What nice stories!

My first camera was a blue Kodak 110 film with a Mickey Mouse design. I received it as a gift from my parents since I always took my mum's camera [also 110 film]. I was about 5 years old then. I wish I still had that camera!!

Nice pictures! The second seems to be black and white but there's some purple/magenta tinge here and there.. was it shot at very high ISO?
Anyway, I think she's going for a compact, so adapter and lenses are not a concern anymore hehe.

Edit: Duh, never mind, there's the Show Exif button. ISO 3200 and there's also green in the grass, so yeah, it's not actually B&W like the other =]

Yeah, I'm doing exactly that! :D a big camera and a small one. The one with the smaller sensor is still quite good, let's see if she prefers an OVF or a screen.. and now that I think about it, I'll have to take the Canon, not the Pentax.. yikes! The smaller camera has great IQ for a compact anyway, so it'll be fine.
The difference between shooting and not shooting could also be decided by rain.. and the compact loses. I've been there, it's so sad haha.

Pppsssttt.. I think I'm going for a premium compact, even with a smaller sensor -almost sure of it, but first I'm going to take my mom taking some pictures this weekend, see what type of camera she prefers =]

Hi Fcsnt! Thank you for the kind suggestion, I've always been curious of Sony cameras, but I don't think I'll go there for two reasons, first, maybe it won't be a dSLR after all [we'll see this weekend] and second, I couldn't lend her any lenses, so if it were a dSLR, it should be Pentax or Canon. Do you have any posted pictures, taken with your Sony?

Hi Nav. Oh, well I know what you mean with the WR being too much, but I don't mean she'll be out in a tropical storm, but simply if it's very very humid or light rain, that's enough to put any electronic away. My mum goes to a butterfly sanctuary, the zoo [and it's not a zoo like you'd think a zoo is, like a city for animals, it's more like a ranch], and sometimes even the rain forest, nothing too extreme hehe but again, the WR is just so that she can feel comfortable using the camera anytime =]
I'm glad it makes you feel that way, maybe you do something similar hehe. Yeah, it's a bit expensive but now I can afford something like this and she deserves that and more. After all, she's my mom. [What's LBA?]

snpsht, I think you're right. I don't want her to feel that way, and actually use the camera that I get her, whatever that is. I'll try getting more from her letting her use my cameras or asking my sister to ask her something. And she doesn't have an iPhone [Android] but that's also a very good idea! Let's see what intel we can get out of her =]

Oww.. it's too bad he didn't use it after all. I guess everybody does that with different things, too bad cameras are expensive. My brother wanted soooo bad a certain game too, so I bought it for him, and it's there collecting dust hehe. Oh well.. like I mentioned, I'll ask her indirectly and see if she shows interest in a dSLR, see what happens next.

It's weather sealed?? That sounds good, I'll take a look. I'll also take a look at the Pentax WG cameras [although I'm not very sure about the IQ].

Another option in the list, thanks =]

That's great to know, thanks for sharing! That Sony sounds great, I guess better than my Oly. I'm thinking of replacing it with a Panasonic LX100 but I need to save more hehe.

I definitely get what you say, it's been happening to myself; I use my XZ-2 more often than any of my bigger cameras.
And it's a good idea!! I'll let her use my cameras and see her reaction with each type =D

Hehe I think I fully understand you because I went through something very similar, starting in Canon with a T3i, built a small lens collection, and then "switched" to Pentax with my beloved K-01 and slowly began collecting lenses, and I say it like that because I still have my Canon gear.. totally with you on the cheap feel compared to Pentax. I'm now about to get a K-S2 because I need a WR body and will get the K-1 but until next year I think.

Thanks Kath, +1 for the Sony. I'll be checking out the prices when I get home.
Oh and the case looks fantastic, I'll convince someone hehe.

You're totally right, and this is why I'm asking here instead of just buying something I'd want for myself. I already know my path and I'm slowly but surely building my own system. I am using what I know about photography and about my mother to find something suitable =]
Hey, I had not seen the RX100 MkII, doofus me only looked at the MkIV and instantly dismissed it. I'll have it in the list now, thanks!

I've tried Fuji, Nikon, Canon and Pentax superzooms and.. I mean they're okay, but just that, and it's not like they are very cheap, so I'd rather see something else.

