Sigma 8-16mm vs 10-20mm old and new versions

Thing about stitching is it doesn't give you that awesome wide angle "look" when you get nice and close to your subject, stitching can't really replace the perspective distortion of 8 or 10mm

Sigma 8-16mm vs 10-20mm old and new versions

Hey I was in this situation recently, tossing up between a 10-20 a DA 15 or the Sigma 8-16. I was after a landscape lens so aperture didn't really matter, but I was after a lens that would last me a long time, was very sharp and was very wide. I settled on the Sigma 8-16 because it is the sharpest and the widest out of all the ultrawide APS-C lenses you can get for the Pentax system (not to mention its fantastic build quality!)

While I was seriously considering the 10-20 I found from reading reviews that it just wasn't good enough optically especially in the corners while the 8-16 shines corner to corner. While I'm no pixel peeper I certainly want glass that can keep up with the ever improving bodies. Another thing to note is the difference between 8 and 10mm is quite large and you certainly appreciate the weird perspective that 8mm gives you when you're out shooting. Check out Ed's review at photouniverse, his glowing review certainly pushed me over the edge into buying it.

I wouldn't recommend waiting for the Pentax ultrawide, like other Pentax lenses it's likely to be pricey and likely to be outperformed by the Sigma/Tamron/Samyang equivalents (looking at you DA 20-40)

In terms of filters, the only one you would really want to use on an ultrawide is an ND filter so if you shoot a lot with ND filters it probably isn't your lens

Amazing Pricing here in the MarketPlace

I've noticed this as well. Often I see someone offer something for sale, I go check it out on KEH and find it's considerably cheaper! You know something is wrong when an established business with overheads etc is offering items at a price lower than a private sale! For instance check out the DA 15 for sale by innivus, for $525 it's more expensive than buying it brand new and $70 more than buying from KEH! Or check out imrenhe selling a WR kit lens for $90! One is selling for $70 in LN condition at KEH

Pentax HD limited lenses AU pricing released

Original SMC lenses have been taken off the site now unfortunately. Pricing for the DA 15 was 649 and the DA 21 599, I think the DA 40 was $400 but I can't be 100%

That means in AU terms the DA 15 has been increased by $250 the DA 21 increased by $100 and the DA 40 $100.

Suffice to say unless there is some significant improvement with the new coating you'd be an idiot to buy the new DA 15 at the very least (in Australia anyway)

Shootout #2 - DA 15 Ltd / Tamron 17-50 @17 / DA* 16-50 @16 / Sigma 10-20 @16

Interesting, I prefer the look of the Tamron to the DA 15. Distortion on the Sigma ruined it for me and 16-50 was somewhere in the middle

Thanks so much, after seeing those images I'm really struggling to see major differences between the two lenses. I think I'll just stick to the kit lens at 18mm

Thanks Matt and everyone else, argh so many choices! I'm definitely willing to spend some money for the right glass but here in Aus there aren't a lot of choices when it comes to rentals so I've never been able to try anything wider than the kit lens which I've always been quite happy with (for landscapes). I have thought a lot about the sigma 10-20 but everyone raves about the DA 15 so much I thought I would give that more of a serious thought

I've been following that forum for a while mdodrill but it's sometimes hard to tell whether it's the photographer or the lens! I've seen some great shots in that thread but there are also plenty of crappy ones as well and none that directly compare it with the kit lens

Just wondering what the difference in IQ and sharpness would be with a kit lens at f8-11 at 18mm compared to a DA 15 at F8-11? Would anyone be able to provide some comparison shots? While I understand the DA 15 has a bit of a following due to its size and flare resistance I'm just wondering whether the optical difference is worth the 600+ price tag the DA 15 attracts?

Cheers

I'm going on a trip to NYC/Grand Canyon/Yosemite in a few months time and am seriously considering this lens for the trip. I've also been looking at the Sigma 10-20 3.5 but I'm leaning towards this lens for some reason! Am I crazy to give up the Sigma when I can get it cheaper and it has a wider field of view? The shots I've seen from this lens really just stand out at me as well as it's extreme portability would be useful
