Sigma 17-50 focus problem

Maybe I'll check that out - thanks for the advice. I'm not really sure why that didn't occur to me, but it didn't. I bought mine when they were $650 in the US and I picked it up for $500 from Japan but without a warranty. I rolled the dice - if the repair is $150 or less I guess I'm no worse off, lol. I'll update once I resolve it. Thanks again!

Sigma 17-50 focus problem

I've been using a Sigma 17-50 very happily for a few years now. Recently I have noticed that it will stop autofocusing in the middle of shooting. It is sporadic - frequently it starts off a shoot normally and then quits doing its job. I originally thought it was an issue with the used K3 I'm using since the camera has some other oddities (like the DOF preview releases the shutter). However, I tried the lens on my K5ii and it exhibited the same problem. Other lenses do not do this on the K3, so pretty definitively it's the lens. I tried cleaning the contacts with no improvement. Doing a search I didn't find others with this problem. I was curious if anyone else has run into this, if there was a solution, and if not I thought it would be good to at least have my experience here in the forums for anyone else who runs into it. Thanks in advance.

K3 shutter won't release with DBG-5 grip

I'll try cleaning the contacts and spinning the dials. The grip is definitely on and functional in every way except for releasing the shutter. I'll update on my success or failure.

Cleaning the contacts didn't do anything, they were clean to begin with. I did notice that one pin is extremely short though - wondering if it could somehow be broken and not making contact. Here's the kicker though - when I rotated dials and messed with everything I could to see if it would cause it to start working again - I engaged the DOF preview and it took a picture! I tried numerous more times to make sure I wasn't imagining it, and I was not. Rotating the lever for the DOF preview releases the shutter, but pressing the shutter release does not. This doesn't seem like a good thing, lol. Has anyone else had stuck pins before, and is there a reasonable fix? I didn't want to tear open the grip if it was a nightmare once you get in there. Thanks again!

For some reason the shutter release won't work on the grip on my K3. The release on the body itself is fine. Half press on the grip will focus, it just won't take a picture when I depress it all the way. Am I missing some setting somewhere, or is this mysterious to others as well. It worked fine when I got it used a few months ago - barely used before. (It is a genuine Pentax grip.) Thanks in advance for any insight.

K3 af fine tune question

I'll have to check stopped down a little. I never use it wide open anyway because it's soft and hazy at 2.8, but at 3.2 it's a completely different lens. The glowy haze disappears and it's pretty darn sharp. I guess I should check focus at 3.2 and see if the adjustment is still as severe - that never occurred to me. I can confirm my copy of the lens does not work in live view, but fortunately I never use live view, so not a problem.

Trying to dial in a Tamron 70-200 with front focusing on a used K3 I recently purchased, and I'm surprised to find that every adjustment I made seemed to have no effect at all. Same amount of front focus from 0 to -10. Am I missing something?

---------- Post added 01-19-17 at 12:27 AM ----------

Nevermind - just saw another thread with the same issue. I was unaware that you have to manually defocus the lens instead of just pointing it away for a quick defocus and then pointing it back at your target. I'm not sure I understand why, but as long as it works I guess I don't need to understand, lol. Got it to work, but had to go all the way to -10.

Props. I love this lens. Switched from the M f1.4 because my manual focusing skills in the viewfinder were not exactly as precise as I had hoped. That is the only other lens I have taken pictures with that I like equally as much as this one. This is a no-braine.

Your exposure mode preference for P-TTL flash?

You are about to be seriously disappointed if you're looking for a war, lol. I simply stated what didn't work for me and what does. A different flash might give different results than mine which is why I said "with the setup I'm using." Seriously though, you've taken flash pictures and left people shaking and scared? The OP didn't mention PTSD dances as one of the possible events, lmao.

I've never seen an old lady drop dead because a flash went off. Shoot away. I was always annoyed by the amount of variation that there would be between shots when shooting in any type of priority mode. I switched to M - ISO 800, f4.0, 1/125s and they were much better. The final step was taking the flash out of p-ttl and using manual for that too. Takes a little experimenting to dial it in, but once you do your shots are much more consistent when you're taking the majority from roughly the same distance. If you wind up much closer or further away, adjust the flash strength accordingly. Manual is not madness, it is the key to consistent results (for me anyway, with the setup I'm using).

Welp, I just wanted to check back in and state for the record that I received the Tamron 70-200 today. I really wrestled with the idea of the 60-250, but the extra speed of the lens for indoor events won out over the additional reach. I already have a 1.4x tamron telecoverter for when I need a little more reach and that will put me at the same maximum aperture anyway - though admittedly probably at lower image quality with the TC attached than the Pentax lens. The relatively affordable full frame body that has just become a reality has played a part in the decision as well. It might take me a while, but I WILL have one. I must. I took just a handful of test shots in my dimly lit living room and dining room tonight but already can see the image quality of this lens is excellent. I already understand the complaints regarding the focusing ring, but very livable. I've got a St. Patrick's Day parade this Sunday that I can't wait to take it out for a real test drive on! Thanks again to everyone for all the advice and information - it is greatly appreciated. (btw - I wound up getting from Amazon - the ebay guy didn't have any listings for the lens now that I finally had the funds in hand. I feel a little more comfortable with a US warranty anyway (at least that what I'm telling myself since the lens cost an additional $170, lol))

Why is the 50mm Lens So Popular on APS-C?

I use my F 50 1.7 mostly for portraits. The results are stunning, and the working distance from subject is great. Not too close, not too far. It's a bit long as a normal, but fortunately the DA 35 2.4 serves well in that capacity and can also be had for a song.

Okay kids, no bickering, lol. I'm sure I could make any of the possible choices work, and appreciate everyone here sharing how they found a way to achieve the results they were looking for. The macro went up $50 and I have to wait for the old tax return before buying, so who knows if any of the Tammys will even still be available by then. Just looked at the video for the Pentax 70-200, good lord that is a big hunk of a lens ( and will probably cost a small fortune).

Interesting! I may give that a try. So after pretty much deciding that the Tamron is the way to go, I had the revelation this morning that noisy AF in the school auditorium at concerts and plays will probably not be appreciated, and that I should probably be factoring this in - which I was not. Am I correct that the Tamron is noisy screwdrive and the Pentax is at least relatively quiet?

I shoot raw. It seems like I need to make WB adjustments on 90% of the pictures coming out of the K5ii. I know well the Pentax color you're referring to. I was worried when I bought the Sigma 17-50 that it might be missed, but it takes such great pictures that I find that I actually don't find it lacking. It's a tough call for sure. I was reading about the focus breathing limiting the focal range at shorter distances. That is so bizarre. A comparison I found showed greater magnification from the Tamron at 200 than the Pentax at 250.

Great info. Thanks everyone. I was thinking the macro would also serve as a good general purpose telephoto prime, but uber slow focusing makes it less appealing - for the moment anyway, lol. It appears to be down to the two tele zooms. I'm leaning toward the faster and less expensive Tamron. Anything I'm missing regarding why the Pentax might be a better way to go?

---------- Post added 02-01-16 at 11:03 AM ----------

I considered this lens early on, but it would require a substantially longer "saving period" which then results in a substantially shorter "shooting period". I'm thinking the Tamron is probably the way to go. I can't imagine I'd be disappointed.

Dammit. I thought the 60-250 was over $1k but it's only $60 more than the Tamron. Dammit. Dammit.

Lmao, I should have known that every idea I had bouncing around my head would wind up being suggested. I keep leaning towards whatever the last person said. Yeah, I should finally add the 55-300. Yeah, the macro. Yeah, the 70-200.