Aaah the small Canon.. I have a T3i that I still use from time to time, is the SL1 as good/better? I've only held it once at a store. What I would argue on a K-50 is the WR only, but for all other purposes, the SL1 would also make a good choice.

Yeah, swapping lenses could be bothersome for her at first, especially larger ones. If I don't go the WR way, maybe a Tamron/Sigma superzoom could work. I'll check prices. Thanks!

Hi jatrax,
Her photographic experience is little. She used to have a film compact camera many years ago, now she uses her phone and that's it. I thought of going for a premium compact but then I though, "what if she likes it and wants more flexibility?". I have an Olympus XZ-2 that I shoot with every day and love to bits, but I can't mount a 300mm lens for butterflies. The macro is formidable but I gotta be reeeeeeeally close. I considered a Fuji XQ2 or X30.

The Sony is disqualified due to cost, and superzooms due to IQ. Which yes, that's me yapping about it, not her but I can't help it. I've been asked over a dozen times "hey, I got this semi-pro camera, but it's blurry/slow/whatever" and it turns out to be a superzoom. I now know all brands menus, that's the good side xD But seriously, I'm not getting her into that. The GR has a fixed lens so no good.

She has a small laptop and would be shooting JPEGs, but I think she'll be happy to learn how to use her camera once she sees what she can do with it. At first she'll be in full auto, no doubt hehe.

Hi Alex,
Well, she has no idea I'm getting her a camera, so I can't ask. But I know she'll use it for family reunions and social gatherings, and most importantly, to capture nature. Haha yes, full auto is how she'll use it at first and JPEGs, but I do think that in time she'll want to learn more. She's actually working with the local zoo in a project for observing and preservation of the monarch butterfly. This is why I want to surprise her with a camera.
I agree with the lighter setup, which makes me think of micro4/3. The Panasonic GM1 would be a good option too, but there's no weather sealing [vs the K-50]. I considered the Q and then though of the GM1. The Q is one of my favourites, but I'm afraid that it will get discontinued [and thus, the lenses].

And you had to be called just that, eh? That's a good choice too, but a tad more expensive than what I was considering.. if I could afford it [$300 body + ~$450 lens], I guess this would be the best option. Single lens and a WR system, but really out of my budget.

Hi TERROR,
Like I was telling to the VoiceofReason, the 18-135 is out of my budget. And a superzoom is a no-no for me, if it was a compact, then it would be a premium compact, not a superzoom. I do think she'll enjoy a good camera, even a dSLR =]

---------- Post added 03-07-16 at 12:22 PM ----------

Oh, well, she does not have much interest yet, I just know she will. She shoots with her phone only, but if I surprise her with a camera, I know she'll want to use it and learn how to use it properly after some time once she gets used to it =]

Hello guys, I'd like your opinion and suggestions. I'm not a newbie, but the person I'm going to gift a camera is. It's my mum. I first thought of a K-50 and a 18-55+50-200mm WR, but I'm afraid she might be intimidated. She likes nature so I want her to have a WR system.. not compulsory though.

Would you rather go that route, or maybe with a micro4/3 like a PEN E-PL6? Both options would be ~$400 and althoug I know the K is superior, I also want her to actually use it, and a smaller camera would be more friendly I think.. what say you, any experiences similar or suggestions? I'm open to anything =]

Rokinon 85mm f1.4 - Wrong aperture?

I see, nice setup. I'm saving for some glass too, and a second body -either a K-S2 in the meanwhile, and later on a K-3 II, or directly the K-3 II. Not sure.
Regarding lenses, yup, the Rokinons are BIG. That's why I got the Pentax 35mm f/2.4, and I am considering the 21 Limited. I'm not much of a zoom guy, but the 18-135 or 16-85mm will be in my arsenal as well. The idea of switching to Pentax [from Canon] was the WR, and so far none of my lenses or cameras are WR haha. But I already got a nice collection and am [quite almost] ready to get that second body and one WR lens.

During my trip I had a backpack with both Rokinons [the 8mm, the 85mm], and the 35mm, It went alright I think =] But like you say, switching them is quite an endeavour while hiking, walking, etc.. in a studio it wouldn't be a problem, but in action.. damn hehe.

