300mm plus Lens Club: discuss your long lenses

chuck_c - we have the same camera (K-3), lens (DA*300) and teleconverter (Pentax 1.4 AF) you used for your Vesper Sparrow and Northern Cardinal pictures. Great by the way. We take bird pictures almost exclusively and we are experiencing a lot of "hunting" with this equipment combo. As you know in taking bird pictures getting quick sharp focus is a must. Have you had any problems with "hunting"? If so do you have suggestions for curing this? BTW - we have almost equal "hunting" issues in handheld as tripod. Also did you have your camera, lens and teleconverter combo calibrated as a set or did you just slap them together and go? Thanks

I have heard that teleconverters often don't support AutoFocus (AF) on Pentax Lens. Can you confirm this teleconverter will support AF on Pentax DA lenses. I have a DA*300 and a DA 50-200 which I use on a K-5.

Is it still available?

Upgrade from K-5 to K-3

My wife and I both own a K-5. We did this so we can share lenses and camera knowledge. Our hobby is go out on weekends and take photos of birds.

We have been contemplating trading-in one of the K-5's on Adorama for a K-3. Obviously adding cash as well.

For bird photography are we going to get a much better picture with the K-3 assuming nothing else changes in our ability or lens complement. What is likely to improve? Better AF and IQ are our hope. The old eyes are 100% dependent on AF so any improvement here would be very helpful.

Or would a better idea just be to get additional longer lenses like a Sigma 150-500mm and a pair of the 1.4 teleconvertors being bandied about recently.

Comments appreciated.

My wife wants to get into Macro photography. She like me is a novice photographer but wants to get a macro lens that will work on her K-5. I have looked at the lenses Pentax makes but not really having any experieince in macro photography I can't really help her with a selection.

Any suggestions?

Assume she is willing to pay up to $700 or so.

Pentax Digital Camera Utility 4

I have been using this software for about 4 months and now it won't come up when I click the Pentax Digital Camera Utility 4 shortcut on my desktop. It gets a runtime error. I removed it using the remove software feature in WinXP and then reinstalled what came on my CD when I bought the camera and then I retrieved the latest version 4.40 from the www site and installed that. It still won't work. I consider myself a savvy user (not an IT guru) of Win Xp but can't get it to work any longer on my home desktop PC. It runs fine on my Laptop on Win 7.

I believe I have sufficient memory and disk space on the PC and am running SP3 on XP as the software says is required.

I also have made sure all the WinXP updates are in place and of course I have re-booted the PC many times.

Every other piece of s/w on my PC runs fine except the Pentax Digital Camera Utility 4.

Any suggestions?

My wife says it is my eyes but I think it is the camera. Anyway if I want to adjust my auto focus what type of object should I shoot to use as the subject for the post adjustment testshots. Something that is complex in texture or something simple? I have three lenses - a DA 18-55mm a DA 50-200mm and a DA* 300mm.

SMC Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED vs SMC Pentax-DA* 300mm F4 ED [IF] SDM

I am considering these two lenses (SMC Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED & SMC Pentax-DA* 300mm F4 ED [IF] SDM) for a K-5 where I want to shoot nature shots at distances from 5M up to 100M. I have read the reviews on both and want to know why the SMC Pentax-DA* 300mm F4 ED [IF] SDM justifies a $900 premium over the SMC Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED. What features and performance supports this premium. Basically I am a casual user and taking pictures for my own enjoyment.

K5 plus Pentax DA 18-135 ED AL IF DC WR

I am going to Peru in a couple of months and want to get a DSLR. So far I have decided on the K-5 body but am now looking at lenses. I would prefer a lens that is multi-purpose. By that I mean something that can be used for shots within a foot to something like a 100 yards and most of the time I will be stable but the images may be moving or stable but sometimes I will be moving (in a canoe on a river for example) and the image may be moving or stable, some shots may be in early dawn or at dusk but most will be in full daylight. I was thinking about having two lenses like the DA 18-55 and then a telephoto/zoom like a 55-300 but from what I have read it appears a Pentax DA 18-135 ED AL IF DC WR may be able to satisfy my needs overall in just one lens and that would be very convenient. I am just looking for hobby capability and mostly for vacation type outdoor photos of things in nature, structures, people, etc. So is the Pentax DA 18-135 a good choice as a one lens solution for my photo needs?
