn up as soon as I can buy a new one. If I can!

I have received my Swivi foldable LCD viewfinder and it works just fine. One small point, I need to find an Acra Swiss quick release plate that will fit a Manfrotto tripod. The "track" for the plate on the tripod (which I use for video) is much wider (almost double width) than the baseplate that comes with the Swivi - but someone will make one I'm sure. Carryspeed (see below) don't seem to.
I watched a 9-minute video on my computer (New Gear – Swivi LCD View Finder ) - yes, it's not "viewfinder" - in which an expert demonstrates the Swivi that is attached to Canon cameras which have viewfinders. So why did he need a Swivi viewfinder?
Carry Speed (www.carryspeed.com/products) make the Swivi viewfinder, I think. They have an instructional video, too - in case any forum user still has doubts about the Swivi.
One more link: www.swiviusa.com - takes you to Carry Speed..
I hope this doesn't count as advertising . . . ! I'm not an employee of Swivi, Carryspeed or Cheesy Cam, or anyone else!

I think I'm getting myself a bit mixed up here. I don't think a K-01 claims to be a DSLR does it?
It was while I was looking for a body-only Pentax camera so that I could use the Pentax lenses that I had that I came across the K-01. I had never heard the term "mirrorless" and so it didn't mean anything to me. Don't have time or the patience to go through a big research programme when I want a new camera. Or to read photography magazines.
My istDL camera had stopped working in Auto Focus mode, although it can do occasionally, and so I decided the time had come to replace it. A quick on-line search found the K-01 and I decided that was it. I only found the lack of viewfinder after I had started to use it. So thanks to all those on Pentax Forum who supplied the information about the loupe and other devices that overcome the problem.
By the way, does the lack of battery power affect the MF/AF use? I use rechargeable batteries and the battery status indicator rarely shows more than half full (one of the two segments is back) even when fresh out of the charger. Maybe that should be "used rechargeable batteries" and I should switch to non-rechargeable.
That is one plus point about the K-01 for me - D-LI90 lithium-ion battery which has much more power than four AA batteries.

But that's the point. Going mirrorless doesn't seemed to have made much difference, particularly if, like me, it was to use the lenses I already had - and being able to get a camera body for a good price without having to buy the lens on a camera as well.
So, no real advantage in going mirrorless and an additional problem over the loss of the viewfinder (eye piece version as opposed to a monitor screen).

A flippant question so don't take me too seriously. Can a DSLR camera still be called that if R stands for Reflex which refers to route the images takes from the lens to the eye-piece viewfinder? (Z-like). I'm assuming the "route" is fairly straight in a mirrorless camera. How about DSLVML cameras? Digital Single Lens Viewfinder and Mirror Lacking camera;).

Thank you, mrNewt. It looks good. Can't wait for my Swivi to arrive by courier.
I think pocketability is over rated. I was using a reasonably-sized camcorder once - not pocket-sized nor one that you have to sit on your shoulder. And a passer-by - obviously a pocket-sized user - said "My, that's a big camera!". Really?
I'm not showing off when using a large camera, I just want one that works properly and gives good footage.
But that's outside this forum. . .

Thanks for that, Tony. Not sure whether you are a fellow sufferer or having a go . . .! I'l assume the better option.
Actually, I searched the forums to try to find out why mirrorless cameras were needed and failed to find one (please tell me where if I missed the discussion). So I did a general search and found an article on a personal website (that is, not a forum) which said it was to keep the camera smaller. This enabled people to put such cameras in their pocket and not worry about carrying them. I thought that was the point of credit card-sized cameras - although they won't perhaps be as good for creating big enlargements and close-ups.
In fact, my K-01 camera and my previous Pentax istDL are the same size, and neither will go in my pocket. Admittedly, I use the same lenses on my new body-only purchase camera and not the new slim lens that is available..

Can't help you with Cheshire as a whole, but one part of the south of the county - Nantwich - is featured on my A Dabber's Nantwich website which you might like to see (www.dabbersnantwich.me.uk).

Or you could try viewing some DVDs ("Cheshire Curiosities") I made with amateur colleagues (www.jonborovideos.me.uk). I hope that's not advertising. We don't make a penny from the sale of the videos. But the local church benefits.

So, I may not get round to taking images for the sheer joy and satisfaction of it to be able to post them on the forum. What I take are for the websites I run. Sorry, Jean

Yes, I did. But even though the sun was behind me my face was brightly lit and, as I said, reflected in the screen, blocking the image in the screen.

By the way (1): I CAN spell loupe! Don't know why I went for loop. You must be wondering "A journalist and he can't spell?!"

By the way (2): I didn't go for the GGS Perfect Foldable LCD viewfinder in the end. I decided to buy the GGS Swivi Foldable 3x viewfinder on E-bay.

Amazon do one as well:

GGS Perfect foldable LCD viewfinder for Canon, Nikon, Sony and Other DSLR cameras (ggs3.0x LCDVF) £44 + £11.54 - from Texas actually and with a wide delivery date range (into June). I might just go for that.

Do they also do one for the K-01 or are you saying this will fit? No, it's not cheap, but cheaper than changing to a camera with a viewfinder.

Sorry I thought I had come up with something new in suggesting a viewfinder that would go into the hotshoe. The idea has obviously be round for some time.:o

I tried using the loop (picking up the suggestion that it could be hand-held against the LCD monitor) and struggled.
I held the camera in my left hand, and the loop against the monitor with my right hand. I couldn't press the release button! No third hand.
I suppose I could use the self-portrait set-up. Press the button and in the delay while I would normally be running into place on front of the camera, line-up the camera and make sure the camera has focussed.
Perhaps glue and taping the loop to the camera is the best idea!

I suppose someone could always invent a stand-alone viewfinder that could be slotted into the flashgun hot shoe on top of the camera, which would be better than nothing and much better than guessing if the camera is pointing in the right direction.

Why did you buy a K-01?

What a disaster ! I failed to notice that the K-01 does not have a viewfinder. A bit like a car not having a steering wheel - you tend to assume a new purchase has one.
But I thought I would try it out before commenting/complaining. I went out on a sunny day (May 7) as I think it makes for the best pictures. I found the subject I wanted and pointed the camera towards it. I could see a vague image of the subject - but it was obstructed by a reflection of myself looking back at me in the LCD screen, perfectly lit by the sun.
The camera may have lots of good points but if I can't aim the camera properly they won't be too much use. The K-01 reminds me of those credit card sized cameras that people buy because it fits in their pocket or handbag (purse) neatly and isn't too heavy to carry around all day.
I bought the K-01 because I already have a Pentax isDL and can use the same lenses

Just introducing myself (as suggested by the forum people!).
As you will see in my profile I'm a retired journalist who likes working on websites (for local groups and myself) which is why I have a camera - pictures make a good website even more than text. I also enjoy making videos - when the editing software doesn't play up!
Off now to complain about the K-01 . . .!:(
