Another photo that demonstrates to me the virtually noiseless performance at 6400 ISO, and lovely rendering from the DFA 21... :)

@greyscale - I'm fully with you on the DFA 21 Ltd, it fits beautifully on the Monochrome and renders wonderfully. Have you tried the DFA*50 1.4? It is far from compact, but again renders absolutely beautifully.

Welcome to the forum @Mack53, and congratulations on your choice!
I have a K3iiiM and 16-50 DA* PLM: I haven't needed to touch the focus adjustments. If you do, there is only one per lens - as Mike said above. Initially, I had to do fine adjust for the 150-450, but after one of the firmware updates earlier in the year I've reset everything and not needed any adjustments... :)

PS I only ever use the centre point in AF-S and recompose - I find it works better for portraits/ static where I know precisely what I want in focus; and tend to use wide apertures. With AF-C I let the camera decide.

I believe (but have no evidence) that the original K-1 was meant to have have the accelerator, but development delays encouraged earlier release of the flagship FF without it. The upgrade path for K-1 to K-1ii was then the morally correct thing to offer early adopters - just one circuit board to change. I really can't see any reason why an entry level camera would get offered a hardware update... ;)

There's nothing to wonder about: K-3iii is current technology, any special customisation of the firmware will be transferable to future K-1iii. K-1[ii] used previous generation operating system, so would have been a software development dead-end. ;)

K3iii Weather Sealing Test

I've been out in heavy rain with K-5, K-1 and K-3iii without any problems using DA* 200, DFA 150-450, DFA*50 and DA* 16-50 PLM over the last decade. They are all rated AW and cope without issue. I don't faff with the zooms too much - I tend to leave them at the long end. It's my kit - I accept the risk, but have not suffered a problem yet. I have also used an Olympus 'pro' camera and lens in heavy rain without a problem, though I'm not convinced they are quite as tough.

These complex pieces of electronics and optics are not guaranteed to work in such hostile conditions, and I do treat the various rubber plugs/covers with a thin coat of silicone grease on the mating edges to help keep the seals working well. :)

ISO 16000 1/60 F4 DA*200/2.8
The noise and resolution at ISO 16000 is reminiscent of medium format Ilford FP4 (ISO 125)
(As shot, converted to jpg via LR classic)

ISO 200 1/500 F7.1 DA21/3.2 Hoya orange filter
(Exposure adjusted, converted to jpg via LR classic)

ISO 200 1/125 F6.3 DA21/3.2 Hoya orange filter
(Exposure and composition adjusted, converted to jpg via LR classic)

I detect a noticeable difference in sharpness between the DFA21 and DA21 - as you'd expect for the price/size difference, but 49mm filters are a lot easier to find..
Using the highlight protection metering gives general underexposure in harsh midday sun, but LR makes correction simple - and there is so much shadow detail to extract. ;-)

Hi @Artphoto,

I'm away from my home fileserver, so here is a new photo with the D-FA*50 fully open. Subject matter is not very photogenic, but hopefully illustrates the performance!

First photo is JPG direct from the camera (almost 11MB before being downsampled on upload Dropbox Link to original), second is via LR Classic. There is virtually no distortion I can detect with this lens, focus is quick, accurate and quiet - no focus fine adjustment has been necessary on my K-1, K-3iii or K-3iiiM.

I have K3iiiM and D-FA*50 1.4 : the combination rocks. (as does the D-FA Ltd 21 2.4 and I agree the DA*200 2.8 is also a good match)

For portraits, I doubt you would be disappointed with the D-FA* - it's clinically sharp from F1.4, but transitions to out of focus beautifully. Hope that helps :)

I'll try to upload something with the combo tomorrow.

Surely the fact that Ricoh/Pentax DO provide something that CaNikony don't IS a positive for Pentax market share?

Also, I don't believe Sigma or Tamron produce anything for Leica M mount. They do still have some Pentax K mount products.

The K3iii is already a great DSLR and I'll proudly consider myself to be 'low hanging fruit' and support Ricoh/Pentax with sales of the K3iiim...

Where are your goalposts, mirrorless? ;)

Pentax K3iii Monochrome officially on Ricoh website

Seeing that the 645Z is 9 years old and the original K1 is 7 years old, it would be a bit daft to 'launch' a new product based on them, the old hardware/firmware architecture would make such a plan a development dead-end.

I would be extremely surprised if there was no monochrome version of the keenly awaited K1iii, based on the reported interest in the K3iii monochrome. I suspect that all the improvements and development effort that went in to the K3iii and K3iii monochrome are relatively easy to scale to a new K1iii. I would also expect that a monochrome GR3 is being worked on.

