Pentax K-3 Officially Announced (See our detailed preview here!)

If the human language had a mathematical precision, with no nuances, context etc. you would have a point. But it hasn't. And parroting someone in order to avoid a question you don't want to answer, deviating the attention to a secondary subject, that adds context.
Anyway, the message is clear: I'll look for information somewhere else.

Pentax K-3 Officially Announced (See our detailed preview here!)

Yes; DXOMark, DPReview, Imaging Resource tests for example. The Toshiba sensor from the D7100 can't match the 16MP Sony sensor's ability to bring up shadow information, and even when scaled, it has "only" 13.7 EV compared to 14.1.

However, what I was asking was if you have information about the K-3's sensor being a Toshiba as well, since it's not clear from the preview; there was no need for the aggressive response.
But, I guess it was just a supposition.

ObamaCare reaches the Supreme Court

No offense Ratmagiclady but you have no clue what you are talking about. The Democratic Party had a super majority over the federal government during the healthcare debate. The Democratic Party could have passed what ever legislation they wanted without the Republicans being able to do a thing about it. The Republicans had no power in committee to do a thing to change it. Any changes to Obamacare were made to please Democratic members of congress to get them to vote for it.

Must own to have a valid opinion

I've not been around this site very long, but I have noticed a trend. It seems that, in the eyes of many, one's opinion on any particular item (camera, lens, flash, etc...) ain't worth horse pucks unless you own that item.

How many of you agree with that?

For those that do, do you not think that ownership brings with it its own bias:
  1. Presumably you bought it because you like it.

  2. No one wants to admit they chose a lemon

It seems to me then, logic would dictate that if your opinion on a particular item is not worth anything until you own it, you made the decision to buy based on worthless information! :hmm:

Alternatively maybe everyone is entitled to have an opinion, and perhaps all opinions are equally valid. They are, after all, just opinions.

Further, it seems that one should be able to have and express their opinion in an open forum without having to sustain an attack for it.

That last remark was just my opinion...

Won't be me ruining it. Why should I overpay for a product because of some union? Japanese cars are by all stretches far superior to American garbage. (So are the Korean cars BTW) And they're built by non union workers. Heck some of them are even assembled in the US. By non union workers who know that they have a job because they prove their worth. Not by a union worker who has it because he pays dues and all he wants to do is get home for a beer or 6 and gives a fat rat's hind quarters about what he turns out.

But I still prefer the stuff that's still made in Japan. Dang we can't even build a decent camera in the USA. We use to. Till unions got in the way.

Only thing UAW ever did for American car companies is bankrupt them with inferior workmanship.

Texas Voter ID Law exempts elderly and gun owners

Since a TX "Concealed Handgun License" is a state issued document (just like a driver's license) I think the CHL part makes sense... as long as the permit has the permit holder's photo on it (TX CHL application requires 2 passport style photos be included so it is logical to assume the permit includes a photo).

I don't get the old folks exemption... Age is no proof of voter eligibility. Furthermore how can they prove they were born in 1931 or earlier without showing ID? Unless perhaps a faded old birth certificate is considered sufficient (and what about people born where birth certs were not provided or births even tracked?).

As for using your mail to prove residence? If that were sufficient, I could take Jose Morales' mail with me to the polls and vote as him. Why? because I get mail addressed to him all the time using my address. As far as I know he hasn't lived here for several years but I'd be willing to bet he is still registered at my address. Come on... even poor democrats (though they have no monopoly on poverty) can get government issued photo IDs. Heck, photo IDs should be a requirement for getting their public assistance if they are that bad off. I don't see what the hardship is... And if they don't want an ID because they are afraid of the government or are not here legally, then it is their fault that they can't vote. This is not Jim Crow or discrimination... it is about the validity of the democratic process.

Mike

p.s. I don't think a student ID, even one from a state school, would work Gene asI do not believe that they are considered "legal ID" anywhere off campus except maybe at the movie theater... LOL

No, we give every citizen WHO REGISTERS the right to vote. Oddly enough, those places you can get a license? You can get state issued photo ID. Also oddly enough, due to the motor voter bill, you should be able to take care of registering to vote at the same time.

Hmm. How oppressively convenient.

