Ok I would recommend that all levels of photographers get familiar with setting up and being able to quickly manipulate the USER setting on the mode dial. You will find that once you have mastered this that you will not us any preset modes and your images should be better.

Challenging? Ha...I found it more towards the impossible zone. They'd stop at a flower for a millisecond and FLASH gone...

Aw hell no maybe if I had the 20-40 limited on...but I was shooting flowers and these things dart like mofo's. I do no post editing so I'm sure if I was a Photoshopper I could have used some form of hocus pocus. For better or worse what I shoot is what it is

I was taking macro flower pics and a lady commented "there is a hummingbird by your head"; I proceeded to put the camera back into AF.S and my U1 settings (turning off MF) and prayed that I could follow one of these rockets and this slow macro lens. I got one! What do you think?

Abstract Flower in the setting sun

At local park, setting sun, used flash -2 to give flower a little fill in light without blowing it out. I think it's pretty good. What about my fellow Pentaxians?

Pentax DLSR newbie question

I have the K3...I like the on board flash, it makes an excellent subject in the sun fill in, or subject between setting sun fill in...I've just taken some pretty dang nice photos of a flower framed in the setting sun and used the flash at -2 to give it some light but not blown out with a flash at +/- 0. I have a K-30, which was given to my 6 year old when I got the K3, I gave him a 18-55, nothing special optically, but not complete crap, and bought him a DA L 50-200 WR for $100 so he can join daddy when it rains. That lens isn't a home run either but not a ground out. I haven't seen a single Pentax lens that is complete garbage ever. I love my 18-135, and the two plastic fantastic's with hoods are great, I also really enjoy my Tamron 90mm 1:1 macro, very comparable to the 100mm Pentax minus the WR, which I would have bought, but at the time I was shooting a K-x, another good buy at the time and my intro into DSLR's.

Ahhhh the hood...it came bundled with the K-30 and per Pentax tradition...you don't get the hood, I haven't bought it yet either. Thus no damage because I don't have it.

Well I am in the camp of buying one and for the longest time I've screwed them on and never taken them off, that was the K-x, K-30 days; now I have the pleasure of using a K-3 and look for ANY improvement in IQ I can muster, thus I've just started taking them off (wish I had kept all the cases they came in).
I do have one story: I was shooting when a thunderstorm was approaching so I was using my 18-135, unfortunately my widest angle lens and THANKFULLY had the UV filter on. I say this because as I ran in to grab my 35mm prime because the tornado sirens were blaring I put my baby on the washer. The damn washer vibrated the K-3 off and it took a plunge of 4.5' to the tiled floor. The UV filter was smashed. It was a Hoya so I had to literally pry it off my lens. I thought the threads were shot on the lens (they looked mangled) but I bought a cheap Tiffen and unbelievably it screwed on with minimal effort. Happy to report both the lens and the K-3 do not have a single mark on them, and still take outstanding photos. I never gave much thought to the Ricoh on the bottom of the view screen but now I look at it as a well earned badge of honor! Thank you Mag-alloy tank. THANK YOU. The camera was less than two weeks old too. I about had a heart attack!

I hope you know what you're doing...the K-3 II is one hell of a camera and will, in my opinion, humble a novice. I am flipping between choosing the 16-85 and the limited 20-40 in my mind. Already have the 55-300, Tamron 90mm 2.8 macro (great lens, touchy focusing), the 18-135 WR, and the two plastic fantastic's the 35mm and 50mm, I'd recommend those two if you want really good lenses for not much cash. I got a K-x (gathering dust), a K-30 which I gave to my 6 year old son, and a K-3. Very happy with all my cameras...I took it from entry to pro (yes I consider the K3 a PRO camera). Best of luck and welcome aboard matey...

I DO keep that thing practically tied to me. I placed it on the washer because I was running to grab a prime due to tornado sirens and lots of lightning going off in my area. The vibrations of the damn machine sent it on a plunge. All my fault but I almost cried.

The unimaginable happened yesterday...the K3 hit the ground from 4.5 feet onto tiled floor. Besides a shattered 63mm UV filter on my 18-135 there is absolutely no damage at all. A big shout out to Ricoh/Pentax for building tank bodies and lenses. I cannot believe that there is nothing wrong with my less than 2 week old camera. I need to do some extensive field tests to make sure but it seems the Mag-alloy body saved my a$$. Even the 18-135 is relatively free of damage, some of the filter threads may be shot because I had to literally pry it off with a pair of channel locks. I am lucky. I bought a garbage UV filter to see if I can "re-groove" the threads. Thank you for the quality build Ricoh...I never minded the Ricoh label on the bottom of my viewscreen but now I look at it as a badge of pride.

K-50 body under $300 on Amazon brand new. You can apply for a CC card with them and they have good "X" months with 0% interest. I just bought my K-3 through them. That baby is a gem. I also have a K-x, and K-30 (same as K-50). Both are great cameras, but can't beat the WR for the K-30/K-50. Just my two cents.

For what it's worth I'll be getting my K3 delivered tomorrow. I found that I use the flash for subject in the sun fill in more than I would a GPS module. Either camera is supposedly awesome, yet the K3 is hundreds less....

Well thanks for the advice everyone, as of tomorrow I will be shooting with a K-3. I was very tempted to step up to the Mark II for the increased autofocus and one step SR, but couldn't pass up a K-3 for just over $600.00...I am sure I will be doing the happy dance...very excited to see how sharp the missing AA filter is going to be. K-x > K-30 > K-3 I am done with bodies for awhile, I did the classic beginner, enthusiast, pro-sumer moves...Thanks again.

Well Paladin...looks like it's the K3 for me. I too like the fill in flash and don't feel like creating a bulky "hey look at me" camera to lug around. I just don't hope I have my famous buyers remorse that always strikes me. Like I said I am very interested in attempting it with my macro. I am not a Photoshop guy and have no desire to take multiple exposures and blend them into a "pixel shift equivalent". Thanks everyone. I guess I will be pulling the trigger. They still have like 3 of the gunmetal K3's around, maybe I'll get that...nah...just save the cash and get a lens, or some backup batteries.
