Jessops 300TTL

Thanks for that. Tv & Av do seem to be supported. I took the flash off and put it back on the camera & now I'm getting different functioning - I get a quick flash & then a 'main' flash. Is the camera in P-TTL mode now? The flash doesn't support P-TTL but I'm getting results, not always though - a dark brown dog in a dark interior is being obstinately refused. Perhaps the flash isn't connected to the camera properly?

Anyway, the most fun you can get photographically for £2 I reckon :)

I've just picked up one of these from a well known auction site - bet nobody can guess which one :)

I'm a complete novice at flash, so...

1. Is 'Anyone using this flash with an *istDS'?

2. Can anyone point me to good basic instruction in the use of TTL & how it works please?

3. I have got it to fire in TTL mode, but I'm not sure how much control I have over it:

a - Strength of flash - seemingly no control?
b - Bounce - not practically useable because of a?
c - ISO - this seems restricted to 400 - camera restriction?
d - Camera mode M - is this the only mode?

I haven't tried it yet in the 2 Auto modes, but it is probably there that I can use it to the greatest effect?

Thanks in advance for any help!

It certainly looks as though it could be turned - just as well I didn't try!

I'll leave the infinity issue for now.

I'll let you know how I get on :)

Brilliant Tom - an answer at hyper speed!

On closer inspection someone else has opened it up, leaving the 4th screw head pristine! Actually the heads aren't too bad (he says optimistically). I'll undo the 3 screws with the mount facing down. If I understand correctly I should get cleaning access to the rear of the element but not be able to remove it (without removing the actuating lever first).

One thing I've noticed is that infinity doesn't seem to correspond to the furthest manual focus - could this have to do with the previous attempt? If so can I fix this?

:)

I just received one of these bad boys, which is in good condition except for light fungus on the inside of the rear element. There are 2 plastic fingers opposite each other on the concentric holder of the rear optic - these look like an easy way to remove the rear optic with the right tool?
Anyone shed any light on this please?

Thanks for that - mine fits with a little play too.

I tested the spring screw before trying it, nice & tight - does seem like a potential problem area though. Until I get more confidence with the adapter, I'll dedicate the camera to M42 lenses. A happy Pentax punter now though!

Fed up with being a wuss I finally tried the adapter on the A3 body - of course it's really easy to install & almost as easy to remove. Encouraged I mounted it on a istDS and taken a few snaps with a nice old Chinon 50mm - brilliant. Thanks folks!

PS. The K100DS & Tak 135mm are up for surgery now!

I've been trying this unsuccessfully for quite a while, I'm fairly certain where the pin is located but no luck. I've been putting off the obvious solution too: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/120-general-technical-troubleshooting/167741-m42-adapter-stuck-solution.html
with thoughts of dismantling the lens. I'll have a go at dismantling the mount though I think, at worst I should be able to salvage the lens.

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, this was/is still the problem - https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/120-general-technical-troubleshooting/233...elp-pls-5.html

my favourite camera & lens is still just a paperweight - hence a certain nervousness even with a genuine Pentax adapter

I've got an old A3 body, so I think I'll use that first to try my M42 lenses ( those with the tak pin last )

Thanks everybody for your replies & encouragement :)

Hi Folks,

I had a problem with a generic M42 adapter, a K100D & a SMC Tak 135mm - I managed to get all 3 nicely tied together permanently. Since then I've bought a Pentax M42 adapter but not brought myself to try it out with any of my M42 lenses (panic sets in every time I think about it!)

This has to stop, so the question is: are there any lenses or manufacturers known to cause problems with a genuine Pentax M42 adapter?

Secondly: Are there any Pentax cameras that have issues with a genuine Pentax M42 adapter?

Cheers!

B&W Getting Started - A Plan?

