Clackers' Beginners Tip 90: Two off camera flashes

Hell yeah. Pertwee was out before I was born - I think the first doctor I saw on screen was McCoy, he was ok. Colin baker was irritating. Davidson was just boring. Tom baker was great. But Pertwee was the best.

It’s hard to really opine on the first two, I haven’t seen all their episodes.

Favorite bit of Pertwee trivia — I cannot find a source for it now but iirc it was in an old rolling stone article (and I’m paraphrasing since I can’t remember it exactly) — “there are only two men alive who can pull off a velvet jacket and ruffled shirt - Jon Pertwee and Jimi Hendrix… and I’m not so sure about Hendrix”
Back when a screwdriver was just a screwdriver that could twist stuff through walls, not a magic wand and Deus ex machina device.

77 Limited won’t autofocus, sometimes flashes F—

Yeah, I was looking at the exploded lens view and the only thing I could think of was the part labeled contact brush. Googling that shows it’s also called a focus brush.

Last time I opened a len, the aperture pin springs went everywhere, so I’m not doing that again, especially not on one like this - I’ll have to wait til I can get it fixed or sell it as damaged. That sucks :(

Thanks, everyone!

No, those are all fine. (I just cleaned the contacts on both and other lenses work fine).

I just reproduced it on my camera and with more time to experiment, it works fine until you try to focus past about 20 feet, manually or AF, everything between the minimum 2.3 ft or so and ~20 feet, it can read the aperture and the AF works, any distance past that, it goes to F— and AF stops working until you manually focus it closer.

It’s really freaking weird.

Edit - of, and if I put the lens on focused to infinity, it asks me the focal length like it would fit a manual lens.

I just had a buyer test my 77mm, and it was weird. It wouldn’t AF until he switched to manual and back, maybe he moved the focus on manual, not sure. But it would autofocus once and then stop til he did it again. He says it would stop AF as soon as it hit infinity.

His K1 showed an aperture in live view, but the viewfinder showed F—

I’ve had my k3 not recognize assorted lenses in the past, including my 31mm but it was always something where removing the lens and replacing it fixed it. It’s never happened to me with the 77 but I don’t use it much, hence selling that one.

Anyone have any ideas? I’ll test it on mine when I get home in a couple hours. Weird. Good thing neither of us had to drive very far.

Is Your Camera Your "BELOVED"?

Camera bodies, not so much, but I dearly love my 15 ltd, 31ltd, 55-135 da*, and "bokina" lenses and would be sad to part with them.

I was unemployed recently and if that had gone on much longer I would have had to sell some of my gear to cover more immediate needs, but those would be the last and most reluctantly parted with. I don't see beloved as a bad adjective for them.

As a noun, it doesn't work, that implies a person, but as an adjective it's fine, whether it's used sincerely, sarcastically, or with a bit of hyperbole.

Well-loved doesn't work even though they essentially mean the same thing, because it carries the implication that the item is heavily used and in a worn condition.

Cherished works, but just by typing this I ended up listening to the Association in my. head until I queued it up on YouTube.

Is it time to ditch the SD card concept?

Because those things happen with the frequency of water damage to electronics? SD cards are really hard to screw up. SSDs are a different beast. Especially once someone gets the bright idea of encrypting the data to lock it to a single device.

At any rate, this entire concept is a solution for a problem that doesn’t exist. In a drone, every excess gram reduces flight time, and an ssd chip soldered permanently to the board removes the weight of the entire (micro)SD mechanism as well as any waste weight from the casing of the card. It also offers up selling options to the manufacturer, like a Mac, where Apple can sell increased storage and memory at several times the going rate because it cannot be upgraded later.

A camera doesn’t need to budget every last gram against battery life, and it certainly doesn’t need fixed storage like the garbage devices that some of the first consumer grade digicams were.

I seem to remember lensign focustune working for this too, but I could be mistaken.
The lens align creator, Michael tapes, has cancer and let his main site and the lens align site shut down, but you can still buy lensalign with focustune at bh/adorama/Amazon and the support site is still live.

Even if it didn’t do the adjustments directly, I remember it doing an amazing job of helping me fine tune my focus.

So far as I can tell those two da* lenses have identical rendering. I like the 50-135 better since it’s easier to carry and use handheld. I’ve had it repaired once (dropped it from 4 feet at just the wrong angle, knocked an internal but loose and messed up focusing), and the second time it broke (literally snapped, the mount stayed in the camera and the rest came off, with all the pins and springs popped out, some screws broken, after it flew from my passenger seat to the floor when I slammed on the brakes to avoid an accident), I bought another one because the used price was about the same as the repair.

The only 3 lenses I try to always carry with my camera are the 50-135, the 31 ltd, and the smc 15mm ltd. I love my bokina and 50mm/1.2 porst, too, but they’re a bit too heavy and situational for always having handy. :)

Now, could I find any photos that gave a decent 1:1 comparison to show why I feel like they render the same? Not really, but here are a few from both since this is a thread for photos anyway. :)

K-3 isn’t recognizing 77ltd lens

I don’t use the 77 as much as the 31, and I’ve barely used my camera since messing up my shoulder last fall,

Popped on the 77 this morning to shoot a very large group photo from across an intersection ... and it asked me for focal length, showed F—, and no autofocus.

Took it off, nothing looked wrong with the mount. Put the 31 back in, detected it no problem. 77 again, no luck.

