Using a CZ Jena Tessar on a Spotmatic

Well, if it means I have to buy myself a Praktica so I can use the lens, then I guess I'll have to make the 'sacrifice' :D
Oh, and it has a WLF. I love a WLF.

Here's the only picture I could manage to get off my phone so far:

One way or another, I will not let this lens just sit on my shelf!

I'm very glad you found this and commented! I was just trying to decide whether or not it would be okay to bother you with a PM since you had written that review and I knew you had the lens.

It doesn't have to be a Spotmatic - that just happened to be the camera that I already have that would fit the lens. I've had my K1000 for over 20 years and only recently got the Spotmatic, so I've got both screw mount and K-mount Pentax bodies, so I've been wanting an adapter anyway so I could use the three M42 lenses I got with the Spotmatic on the K1000, or on any Pentax DSLR I might eventually buy.

Is it 4.4 mm or 0.4mm? I just measured and measuring from the top of the thread to the top of the lens (with it standing "face down" on the table) then it measure 0.4mm.

I'm trying to get some pictures to load...

There's no pin. It's a very old version of the lens and it looks exactly like the one in the link I posted above. (CZJ_Tessar_2.8/50_T_(`54)_04 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!) The only difference is that his says "Carl Zeiss Jena" and mine says "C.Z. Jena".

Did some more testing - it starts hitting the mirror on the upswing a quarter turn from fully screwed, and on the way down, almost a full turn away from fully screwed. I am going to get a K-mount adapter and see how it works on the K1000 instead.

Didn't mean to sound naggy, but it had been a few hours since I'd posted. I was worried that I posted in the wrong section.

I didn't know that about DSLRs. At some point when I get one, then I might try this lens on it. But the reviewer was using it with a Spotmatic. It was definitely a later one than the one I have since he was using the K-mount adapter and mine still has the screw mount. I'm going to look into getting an adapter to see if I can use the Tessar on my K1000.

Thanks for your help!

This isn't mine, but I found this picture and it's exactly like the one I just got:

Mind doesn't have the k-mount adapter but everything else is the same.

Maybe it will work on my K1000 with an adapter, then?

Edited: Forgot to add that I found that picture from a review on this forum:

Thanks for the response! I can post a picture of it in a couple of hours when I get home. I only had the lens on briefly and it seemed to be able to focus past infinity, but I'll check that for sure before I say yea or nay.

I've got a Honeywell Pentax SP 500 Spotmatic. It's got the M42 screw mount, not the K-mount. I just bought a Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar f2.8 50mm lens that arrived in the mail today. Super excited. I put it on the Spotmatic and everything seemed fine. Loaded some film and the shutter would not fire with the lens screwed on. As I slowly unscrewed the lens, I'd then hear the mirror slap.

I put the camera in B mode to isolate the opening/closing to see what was going on. The shutter is firing, but it looks like the lens back is too far into the camera and preventing the mirror from flipping up. The final test was to put the lens on very slowly and test the shutter at different points. With the lens screwed in up to halfway or so, maybe a bit more, the mirror seems to have plenty of room, but with it screwed in all the way, the mirror can't flip up.

Is this a common problem with this lens and camera combo? Or is this an oddball? Is there a fix for it? I'm very excited about this lens and I'm not ready to believe I won't be able to use it!

Yeah, I figured it was going to be very grainy, but I think it works in this one. It didn't work so well in others. Still, for film that had been loaded in a camera for more than 20 years, it's not so bad! :)

The pictures in my original message don't seem to be showing anymore. Let me try a different way.

Here's the picture with the Spotmatic and expired Tri-X:

Thanks for the welcomes!

Ah yes, I remember those 110 cameras well. I'd bet that if I dug around my mother's house, one would turn up (she's not so good about getting rid of stuff!) I hear that 110 film is being made again, though it's hard to imagine why anyone would want to shoot it. But maybe that's just me :)

Yeah, I'm a bit of a dinosaur with my gear! I love the old stuff, though, both the heft of those metal bodies and the timeless sort of images they take. As for the Spotmatic, we tried taking the plate off. Might try it again, but that thing was well and truly attached. But I'm not too worried about it. I've got a little light meter chart and I even downloaded a light meter app for my phone (I know - I was supposed to be a dinosaur, right? ;) ) and I use that in tricky lighting situations, but for the most part, I've done well with my own settings and a little bit of bracketing.

Ah, he knew that about me going in so he can't complain ;)

Hello everyone.

Technically, my first camera was a Vivitar point and shoot. I can't even remember the model number. It was a piece of junk and I struggled to take good pictures with it all through college. Okay, part of it was me not knowing what I was doing yet, but I do remember clearly that I was trying to do things that were beyond the capabilities of the camera.

I finished college and rewarded myself with a K1000 and a Takamur 28-80mm f3.5 zoom lens. I did have a flash at some point but it broke and I never bothered replacing it since I have decided that I don't like flash photography.

That K1000 has been with me for 20 years and continues to be my go-to camera when I need something that I know, that feels good and right in my hands, and will not let me down. I've since gotten a more lenses, including my favorite one: an Asahi 50mm f1.7.

Very recently, my brother-in-law handed me his kit of a Honewell Pentax Spotmatic with a few lenses, including (if I remember correctly) a 28mm, a 90mm, and a 135mm. I've only taken that out on one test run so far. It had been sitting in a box for probably 20+ years and still even had film in it. The battery is solidly stuck and so there's no light meter, which is fine since I'm trusting my Sunny 16 skills more and more these days. It's holding up pretty well. So did the long-expired Tri-X that it was loaded with.

I have other film cameras (Zorki 6, Olympus 35RC, Lubitel 166B, Mamiya 645 Pro TL, Polaroid Land Camera Automatic 100) and I do own a digital camera (Canon SX130). The Canon digitals seem to be pretty good, but after finding this forum and poking around a bit, I am remembering that Pentax was my first love so I think I'll decided to stick to Pentax if or when I ever decide to get a DSLR.
