I am very bad, but trying to get better, at posing people. One tip I got from a youtube video is that when posing couples to not let the guy put a hand in a pocket. Too casual and saying the wrong mesage.......unless the dad is the photographer then hands in pockets is the way to go.

Suggestion for a fast prime walk around lens

I think you have one heck of a setup right now. The 31mm and 77mm for outrageous quality shots, world class!!! and then the 16 to 50 for a weather resistant pro lens. If you truly don't shoot wide that often then sell the 16 to 50 and pick up a 50 to 135 or 60 to 250 for the weather resistant option and go forth and be equipped like a boss.

"Must have" Pentax cameras

I am saying the LX is a pleasure to run. I would include it in the must have. I was just fondling mine and snapping off some shots today thinking to myself, while I was doing so, how nothing digital brings me as much joy. Attach it's fa-1w view finder for a couple hours then switch to the fb-1 with fd-1 attached for a kick. Then take it up a notch with the fb-1 / fc-1 combination. I had about 7 or 8 frames left in a roll that I went out to shoot off to empty the camera. Intentions were to empty the camera to take photos of the LX to put her up for sale and raise money for a DA 50-135 lens that I think I want for ski season. After shooting those 7 frames plus another roll I have decided to keep her and maybe even put the k5iis on the auction block and go film only for a while till the k3 goes on sale. So in my own self interest I am going to say that the k5iis is a must have. Let me know if you need a slightly used copy.

I am in the same kind of search. I have a 2 year old and a wife. I have been wanting to do some off camera flash for a while now. Speed and ease of use are huge when you are balancing keeping the kid happy, wife involved and engaged, and the photography equipment functioning. I have enjoyed the blog Strobist: Lighting 101 and have found it to be very helpful. The author has a link for a light stand, umbrella, bracket, and corded flash sync for around $110. I might pull the trigger on that but am leaning towards a lumiquest softbox III and a way to mount a coldshoe to my camera tripod. Any recomendations on how to do that?

You know I thought of that after I posted and it would be smaller than the 18-135, be a pentax brand lens, and give a great standard focal length. I almost exclusively shoot with a 50mm prime and truly enjoy it but every now and then wish for a telephoto. Dont over look the 50mm in that price range. Go back and look at your favorite photos from the 18 -135 and see what focal length they were shot at. If most are in the lower range, like 18 to 40, then go with the 35. If you like the images in the 40 to 65 range maybe consider the 50mm. Now if you like the pictures in the 70 to 135 range you may be a telephoto fan and your wife knows you better than you know your self. P.S. you are not going to tell my wife that I asked if yours has a sister are you?

That is a tough price range to find a prime that I know of. I would say go out and play with the upper range of that lens, I would love a 300mm focal length in my bag. Hug that wife and thank her for supporting your addiction........does she have a sister?

I dont have a k30 specifically but on the k5iis when you are selecting your auto focus point you hold down the center button to switch over to using the 4 way to chose the other functions. Cant speak for the viewfinder.

Really enjoyed this post. Great writing, kept me enthralled the entire length of the story. I am an amateur who is just starting to look for the first angle at stepping into the world of being paid to do what I love. You didn't sell me on buying a nikon but you did sell me on the DA*50-135. I Have a K5iis as well as an LX. Out of curiosity have you ever put the 50-135 on the lx and taken pictures to test if they happen to play well together? That is how I stumbled on this post, searching for something like "50-135 film". Also how do you feel about the weather resistance of our LX cameras? I ask because I live in the mountains of Colorado and am positioning myself to be a vacation adventure photographer/ back country guide, shooting in all weather conditions. Regardless if you find the time to answer my question thanks for the post.

I like the presentation of the first picture. Not too graphic, the cut stocks telling the story of the cutting, the orange foot and the clump of feathers show the loss of life. I wonder what the person with the hands behind his or back is thinking. What a posture to take. The photo tells a story. I do wish I looked at the photo first then read the caption to know how the photo stands without the background info.