Thought I'd better post my progress so far: Tbh a bit on the sluggish side, but I've got the Rodinal, good size darkbag and a Watson 100 with about 5 reusable cartridges. I've also got an open, expired, slightly used 30m of Jessops PAN 400. I'm thinking this prolly isn't a match made in heaven with thr Rodinal, but it's an excellent start! I've also discovered that bulk B&W film is no longer easy or cheap to come by in the UK - guess it's supply & demand. I do have a ridiculously small problem with loading the bulk film, outlined here:

http://https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/film-processing-scanning-darkroom/...-100-help.html

Hopefully my next post will include a snap or 2 :)

Cheers all!

Watson 100 - Help!

Hi folks! I've got my Watson 100 bulk loader, I've got my bulk filn, I've even got the instructions - I should be all set, right? Wrong! Perhaps senility is creaping up faster than anticipated: My problem is simple: I don't know which way the bulk film goes into the loader. Actually the instructions are clear:

- Hold the film in your right had so that it unwinds from the top in a counter-clockwise direction.

That is absolutely clear, however the following picture in the instructions seem to show the film exactly the opposite way round (film unwinding clockwise from the bottom) ! I'm guessing this has just been included to confuse me :)

Any clarity would be great!

Unbelievable! the power of the Internet. Whether or not this is a permanent solution I don't know - what I do know is that 24 hours after that simple 'fix' it's still fixed. Any idea whether this really is a long term fix? Thank you so much for sharing!

Thanks to everyone regarding Jon Goodman - what a teriffic chap! The camera needs new seals & now I'm pretty sure it is worth it!

That may well be it John. It seems to have no foam cushioning at all, despite appearances. It is flush with the back metal!

Any tips for me to repair this please?

I've just received a nice Spotmatic 2, in nice condition but with an issue: the mirror sometimes stays up after shutter release. I've tried to figure out if there is a pattern or rhyme behind the occurrences, but so far no luck. A professional refurbishing is probably economically not viable, so is there anything I can do?

Any help gratefully appreciated!

Congratulations! I'm super impressed with your results!

if I got anywhere close to the sharpness you've achieved, I'll certainlty be inspired to persevere.

Could you maybe post an example before PP please? I'm really interested in the 'raw' sharpness of the scan.

I take heart that you are doing 35mm negative scanning - reading elsewhere I get the impression 35mm might just be too small. Ok, the V300 isn't a V500 but a good place for me to start.

Thanks for your encouraging results and sharing!

Thanks Tuco - With your help a cunning plan is taking shape:

XP2 developed locally would get the scanning going.

Rodinal sounds like a good place for me to begin developing with at least.

Ilford Kentmere 100 & 400

Fixer unknown?

Btw I'd better not tell you what I paid for the as new K1000 or Spotty 2 :)

Does that relate to Rodinal 09 too?

That's really worth bearing in mind, especially in the beginning. I really don't know whether this analogue thing will be fun/practical for me.

I'm already heavily invested in a good used V300 (£20) :) I know it's going to be challenging to get much out of it, but hey, that's all part of the fun & I really enjoy improving my kit over time :)

Thanks for your thoughts!

I've recently invested in a K1000, Spotmatic 2 & an Epson V300 to test the analogue waters. I already have some lovely legacy Pentax M's & M42's. I'd like to experiment with B&W development at home due to the cost & availability of professional services. Unfortunately finances are a big constraint, so with that in mind:

1. I'm thinking Rodinal 09 - for it's longevity

2. If I get into this I'll definitely want to roll my own from bulk - with that in mind I thought Ilford Kentmere as a start as I can buy rolls to start with. Being from the UK I thought Ilford might be a good choice. Anyone any experience with the Rodinal & Kentmere combination?

3. I'll get a dark bag due to space constraints.

4. I'll start scanning from negatives & probably stick to viewing on screen, certainly for a while ( enough on my plate with this lot :)

It'll probably be too expensive to get the 1st few rolls professionally developed, but ideally I'll try that before developing at home.

Is this a good start? I'd really welcome your thoughts and suggestions!

A whopping thank you to everyone on these forums for sharing - you have been instrumental in reigniting my passion for photography in an affordable fashion!
