Thanks for the feedback! I agree, I like the contrast better in image 1. I think the sky colors are slightly better in image 2, but not hugely.
Glad to hear you like the composition! I guess I've been worried that a lot of my images are 'flat', maybe I'm looking too hard for it.
I agree the clouds aren't exceptional, but considering the number of evenings I've gone out and found clear blue skies, I'll take what I can get :) Highlights aren't blown, I was careful in lightroom to make sure of that. I just tried the clarity thing, it gives a bit more definition to the clouds but...I dunno, it just looks funny to me.
Cropped to a 16x9 ratio for desktop wallpaper, it does look pretty awesome :-)
Thank you! You're right, those houses are a bit too dark. I'll brush them up a bit. Yep, single images - medium aperture, manually focused on liveview, then lightroom sharpening/clarity, perfect effects dynamic contrast. I was careful to not sharpen the water or sky however, I think the contrast makes the buildings look extra sharp somehow.

These are two long exposure photos of the Boston skyline, taken from Memorial Drive on the Cambridge side (the MIT Sailing Pavilion to be precise). One while the sun was still above the horizon, one just after it dipped below. I like them both but they are a bit different. Any and all feedback appreciated! (my personal feeling is, I need some leading lines to join foreground and background)

Went out with some folks tonight for a shoot of the Zakim Bridge, in Boston. This is heavily processed, but I think it works well for this image.

Took this on my six month travel adventure. Getting up at 3am three days in a row sucks, but the pictures and experience were worth it. This is actually a combination of three exposures, for the ground, the sky, and Uluru.

It's been a while, so I probably should look at it again. The thing is, my usual photography style is wider. The portrait lens is something I'd like to keep in my bag, but it's more likely to be used at family events every couple of months. So for that, smaller and lighter is a plus.

lol, I know. For right now I'm probably just going to use my 50/1.8, since I have time before the kid is mobile. Doing all the research just made me think that maybe I was missing something.

Yeah, I know, I've actually considered it. It's just big and heavy. I was thinking if there could be something closer in size/weight to the 20-40, it would be a good companion. But it might not be technically possible.

I'm wondering if there's a lens out there, or if it's even technically possible. Something like a 55-80, f2.4, perhaps? I've been researching portrait lenses (going to be an uncle soon, and I'm the official family photographer). Plenty of primes in that range, and a few zoom lenses that cover it, but generally at a higher aperture. If there was a well made, decently compact lens for a smaller portrait range, I think it could be a real winner. Or, am I completely wrong and no one would buy it. Thoughts?

as others have said, the 15mm already has great contrast, so a polarizer would mostly be about reflections on this lens. On the rare occasion I've wanted it, I've just handheld my 72mm polarizer in front of the lens, it's worked fine. But generally I don't worry about it.

I agree the buffer write speed is slow. I've tried to turn it into a positive - now, when I click the shutter, I keep my eye to the viewfinder and continue thinking about the image for a few seconds before I pull away and review. I feel like it's actually helped me get more keepers by reducing the urge to point/click/review. But most of my shooting is landscapes/city, so speed isn't an issue.
complete agreement on the lcd light, it's really frustrating because I basically can't use it at all, I can't be bothered to go into the menu and change settings. I've even thought, the camera already has a frigging light sensor - couldn't they program a setting where, if the camera detects below a certain amount of ambient light, it automatically activates? But even just a setting on the info screen would be helpful.

Yes, I have a user mode for 'guest' that disables it so the reverse should be possible. I think you can program anything that isn't a physical switch.

Thanks! I'll think about stopping into a brewery or vineyard, but I'm driving myself around and have a long standing rule of 'when driving, no drinking, period'. So it'd have to be walking distance from wherever I'm staying, or part of an organized tour with transportation. But maybe! Birding hasn't been a thing of mine, but I could be fun for an afternoon...will have to check that out. Especially if kayaks are involved, I love kayaking. And thanks for the site - I look forward to browsing in detail!
Awesome! I'll think about the luge ride...I'm not generally much of a thrill seeker :o but it could be interesting! Hadn't planned on going whale watching, I've been fortunate enough to do that a couple times in other locations so I'd rather put the time/money towards other adventures. But good to know about timing.

Hello Kiwi Pentaxians! I'm an American Pentaxian, who will be landing in Christchurch in just a few days. I was hoping to ask the advice of fellow photographers on my itinerary, as I'm planning everything a bit last minute. My only excuse is that I'm on a 6 month trip around the world, and have spent the past two months in Southeast Asia.
- First, a simple question: is there a place in Christchurch where I could pick up a used tripod? I haven't been carrying one with me, but I think I'll want it in NZ. Would prefer to save a bit of money and buy used, as I'll likely be ditching it when I leave.
- I have approximately one month in NZ. I land in CHC on Feb 27, and pick up my rental car (Apex) on March 1. I return the rental car to Auckland on March 29. So that's the timing I have to work with. My thought was to spend around 20 days in the South Island, for the scenery, with the remainder up North. Does this make sense?
- My vague route looks remarkably like this. Is that a good starting plan? I'm traveling by myself and staying in hostels, so I can change plans as I wish for the most part. I'm all about scenery; short (~2 hr) tramps are fine, but I'm not looking for more. My preference would be to not have any lengthy driving days...maybe 3-4 hours in the car max per day? Is that reasonable?
- Finally, if anyone would be interested in a chat when I pass through, it'd be my pleasure to buy you a beer :)
