645 lenses, what does the * stand for?

I could buy a used 300 FA* F4 for about $250 -300 more than I could pay for a 300 A F4. Ignoring the dollar factor does anyone have an idea of which would be the better lens for film? My crude understanding was that this A lens is very highly regarded and is a very sharp lens, but that the * line of lenses might even be better, even though in this case it is the FA * 300. If both are in good shape would I even be able to see a difference. Both are F4, IF lenses, and I could spring for the extra $$ if the FA* is sharper than the regular A 300 F4 lens. Thanks Norm

I can get some older though good electronic flash units, the 5600 or 5800, not sure which. Will it fit on the 645 and will it properly sync and work with the 645n? Thanks Norm

using the 645 fa 120mm f4.0 lens

I am a bit embarrassed to admit that I am not sure how to use this lens. I can't find the "owners manual" if there is such a thing. The auto focus on the 645nii is good but it seems to have to start completely out of focus and then focus in on the subject ( and it is slow). Just very different than 35 mm lenses and that's ok. But what does the full and limit switch mean on the lens barrel and If limit = macro , can that be used when the lens ring is on "A"? Thanks for any help. As I said I am a little embarrassed since I have used minolta SLRs since the 60s but I am just a little bit at a loss here. THanks Norm

Does the 67 to 645 adaptor change the field of view

Thanks for the reference. Doing the math, if I am applying it correctly would mean that a 67 55-100mm lens would be the equivalent of a 33-60 mm lens when used with the adapter on the 645. Is this right? Thanks

Does the 67 to 645 adaptor change the field of view

I haven't been able to find a discussion of this on line. I would guess that increasing the distance between the front of the lens to the film plane would change the field of view slightly. Does any one know of a chart showing what change if any the adaptor introduces? In other words, will a 100mm 67 lens act like a 95mm 645 lens when used on the 645 or vice versa, or is there no change at all? Thanks Norm

I have gotten a 645Nii ( I am happy and lucky) and I have just been looking at the 645 A and FA lenses. I came across mention of the 67 to 645 adaptor and so I figured I would start to look at reviews of the 67 lenses. Perhaps I am wrong, but it seems that the 67 line of lenses is across the board of really high quality. Would there be a downsize other than the physical size of the lens to going with some of the really excellent 67 lenses on the 645? And if not, do any of the members here have a recommendation of a 67 over a 645, or vice versa, for any specific given focal length. Thanks Norm

Pentax A 645 35mm F 3.5 price

I was looking up what a fair price on this lens might be. In the lens section at the top of he page for this lens, it says av. price 484$ at the time that this was compiled (aug 2011), but when I scroll down the page to the price graph, it looks like ~800$ was the rough current price for the same. Any idea why such a difference in the information. As I looked at the graph I would have guessed the av price would have been higher than the price listed in the top of the chart. The data seems to have been compiled and last updated at the same time. Does anyone know what a fair/reasonable price today would be for that lens in exc condition? Thanks Norm

Thanks, I found references to other lenses that were used with adapters in earlier posts on this site, but nothing that was actually manufactured for pentax. Norm

35 A vs FA lens

I should have been clearer, I meant to refer to the 35mm F3.5 A vs the FA model and had wondered if there was a quality difference between the two. This would be for the 645nii. Norm

Next step film

I am getting a 645Nii body and a 120 lens from Keh. My wife said it 's going to be for my birthday later this month, so now what film should I use. In the 35mm world I loved slides and mostly had used velvia 50 and provia 100. 10 Years early I had used ektachrome but I preferred the richer saturation of the fuji, at least that's how I perceived it. I would occasionally get some print film and in reading about the 120 films it seems most are color negative today. Any recommendations for color positive film, and for that matter, any personal favorites for the color neg? I don't have a scanner yet either and it seems that someday that maybe part of my work flow. Thanks Norm

buying a 645n?

I have seen a 645nii with a grid screen. That adds 30$ to the same camera without it. Is that a worthwhile accessory. I have read all I can and am not sure. I would love to hear anyone's personal experience pro or con. Also, any idea on the body cap size? Thanks Norm

If you had a chance to by the 645nii with a camera back included would you choose the 120 or thee 220. I am looking at KEH and the camera bodies with either film back included seem to be the same price. Any suggestions as to which one is a good starter one? Thanks Norm

buying a 645n?

I have been trying to learn what I can about the 645n and from what I have read the 645Nii had some more bells and whistles but I don't think I really need to jump up to that body. My question is that as I have gone on line to try and get an idea of price, it seems that on ebay most of the pentax 645 compatible bodies and lenses come from Japan. The 645n seems to be roughly half the price of the 645nii from Japan but on KEH the 645nii is less than the japanese prices. Is this just a case of supply and demand in different markets? The british ebay prices also seem higher for the n model. I don't want to buy "cheap" because in the long run that always is more expensive, and I like the idea of having someone stand behind what they have sold. Other than KEH are there other reputable dealers in used material. I do know about B&H and Adorama, Just kind of curious about fair prices and where to find the 645n in this country. THanks and sorry for a wondering post. Norm

Pardon my ignorant question, but on the earlier reference to the 150mm lens at KEH, there was a (67) following the lens name and description. What does that refer to? Thanks Norm

It's been a long journey to get here. I used various minolta 35mm cameras from the 60's till ~2000 when the digital but bit me. After a few different digital cameras I am going back to film. I still listen to records so I guess I am an analog guy. I have decided to go for a medium format camera, for pleasure not as a job. I used a 6X6 over 20 years ago for several rolls of film and loved the increased image and clarity. Due to crappy eyes auto focus is a prime requesite so auto focus is what I am looking for even though I am told the view finders in MF cameras are quite good. So after reading (alot) I have arrived mostly likely looking for a pentax-most likely the 645N. I came across this site and I am amazed at the wealth of information and experience here. I am sure I will be posting questions in the future. So, hello and thanks Norm