So if we extend that logic out a bit we should probably just allow ANYONE showing up at the poll a ballot??? Requiring voter registration probably ALSO disproportionately affects the poor, and minorities, and undereducated. We probably ought to do away with that too, right? They don't need to "regularly" carry it, Gene. They just have to carry it to the polling place when they want to vote. But I do agree with your question, "Why exempt old people?" In my opinion, any requirements should be across the board and equal for ALL.

K5 metering and color temperature woes

Having been the lead electrician at a convention and meeting room facility, I believe it would be very unusual for the lighting to be 100% tungsten, which is another word for incandescent. The resulting heat and cost of using the lights would be prohibitive. Also, unless the space is very large and the ceiling is over 40feet, it is unlikely that mercury vapor, metal halide or sodium vapor lights would be used. These are very intense lighting sources. It is more likely that the lighting is either florescent or a mix of fluorescent and incandescent, the florescent for instant on and economy and the incandescent for its dimming capabilities. Fluorescent lighting will change colors dependent on the part of the 60hz cycle you are experiencing at the moment your shutter opens. Any shutter speed faster than 1/60 will likely catch only part of the cycle and show color shifts randomly.
Looking at your picture, It looks like the perimeter is incandescent and the center is flourescent, a typical setup in meeting rooms.

Pentax Japan issues press release on sensor issue

I'm pretty surprised by how much slack is being given to Pentax on this issue. It reeks of fanboyism, so I guess Pentaxians are not SO different from nikonians and canonites, after all! Here is the deal: Pentax screwed up-- on their flagship camera. Yes, it's true. No one is calling for mass seppuku at Pentax HQ. What would be reasonable would be for Pentax to have a streamlined and consistent way for consumers to 1)confirm that they have an affected model and 2)get clear instructions on what to do and 3)receive a replacement QUICKLY from Pentax. Presumably, Pentax's QA is not so useless that they cannot identify potentially affected cameras from the serial number or manufacturing date. Set up a hotline/web site/whatever to confirm that your camera is elligible for return, and/or maybe to actually be a little proactive and contact wholesalers to whom were sent affected K-5s to recall them or inform customers. Thsi is not rocket science.

Instead, depending on which country you are in and which retailer you bought from, you get different answers on who to send it back to, a woefully uninformed (with respect the he existence of the problem) dealerbase,

I can only wonder what the poor engineers at Pentax must be thinking, after designing such a fantastic camera -- only to see it get crapped on by subpar QA/QC and PR.

No! Wheatfield and others, you completely misunderstand the nature of my post. You don't seem to realize that few outside of this forum and maybe a couple of other forums have a clue that there has been a problem with the K5 "stain". If I relied only on major reviewers' publications, I never would have heard about this.

You accuse me falsely by saying that I want "someone to fall on their sword". I could also say of you that "You like to put words in my mouth and twist my meaning". I do not want anyone fired over this. I want accurate information so that ALL consumers know that there are adequate answers so they can continue to spend their hard earned money on this brand. I am VERY happy that there is some sort of acknowledgment from Japan HQ and also in English. That allows the retailers to feel that they can also acknowledge the problem (which has not happened to date). But it only seems to cover those with current warranties. After the warranties are up, so sorry Charlie! Consumers NEED to know this. And it has not been publicized enough in the press. Or are you in favor of this being done with and consumers not allowed to know accurate information that could help them avoid a mistake?

So, in my opinion, it is NOT time to "put this baby back in its crib". It is time to press for follow-through and make sure that Pentax and the dealer network can effectively deal with this problem. What if a year or two from now, after any mention of this problem has died down, and many hapless consumers buy expensive used K5's, many still with "stains", but only discovered after the time when they could have returned it to the dealer of forum member??? What happens to Pentax's reputation then??? "Too bad", you might say? People do vote with their feet and I would like to see Pentax in as strong a position as possible. A whole lot of used sales does help fund new sales by the sellers of used equipment and is a big reason why Pentax is still in business. They are coming out with wonderful products and dealing with this problem in a way to deal with future customers, not just current ones, is a good clean way of maintaining good relationships and a good reputation.

Does this make sense from a longer-term business point of view?