If the K3iii monochrome is a financial success for Ricoh, it enables R+D for other products. I guess you won't be buying one, but others are. ;)

UK and EU price includes VAT (sales tax), whereas US prices are without sales tax. UK price equates to $2324 when VAT removed, at today's GBP/USD exchange rate, so not as bad as it seems initially. Also pre-ordered :)

New Ricoh Charger

Plain 'vanilla' USB power is just 5V ~1A.

'Quick Charge' mode is proprietary: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quick_Charge

'USB Power Delivery' is an official standard: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_hardware#USB_Power_Delivery

While the earliest USB-PD specification was USB-A and USB-B based, this appears to be subsequently deprecated in later version of the spec.

So to summarise, to get the current standard USB-PD, you need a USB-C connector at both ends. While the K-3iii can charge from a standard USB supply (as packaged with the camera), you need an USB-PD certified supply (that will have an USB-C outlet) to fast charge or externally power it.

I have both a battery-pack and AC adapter that are USB-PD up to 12v, and they work perfectly with the K-3iii for charging or powering. :)

Not that they will make sense on a FF film camera, the DA 18-50 RE, DA* 16-50 PLM and DA 55-300 PLM are focus-by-wire, so there is no mechanical connection between the focus ring and the focussing mechanism. AFAIK all other K mount lenses are mechanically focussed.

The SLR would probably have some metering built-in, therefore KAF4 mount to control the aperture seems likely. It's not just the DFA21 Ltd, as both DFA* 50 and 85 are also KAF4. Autofocus might be included, but not necessary - all the DFA KAF4 lenses have mechanical focusing.

It seems the DFA 15-30 is pretty well regarded, and certainly not 'consumer level'. The DFA 24-70 might not be such a well regarded lens, but still WR and constant aperture - hardly 'consumer level'. I think RI would be better targeting their DFA* efforts at 35/1.4 and possibly 400/4.0. ;)

It’s all about the viewfinder. Hand-held video with an EVF is much more natural than using the back screen. Users whinged about ’needing’ 4k video, so Ricoh obliged. I’ve tried it once on my K-3iii, the output is pretty good, but the user experience is dreadful. Maybe on a fluid head with external monitor it would be more tolerable. I’m with you that mirrorless covers stills and video better. I’ve tried mirrorless, and concluded that I prefer the ergonomics of Pentax OVF, but I just shoot stills.

I don’t think there is any way Ricoh could enter the mirrorless ILC market and turn a profit. The K-3iii is probably the best APS-C DSLR currently in production, so it makes sense to continue in the segment with fewest competitors. That appears to be what Ricoh is saying too. They also seem to have segment leading products in the GR and Theta. :)

The AF-C definitely seems to work with the high speed missile, AKA the puffin. The focus accuracy seems to improve through the burst with the K3iii. Previous models seemed to get worse. There was no way I could have got 2nd or 3rd shot with K1 or K5.

Few Questions I cannot clarify from my Google Fu

From what I can see, AF-C in movie mode needs PLM. The K-3iii manual is useless at giving that information, but if you look at the specifications of the individual lenses only the PLM ones claim to be able to continuously focus in movie mode. I don’t have any PLM lenses, so can’t say how good the AF-C is.

If video is a major use-case for you, I would suggest other options would be better.

The AF-C for normal photography is light years ahead of previous Pentax DSLRs, but still takes some practice and experimentation. I have found even the older SDM of the DA*300 can produce good results with birds in flight with lots of Z axis motion (eg puffins flying towards you). For portraits I still rely on AF-S single and focus/recompose to nail the eye focus. I have tried using face/eye detection and it works quite well, but isn’t close to 100% perfect.

The high ISO performance is a bit better than the K-1, and the stabilisation is substantially better.

The LV focus seems quick and accurate with most lenses, but I still find the Sigma 18-35 F1.8 can be hit/miss in both LV and OVF modes. The touchscreen is very responsive and allows easy focus point selection in LV.

I’ve had the K-3iii for almost a year now and it is my choice for action/walk round. K-1 still has an edge for portrait and landscape, but that is probably partly down to the lenses: DFA 15-30, DFA* 50 and FA ltd 77 are better than the equivalent lenses I have for APSC.

Hope that helps :)

Not sure what fees, other than shipping and local VAT are applicable. If you ask them, I'm sure they'll let you know how much it is. And UK VAT rate of 20% would be removed and Polish rate applied. But agreed, would have easier pre-Brexit: still waiting with bated breath for all the promised benefits of Brexit.... ;)
