I was at a beach during my son's birthday and I saw this thought it has potential. This was taken with Pentax 21mm f3.2.

Not quite. All those EF lenses are autofocus. All worked normally (except the MPE65 macro which is unique, the TSE lenses ( only 3 of them ) which are by nature needs to be manual focus ) on all the EOS bodies except for EFS lenses.

Those L, IS, and USM are canon terminogy : L for pro level ( in pentax term is * ), IS is image stablization, USM are ultrasonic motors ( ie SDM for pentax ). DC, DG, EX are Sigma terms for their lenses ( DC=digital body only, DG = digital enhanced coating, EX - pro version of Sigma lenses ).

Here in Pentax alone you have all the way from manual focus, to autofocus, to certain type that works in certain mode etc. certainly a lot more variation.

Phew! Sure very complicated compared to the Canon line - in which case just EF or EFS line. Nothing else fits without adapters!

I am in the Pentax world for about a week and I am totally confused about the pentax lenses available. I know the FA and DA series ( being the film-based autofocus and digital autofocus), but what about the F, A, M, F DA and many other series?? I know about the K, which is the grand daddy of all the bayonet Pentax lenses, but that's about all! I am in the Canon world where the only thing that is useable ( without adapters ) is the EF lenses - simple and straightforward!

Thanks,
tipsy

Thank you for your comments. I like the crop, only that it will resulted in very few pixels left for printing!

Maybe I should go back to the same place and take a vertical view also....

Thanks

This is the first Pentax Picture I am posting here - Rock&Sea.
The view is that from the shores near the Penang bridge ( which you can see is near the top at the horizon ).

Picture taken with the 18-55 kit lens on Pentax K100D super.

Please take a look and comment.

Thanks

I am a Canon shooter who have just started a Pentax kit with the kit lens + 40mm limited.

Canon has a very large system for its DSLR. Any option you want - it's available.

1. Generally their consumer level lenses quality is average and poor in built - witness its kit lens - a plastic looking toy with a moving filter ring.

2. Their choice of consumer level prime lens are poor in build and are not updated at all. ie the 24mm, 35mm, 50 f1.8 II are poor to average in build quality with useless focusing ring. Their 28mm f1.8 is rather weak in performance. The short telephotos are incredibly good and sharp though ( ie the 85 f1.8 and 100 f2, 135 f2 ).

3. Their quality primes are very large and very expensive, ie the 24mm 1.4L, 35mm 1.4L etc. all with 72mm filters. I noticed that Pentax 31mm f1.8 is rather expensive also, but are relatively small compared to Canon.

4. Their L quality telephoto zooms are very expensive but very high in quality ( eg the 70-200mm f4L IS is excellent but cost about USD 1K. )

Generally, if you are a sport shooter, a bird photographer, Canon will be a better choice than Pentax due to availability of super long telephotos ( 300, 400, 500,600,800, 1200!), BUT these are very expensive lenses typically not used by normal home uses. For ultra wide, Nikon is known to have better lenses than Canon - not too sure about Pentax which only have the 12-24mm and the 14mm DA lenses (not counting the Pentax 11-17 fisheye which produces distorted pictures ).

However, a general user for travel, family will be satisfied with Pentax, with small quality lenses, especially primes.

I bought my Pentax K100D super based on the size of the system, and I have now the kit lens ( comes with the SLR ) + a 40mm f2.8 pancake. I intend to obtain the 21mm pancake and later the 70mm pancake, mainly for travel. In time, I might get the Pentax 12-24, or the Sigma 10-20 for landscape use. See my gallery for some of Canon's pictures taken with the Canon 10-22 ultrawide.

I do not intend to use the Pentax to replace the Canon gear, which have better sports capability ( 5 frames/sec vs 3 frame/sec ) plus a bigger memory buffer. The Canon Dslr is also much larger than the Pentax K100D, though about the same size as the K10D which is why I am choosing the K100D ( why not K200D? - well, it is substantially more expensive and bigger mp which means bigger files ).

Tipsy.

Hi,

I have uploaded some introductory photos, unfortunately all taken with my Canon camera ( currently 30D ) and many of them with the Canon 10-22. It's one incredible lens - I hope Pentax will have similar without the horrible price. Hope you enjoy the photos!

Pentax raw software and Mac Leopard

Pentax has sent me an email regarding the latest raw converter software.

"Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for contacting Pentax.

A new PHOTO Laboratory and PHOTO Browser 3.50 Installer has been posted on our Web site that fixes the Macintosh install problem. If you choose not to download the installer (it is approx. 85 MB) and has OSX Leopard (ver. 10.5 – 10.5.2) you can install the Browser and Laboratory software by clicking on one of the East Asian install languages instead of English. It will then install a version of the software based on their operating system language (if they have an English-language OS it will install an English-language version of PHOTO Laboratory and Browser). We put a screen shot on the Web site to show you which language-button to click on.

If you are in need of further assistance, please respond to this email or call our technical support center at 800-877-0155.

Sincerely,
Randall Schumacher
Pentax Imaging Technical Support"

Too bad it doesn't show me the link to their latest and greatest version 3.50!

Well...I hope not! The main issues with Pentax is the lack of long lenses. However as for the Dark Side, I don't really think so. For Canon - the "Dark Side" is Nikon since they compete on similar market. Pentax niche is small nice primes. At this point I am not going to buy big long lenses for Pentax - Just 2 or 3 small primes for general use. I am going to miss ultrawide lenses - the offering is Canon's 10-22 lens which I would say is incredibly good - and I obtained many fantastic photos with it.

I would maybe say Pentax as the "Yellow Side" - bright and cheerful?

I own quite a bit of photogear - a Canon 30D, 35 f2, 100 f2, 70-200 f4L, 18-55 IS and a 17-40 f4L, 10-22 f3.5-4.5

What am I doing here? Well I just bought a Pentax K100 Super + kit lens + 40mm f2.8 limited for travel use. While the Canon gear is not exactly heavy, it is definitely bulky for travel purpose. Yes I can just bring the 18-55 kit lens and a 35 f2 for this purpose, which is fairly small, but the 30D is rather a big SLR and I'll rather not buy the Canon 400D for this purpose. I am interested in getting several of the limited Pentax pancake lens for general use and small in size relative to the Canon series lens. So here I am joining here for more info on Pentax gear.
Specifically, I am thinking of the Pentax 21mm + 40mm + 70mm for this purpose. Not too interested in duplicating what I have in my Canon, since that will defeat the reason why I am getting the Pentax - small and convenient kit. I must say I like the kit lens - so solidly built compared to the cheap looking Canon kit lens. I am also going to sell of the 17-40L since I don't really use it that much.

The canon is great when you want to take action photos ( at 5 frame/sec! ) with the ultra silent USM with the 70-200 zoom, but it is rather large to take on holiday.