Aperture ring is on A, nothing weird with it. The lens is pretty pristine. It’s lived in an optek gasketed mount cap since day 1, in a padded neoprene pouch. Never dropped, barely used.

Anyone have suggestions?

Thanks!!!

Under $100 you're looking at something universal, not made to fit the specific camera. Finding one intended for use with a grip may be a bit of a pain, not sure.

You can get this one intended for a generic dslr body without grip from B&H for $20. Desmond Desmond DAL-1 QR L Plate DAL-1 B&H Photo Video

Left lenses in basement for two day-what should I do

Unless you're replacing or drying them out in an oven regularly, you have a few packs of completely used up desiccant in there.

They don't really last that long when they're not in completely sealed environments, and anything you get inside something else (say, the ever popular tiny packets from inside shoe boxes) is probably already completely used up. When you order them fresh, they come in sealed containers.

If you want to be confident you're actually protecting your stuff, get something like this: 10 Gram Indicating Silica Gel Aluminum Canister - SilicaGelPackets.com - it changes color when it's no longer absorbing moisture, then you know to throw it in an oven (for 2 hours at 280 degrees F, it even has the instruction on the tin) to reactivate it.

Fungus will happily grow in the light and it doesn't really care much about temperature. It just doesn't like UV light and extreme heat. Humidity is the real killer.

In some cases, for manual lenses, at least, you may be able to do it yourself by adjusting the set screw on the focusing ring.

As an example, there's info on doing so with the samyang 8mm fisheye in this post:

yeah, and it's barely readable and looks awful. If the ebay seller 3d printing them anyway, it seems like it would have made more sense to print them in a solid color like the grey from the OP's mockup

I just bought a k-01 on eBay and the seller didn’t mention the missing dial though it was missing in the pictures if I’d looked more carefully. Any chance this ever got off the ground? I don’t want to pay 40% of what I paid for the camera for a disk and the only other option is translucent white for some dumbass reason.

One thing to note is the HD lenses have curved aperture blades where the SMC lenses have straight ones,

While this is generally a good thing for bokeh, it ruins the amazing stopped down star burst effect the SMC 15mm had with lights. The straight blades give you a sharp, clear, straight ray, the curved blades spread it out and make it less distinct. In thumbnails it's not an obvious difference, but at printable sizes, it's clear.

I have something like that, but this isn’t exactly a situation where it would have been helpful, because I wouldn’t have been using it anyway.

This stupid business trip (I’ve been in rural Minnesota for a month and because of the Canadian wildfires I haven’t even gotten any decent astrophotography out of it) will finally be over Friday and I’ll be back in a semblance of civilization, so I can deal with repair quotes and so on then.

I have insurance, of course, but the deductible is probably more than a used lens. I’ll have to ask my agent. It’s under my business policy and I have no idea what the deductible is for my electronics inland marine coverage

Maybe if I include my 16-50 that’s become effectively a 16-35 after my wife dropped it on the floor of the car (never bothered fixing it because I don’t really like it that much and only use it when I need a wide angle in rain/mist) it’ll end up being worth a claim, but I doubt it.

Although I think the real underlying damage waswhen I had to slam on the brakes a few days ago to avoid a head-on collision and the camera was on the passenger seat, it actually broke when I forgot it was on the hotel desk chair and tipped said chair over to retrieve a sock that was beneath it... crap.

Snapped like a twig and I’m not sure if I found all the pins.

While it looks like a simple fix (one broken piece of plastic the mount screws into), I have no idea how much it’ll cost.

Has anyone had this done and how much it cost?

I’ve had my 60-250 repaired but that was a more serious problem (dropped to hard floor from 5 feet up, no camera attached, internal elements broke loose) so I can’t inagine it’s a good comparison.

This is my favorite lens, and the one that came with my first Pentax camera :(

---------- Post added 08-18-18 at 10:33 AM ----------

Update: it’s worse than I thought. Zoom ring is stiff and when I got it to turn a thin piece of rubber began to extrude itself from the area of the green ring and there’s a definite mismatch in spacing - the side wit the broken plastic mount piece gaps open so the green ring is loose. :(

You should really sell them together. The extender isn’t going to be as great with another lens and finding the matching extender for this particular make of the lens (the one that has auto aperture support) would be a pain if someone wanted it later.

I’m tempted, but I already have a bokina with the 1:1 adapter, it just isn’t one with an A setting.

FYI, cyberjunkie, OP, and anyone else who owns or is considering a porst 55/1.2, yes, it's sort of milky/dreamy wide open... until you put a hood on it (one intended for 85mm lenses if you're on crop sensor).

And they're not kidding about the depth of field, and an 85mm/1.2 would be even narrower. Personally switching to a matte ee-s focusing screen helped but not enough - having focus peaking in live view makes it much easier.

Attached: all handheld in ambient light, with hood for sure on the foliage, the woman and I forget on the man but I think not; no hood for sure on the kid (that was the week I got the lens. I think that was actually like f/2 not 1.2 but you can still see the sort of dreamy/milky quality). Foliage shot is to show the narrow dof more obviously.

side note: that 8mm is not full frame, and get the rokinon "HD" version with the removable hood and better coatings, especially if you want to use it FF. It'll still cover a good bit of the screen. Lots of people on other FF systems were filing the built-in hood off of the samyang til the rokinon with the removable hood came out. :)

You can see a simple view of with and without the hood on FF here: Shaving the lens hood of the Samyang (Bower, Rokinon, Walimex) 8mm fisheye lens for usage on the Sony E-mount with full-frame sensors – PanoTwins
