The elephant in the room= sensor design, production implementation, etc., which is a big expense and requires a huge financial commitment according to those in the know. Does it make sense to keep using the pretty old, Sony 36mpix on a new camera model - maybe, but does it make dollars and sense? Since Pentax seemed to use the same or similar sensor as Nikon used on the D810, maybe Pentax/Ricoh should acquire the new 45mpix sensor that Nikon uses in the D850 from whomever in numbers that make it viable - that would be great. How many would buy a K1 mk.3, and at what price are the questions that must be asked as well as what additional features/upgrades to entice buyers? Features I would like to see: 45mpix or more, better/faster autofocus especially in LV mode, lighter weight, some decent video capability, higher-rez rear screen and bigger/brighter finder ala K3mk.3, same or better, more movable rear screen.

Me too! ---------- Post added 03-31-23 at 11:42 AM ----------
Certainly would appreciate additional features like a higher res back screen, faster frame rates, focus shift in-camera, higher res sensor, etc., but that is why I call for a new model as a K3IIIs or Special Edition instead a full-on K3mk.IV. Maybe a KPmk.2 makes more sense, but I personally do not like the small form factor due to large hands which keeps the battery grip on my KP at all times, so that my pinkie finger is not off the bottom. Anyway, as Fuji has shown us, there are many ways to slice and dice the same sensor on several different aps-c models and MF cameras.

As Thom Hogan often points out - and he seems to know more about manufacturing than most , camera manufacturers have to make a pretty sizable and expensive commitment when it comes to deploying a new sensor, so I think there would be plenty of room for minimalist, or non-video new KP you desire. On the other hand, there could also be room for a K3IIIs, K3IV or special edition with all the features I am seeking, on top of the current K3mk.III and a new KPII. Sadly, because of the sensor order issue - if Hogan is correct, we have assume to believe that a K1mk.3 will probably never see the light of the day as a low-volumn camera...

I have a difficult time imagining being able to choose a focus point on the back screen while the K3mk.3 is either high above or close to the ground without a movable screen, but maybe I need to try this out with a camera in hand?

To Fozzfoster:
Besides fumbling with a tripod, the last thing I feel like doing is adjusting my camera's composition and perspective with a smartphone. Frankly, pulling out a smartphone while also using a camera takes away from the entire photography experience for me, unless I am only using a camera phone in the first place. Simply too many gadgets to jugle. You make a valid point about buffer capacity, although I shoot and mainly use raw with a large jpegs as a backup and I do not like to have to think about any limitations while chasing wildlife.

I have seen Pentax/Ricoh is pretty good about creating special editions of their various cameras. I love the quality and lack of noise of the K3III sensor, which is probably state of the art for asp-c. So, I thought I would put it out there, what would get me to add a K3III as my main camera to my collection of a KP, K5IIs, and one K10 and too many Pentax mount lenses to list: A K3IIIs or K3III special edition with the following few changes/additions:
a. KP or K1 flippy/movable screen. b. A deeper buffer to match or exceed that of a Nikon D500. (Note, years ago I promised myself, because I often shoot near the ground and also do macro photography, I would never buy another camera without a some kind of movable screen and I have stayed true to that commitment)
Of course, I would love improved autofocus and some additional features - improved live view focus, in-camera focus stacking, video focus, etc., but those first two items would easily do it for me and put me over the edge. To me, special editions or a K3IIIs should have more than a fancy finish upgrade. I am sure, I am seriously underestimating the amount of engineering and parts/tech changes that such a camera would require, but dreams are free!
What wants and dreams do others have for a top-of-the-line Pentax aps-c cameras?

I had the same problem about two years ago and also bought a broken, solenoid donor body. Put the word out here on forum - nationally, but got no takers. Have big, shaky hands to boot...
Good luck in any case and let me know, if you have any success.

This is one of the best contest ourcomes ever on Pentax Forums that I have seen. So many great images to choose from, there should be at least three prizes. While some complain about image manipulation, I would argue several images could be much better if shadows and/or blacks would be lifted to reveal or display more detail...

Shutters will necessarily fail - just a matter of time. Th e KP is rated at 100K actuations which is midlevel and not more. They can certainly fail before and after that time, depending on usage, storage, and luck of the draw...

You are lucky with your K50. I had a K30 that was somewhat less than five years old, but with only 9900 shutter actuations before it developed the dreaded aperture/solenoid issue.

As someone who bought a KP earlier this year with less than 500 actuations, only to develop a shutter problem after a few hundred shots and about two months of use (intermittant double and overexposure), I can easily sympathize with your situation. To determine a mechanical shutter issue, try a reset and then try the ES setting - electronic shutter setting, and see if this solves the situation. Doing this, as well as a firmware update and camera reset, helped me to determine if it was a mechanical shutter issue - which it was since the ES setting allowed the camera to work flawlessly. Should you decide to have the mechanical shutter fixed- I could never find out what the cost might be low end and all the way to an actual shutter replacement at Precision Camera (the only game in town at this time). However, your situation sounds less troublesome than mine unless, of course, it gets worse. In any case, good luck. I assume that more and more KP owners will start having shutter problems as the cameras age and it would be good to get some detailed information on cost and parts availability for a worst case scenerio - a complete shutter replacement, since Precision would not give me this, and only quoted me some generic - read mysterious - figure of $473 dollars, which included expensive shipping back to the west coast, yet also before they even let me tell them what the actual problem with my mint condition, used KP actually was...

As long as they outsource to more than one repair place, I would be happy! ---------- Post added 07-08-22 at 02:45 PM ----------
Good to know. This will certainly influence my decision to buy used again in the future on newer electronic equipment, unless there is a reputable warrantly behind the item. Of course, I have fond memories of Pentax's extended, three year warranty for peanuts at the time of acquisition...
