FWIW I had a reply from Phil Harvey (the author) on the exiftool forum:
"This really depends on the K3. You could do a series of test shots, but I'm guessing that the conversion will be lens-dependent."
Looks like I have a project ...

Thanks, I'll ask there as well. I did a quick web search and found nothing, so I wondered whether the tag was Pentax specific. ---------- Post added 11-22-2022 at 01:15 PM ----------
I do. 0 is listed as 'very close' and 1 as 'close', 2 - 5 are just numbers then 6 is 'far' and 7 is 'very far'. On a shoot 4 weeks ago I took 55 images and EXIFTOOL reports at least one of every value
I suppose I'm not too fussed about accuracy, it'd just be interesting to have an estimated distance.
And being lazy I thought I'd ask before trying to experiment

Was scanning the exif of a photo recently and noticed a tag called "Focus Range Index" . Looking at other photos gave me values from "0 (very close)" to "7 (very far)".
Does anyone know whether it is possible to convert these values to an approximate distance? No doubt the focal length of the lens is required, happily that is captured as well.
In case it's relevant, I shoot with a pair of K3s, one with a Sigma 17-50mm and the other a 70-200mm.
Thanks
Keith

What a difficult choice! I kept changing my mind but eventually decided #11 for its different perspective.

On my K-3 I have the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8
and on my other K-3 I have the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8
When out and about I usually wear a harness with both cameras attached so have a range of 17 - 200mm (with a tiny gap in the middle) without needing to change lenses. Which was my rationale for buying the second K-3. I never could change a lens quickly and also got fed up cleaning the sensor.

Thanks Bob
Having never developed a film I think I'll pass on the DIY approach :)
Think I'll go with Peak Imaging. After all this time I doubt anything will come out and if it does, I can live with it being B&W (also not too expensive worth a shot)
BTW thanks for that post in the ADDENDA ADDENDA. There was a link to the UK lab in a later reply but the lab is long gone.

Thanks for the suggestion. Looks like a single roll with shipping back to the UK is $45.50. As I'm now retired, that is probably more than I would want to spend considering the age of the film. That said, it still might be worth the gamble.
Thanks again ---------- Post added 06-06-2021 at 12:48 PM ----------
I'd seen that E4 was a fairly nasty process, hence my pessimism.
Will have to contact the company as they make no mention of transparencies, just prints.
Thanks for the link

I suspect I might be asking in vain but ...
... I have just found an old reel of Kodak Ektachrome slide film that I would have shot in 1977 (that was the year I moved to prints).
The problem I have is that E-4 was phased out about the same time. So, does anyone know whether it is still possible to find someone in the UK that could process the reel?
One problem that immediately springs to mind is that, even if it is possible, it will be expensive. And being a 40+ year old reel of exposed film, it is likely that film will have degraded and so result in nothing worth seeing. A costly exercise for nothing?
Ah well, first I have to see if it is even possible to process. Anyone out there have any suggestions?
Thanks
Keith

As I'm 68 years old, I reckon my two K-3s will be the last dSLR cameras that I'll buy. Whilst I daydream of a big full-frame with a fast telephoto lens, as said above "Retirement is tough, money wise". Also, in reality I don't really need one. I'm also thinking that, even though I can currently hold a K-3, plus grip, plus 70-200mm f2.8 quite still, that's likely to change. So no point getting something even heavier!
And in any case, the K-3 does everything I need. Yes, it would be nice to have blisteringly fast AF but I can live without it. Hell's bells, my first SLR was a Praktica LTL that focused only as fast as my hand cold turn the focus ring and my eyes could spot when I got the focus correct.

There is at least one other here that knows who you are talking about! Saw them quite a few times in the early 70s. The only gig I actually remember was in 1972 at Goldsmiths College, London. Also on the bill were the Pink Fairies and ...
... Sweet!!!
Unsurprisingly Sweet got a rough reception. So bad that Brian Connolly mooned the audience at the end of their set. The only other thing I remember about that gig was having to walk out a few minutes after Hawkwind started. In place of "certain substances" I had drunk rather a lot of whisky. Unfortunately, the band had pointed their strobe lights at the audience. A minute or two of that and I had an almighty headache so had to leave :fedup::fedup:
And to bring this post back to Pentax :), here are a few photos of the band the last time I saw them - Hawkwind Oct 2014 | Flickr taken with my old K-5

BINGO! I never knew my nose was that mischievous
Checking the photo info on the K-3 I note that the first shot today was a single exposure. 5 minutes passed before I took the next photo, which was in multi-exposure mode. In all 12 exposures on my camera show they were taken in m-u mode before the power off/on. What made it more confusing is that not all of them were actually double exposures. Had they been so, I hope I might have worked it out for myself. Playing with the camera just now also identified why they weren't all crap. Pressing the Playback button after taking the first of the 2 multiple exposures means the file gets saved with only the one exposure. It still shows as a multi-exposure shot but it isn't.
Many thanks, I was beginning to think that the K-3 was playing up. Now I am retired, I am not sure I could afford the repair, let alone a new camera. :)
Finally, I believe the reason my nose became "active" is that the first shot was a bird in flight. So the camera was following it around. Plenty of opportunity for my snout to play an April fool a day early.
Thanks again

This morning, one of my K-3s decided that it would take double exposures, i.e. two exposures combined into one file. Not every time, but 6 out of 10 exposures were double, or maybe that should be 12 out of 16. I did finally notice and switched the camera off and on again and the next 16 exposures were all fine.
Has anyone else ever experienced this? Just wondering whether I need to panic yet.

Sorry, I'm self-isolating and after my first week I am already bored, otherwise I probably would not have responded. However, despite this being a photography forum, responding gives me something to do, so here goes ...
First, methinks you are a wee bit confused if you are suggesting that Windoze gave us DOS. I'm a decrepit old git and despite my failing memory, I definitely remember using DOS when Bill Gates was still dreaming about Windows (I say dreaming but the reality of the early versions was more of a nightmare). I would also suggest that green phosphorous displays predate Windows, certainly that is what I had on the Apple II that I used around 1980/81. Mind you, I'll definitely agree about BSOD - an absolute pain in the derrière. As for viruses, they do exist on Apple but obviously the bad guys concentrated on the far more popular (in terms on users) OS.
And I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Apple did not give us mice and colour screens, they simply "borrowed" these innovations from the Xerox Alto. Remember me saying I was old? Well, I actually saw an Apple Lisa in use. Ask any user of the early models about the non-reliability of the floppy disk drives.
Personally, I regret that CPM didn't became the de facto OS. Far better than DOS.
Huge apologies for going off on a tangent! I'm still trying to get to grips with moving from Windows 7 to Linux. I really, really miss Lightroom so find myself booting up Windows just to use tat (with its brilliant 2 monitor support. ENOUGH BLOODY COMPUTER TALK!!!

I have a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 APO DG HSM attached to a K3. As others have said, it's stating the bleeding obvious that the lens needs the Pentax K-mount.
One observation, when walking around with this lens, it is not unknown for it to bounce/rub against one's body. That in turn can accidentally switch on the in-lens stabilisation (as well as the manual/auto option). A nuisance if you use in-body stabilisation.

+1 to what calsan said.
I have U1 set to spot focus and AF-S with U2 set to Auto-9 focus and AF-C. The U1 settings are my preferred config but if I need to take a photo of, say birds in flight, I can change to U2 virtually immediately.