The 8mm seemed to be the least sharp of the three, and I shot pretty much always at f/8. Maybe I still have to learn how to use it properly, it's my first fisheye.

What interesting photos! Seems like the dogs were having fun too =]
I had my green button set to something other than P-line, so that didn't work for me either, but how cool it did work out for you.
The 85mm is a beast, love the lens, but damn it's hard to focus at f/1.4 haha. Lucky me, my only Pentax camera is my K-01, and manual focusing is a breeze [against an OVF] with peaking.

I still haven't developed all my RAWs, I took 1,038 and when I finish they will be ~800.. When I finish I'll share if anyone's interested!

There is one insulated contact, but it's either #5 or #3, depending where you start counting.. I don't know which is the locking pin.
There's a group of four, then one, then two.. would a picture be better?

Oh yeah, manual focus is a bit hard but I got the hang of it, even wide open. Peaking helps a lot!

When I get into A mode it stays at f/1.4, yet it says f/2.8. EXIF data says 2.8 as well.
I'm getting.. good exposures, just inaccurate. For instance I simply shot wide open all night in Av mode. All was cool. But in daylight I couldn't be bothered with that nonsense and switched to my 35mm f/2.4 and the fisheye.

The 2.4 gets to 2.4, I guess I can try my Vivitar 50mm 1.7, but it's a completely manual lens.
I'll try cleaning the contacts again =[ I seriously doubt there's dirt, I take too much care but let's hope so..

Yup, the 40 XS and 35mm 2.4 work flawlessly.
It's definitely the lens.. warping sounds unlikely but I'll check for that too.

I'll check for the spring too, thanks!

---------- Post added 12-04-15 at 01:05 AM ----------

Update: I cleaned them and it went past the 2.8, all the way to f/1.4. I don't believe it..
I still can't make the aperture ring work manually, though.

Rokinon 85mm f1.4 - Wrong aperture?

I hope this is the right subforum..

I got my Rokinon 85mm a few months ago and this is the third time I've used it, I went on vacation and used it extensively. But this time it did something it hadn't done before, the maximum aperture I could select in A mode was [still is] f/2.8. The minimum aperture is f/45 I think, maybe 75. Of course this is nuts, so something is wrong. I worked around that in my trip by shooting wide open by either being on f2.8, or going off A mode. The bad thing of using the aperture ring is that the blades don't follow, so it's always wide open. Actually, it doesn't stop down even if I shoot, the only way it will stop down is in A mode, and I don't know what stop I'm getting to because the numbers are off!

:long_sigh:

Of course this is a bit frustrating, and there wasn't much I could do while travelling. Now I've read a little and cleaned the terminals but everything is still the same. No other lens that I have exhibits this behaviour, except my other Rokinon, the 8mm 3.5. It shows the correct aperture, but only stops down in A mode. Manual aperture ring is useless [or simply wide open all the time].

I'm using my beloved K-01 PandaTrooper, any ideas?

PS. I can't wait to finish developing my photos.. they are around 1,000 and it was such an awesome place and every step I took was a photo waiting to be taken.. once I'm done I'll post some!!

Help on deciding for lenses, please?

Well, I missed the chance to get either of those lenses at the moment since I bought my sister a graduation present, so on the bright side that means I have some more time to think haha. I'd go for the 16-85 only because of the WR.. constant 2.8 is constant 2.8 in the Sigma. In my opinion, the 18-135 Is to have a single lens with all focal lengths and WR [you wouldn't change a lens in the middle of rain, would you?].

I can't get the 15 Limited before getting a zoom workhorse =[ So to me, the question is how do both lenses fare against each other, and I mean the Sigma vs the Pentax 16-85mm, and is the constant f2.8 significant or not?

I already checked out the reviews and turns out you're right. Its strengths are the UWA view at 16mm and the good sharpness across the range, and one reviewer said exactly what I am afraid about, that when shooting in low light the ISO will have to go up. Still, if all goes well, I'm planning on using this lens with my K-01 which handles noise decently, and when I'm able to, my upcoming K-5 IIs or even a K-3, so I could worry a bit less about the noise.

