Just the explanation
1/180s is the fastest shutter speed at which both curtains of the shutter are open at the same time; this is the so-called X-sync. This allows the flash light to cover the full sensor. At e.g. 1/250s, one curtain will not be fully open at the moment that the flash fires. The result will be a picture with a dark band.
Pentax thinks that dSLR users are stupid and need to be protected against themselves :(
If you need a flash at higher shutter speeds, you need to use a HSS capable flash.

If they're not firing at all, either they don't have batteries in (doubtful), they're defective (also doubtful you'd get a batch of bad pieces), or your shutter speed is faster than the allowed limit of 1/180 (most likely). ---------- Post added 07-09-15 at 11:00 AM ---------- After you ensure they are not all defective, you want to pair the flashes to the control unit.