In conclusion, I think the 16-85mm wins over the 18-135mm. With the 18-135mm out of the game, it's going against the 17-70 from Sigma. Even at a discount, it's almost $200 more expensive. That only means more time to save up, but what I'm more concerned about is, will it be worth it? Would I miss the constant f2.8? Maybe not if I get the 55mm 1.4, to cover normal-short tele territory with fast bokehliciousness for portraits, since my current 85mm 1.4 feels a bit long, and to be honest, manual focusing on a razor-thin DOF on moving subjects *is* kinda hard haha.

Nope, no one had until you brought it out, and to be honest, I didn't know that lens, thanks!!

Hmmm.. well that's.. interesting. What bugs me is the relatively slow aperture and the high price tag [~$640]. The WR makes up for it a little bit, but with the 18-135mm at less than half the price [~$300], it's questionable in my opinion.

I like its ultra-wideness though. Looks like I need to consider this one too, although at this point, I don't think I'd brush off the 18-135mm just because of the extra reach.. what do you think? Samples anyone?

Edit:
This would actually replace the Sigma/Tamron 17-50mm f2.8, not the 18-135. That being the case, it's weather sealing/longer reach vs fast aperture. This just got more interesting.

Holy guacamole, what beautiful pictures! Thanks for sharing them! Shooting in the rain is something I have always dreamed of, and the very reason I switched to Pentax. But before getting a WR body, I needed to make the switch from Canon... which is kinda untrue, since I kept all my Canon gear. Therefore, I got my K-01 and began wandering in Pentax terrain. Now I can afford more lenses and the WR body is next. Thanks to your post, I now know that the 18-135mm is the 2rd lens I'll get after the Sigma 17-50mm, and only because my current camera is not sealed, so there wouldn't be much of a case. Afterwards, the 55-300 WR. And yes, the 20-40mm is quite steep for me at the moment hehe.

Many thanks for the insight between the Tamron and Sigma 17-50s. I guess I'm going for the Sigma! That should cover my lack of wide-angledness and AF.

Nice list. I'm interested in some of those lenses too, like the 50mm 1.2, but that will have to come later. I don't really use filters much, other than an ND or CPL here and there, so ring size isn't much of a concern to me. Since it is for you, I suggest using step-up/down adapters, that's cheaper than buying filters in all sizes.

I wouldn't sell the 40mm because I like its compactness and how it pairs perfectly with my K-01. With this talk I'm now more inclined to that Sigma 17-50 and the 18-135, which I know some of the range is covered with the Sigma, but that would be particularly for WR.

The macros, yeah, I want the Venus because the mag ratio is 2:1!! That's quite the feat, considering it's also a good portrait lens.
I've not seen many photos taken with the Opteka, but I'm aware it's not going to give me the best image quality.. it is a cheap lens. I want it because 500mm,
And the fisheye, for astro shots and other artistic shots I want to take. I already have some ideas and can't shoot them!! But of course, I need money so I'll have to wait and go one lens at a time

Thanks. I'll look for more comparisons between the two =]

I thought it was more expensive :O I remember there was a macro difference somewhere.. or one is constant 2.8? I guess I'll read more haha.

I do want WR but that could be covered with other lenses, like the 18-135mm or the DA* when I can afford it.

Hahaha no joke!
I've never heard/read of the Sigma 24-60. Seems kind of limited and by the focal length span I'm thinking it's designed for full frame cameras, no? I'll take a look. The 50-500mm sounds.. like it's quite big haha so I'll pass on that one =P The 500mm I currently want is appealing to me because it's a mirror lens, so it's quite small.

I have 3, unless non-K mount lenses are considered cheating:

Vivitar 50mm f/1.7 [my only K-mount 50, thus, my favourite in the Pentax realm of my gear]
Canon EF II 50mm f/1.8 [my favourite of my two Canon 50s and I like it more than the Vivitar]
Canon FD 50mm f/1.8 [unlike my FD 28mm lens, this one isn't very good]

I want:
Pentax DA* 55mm f/1.4 and Pentax's version of the nifty-fifty simply because I must have a 50mm in K mount, and if I'll be getting the DA* there's no point in getting the FA 50. Or that's what I think.

So you agree with the 18-135mm. That's reassuring =] I should still be able to get away with some portraits at the tele end, right?

Hmm the DA21 I had not considered because it's a bit slow and not WR, so I don't like its $500 price tag. Anyway, I'll play with the idea a bit more and search for photos taken with this lens =]

The 70mm fares better at f/2.4 though.
