If Ricoh were to announce a new camera right now, it would be spread worldwide within 30 minutes. Trade shows were places where manufacturers could talk to the media and the media could spread the word. No need for that anymore. If one were to pick up an issue of Wired or Time magazines and compare them to what they were 20 years ago they would be shocked. It is all part of the same reality.

If the subject is separated from the background, a sharp telephoto lens allows for pop. Even if the bokeh is nothing special, the effect can be good.

Hello Pentax enthusiasts,
We have been gathering and using Pentax Film gear for many years but Pentax digital cameras are not very common in New Zealand shops.
We spent the last 6 weeks on holiday in the Philippines with our ME and MX Film cameras (and a Nikon D7200) and got a chance to visit the location of the Pentax factory,
unfortunately it was a public holiday so we only got to the front of the building but it still made my day!
A few days later we were in a Cebu shopping mall, While my Wife and Daughter were going around the boring shops My son and I found a camera shop that had Pentax's.
They only had 2 DSLR's both K70's, we had a play and quite liked it so they did us a good deal on a nice new Black K70 (the other camera was grey with black Pentax script).
We used the K70 with our old 50mm 1.4 while on holiday with very impressive results.
We now have the K70 home in NZ so we can have a play with all our old manual lenses on it.

I’ve had 15 different 28mm lenses. The SMC K 28/3.5 is the only one I’ll never sell. Although slower, I rank it just below the FA 31 Limited!

I tried my hand at my first lens repair and what I thought was fungus, turned out to be balsam separation (see 12a/b)
For the 40mm, the only "doublet" element can be accessed through the rear of the lens, so dissambling the ring in the front of the lens is unnecessary, unless you have to for your own lens.
As you can see I am not a professional and I know I'll be roasted for the tools used, but that is all I had on hand.:D
Aside from the tools, you will need an optical adhesive (I bought on amazon) and a UV light (also bought on amazon (bulb only).
To get the doublet apart, I steeped the element in a insulated water bottle with boiling water for about 6-9hrs. I would change the lukewater every few hours with fresh hot water.
When loose enough, I pressed hard against the lens as if rubbing 2 coins together and it slid right off. The old adhesive resembled a contact lens for human eyes...but your lens might be different.
After, I thoroughly cleaned both lens elements with soap and warm water.
For the UV curing, I kept the UV light on for about 2-3 min, which seems to be more than enough as when I tested it on a sheet of paper, the glue was dry in about 10 seconds or less.
Please let me know if you have any questions! |

There is a cemented doublet in the rear cell of the FA43. From the photos posted it appears the haze is somewhere between the un-cemented elements 6/7, should be a simple cleaning job.
Isopropyl alcohol, Acetone, Toluene - all should do a good job of cleaning the haze off.

If you can't afford to keep the K-3, you certainly won't be able to afford the full frame lenses you will soon be craving.
Stick with crop for now - that trio of zooms will serve you very well. Or find a way to afford to keep both bodies.
P.S. the jump in size is not as big a deal as you might think.

I think it is helpful to have exit interviews - learning why people leave helps others make decisions to stay or leave but also helps underscore perceptions about where other brands may be advantaged.

I'm not sure if this will help anyone out, but a few years ago I lost the lens hood for my Pentax FA* 80-200 f2.8. I was able to alter another Pentax hood, but it was never the same and I have been looking for a genuine replacement hood to pop up for a long time. Right around christmas a south korean seller on ebay put one up for sale. They also have/had some pentax F* 300mm f4.5 items.
The stuff is NIB and not the cheapest, but might be the holly grail to someone looking for a 300mm f4.5 lens hood. They might have even had a case and tripod collar. I was nervous about buying a $70 item from South Korea, but I got it in around 2 weeks.
Here is a link.... 12thsaint | eBay
Maybe it will help a few collectors out there.

None of this really accords to my experience with vintage wide angle glass. The main advantage of modern wide angle glass is sharpness wide open and sharpness in the corners even when stopped down. There can also be some advantages in terms of light transmission (superior coatings), as we often note with the DFA 15-30, but I'd be careful about being too dogmatic about that. As long as you're willing to stop the older lenses down (which you're going to do if you're shooting landscapes in any case), you can get images that come surprisingly close, in terms of sharpness, contrast, and saturation, to what you can get out of a great lens like the DFA 15-30. The only thing you're really giving up with vintage wide angles is wide-open performance and sharpness in the very far corners.
The Rokinon 20 looks like a very nice lens. It would be great for astrophotography. But one reason I would not buy that lens is that, outside of astrophotography, I prefer what I see from my FA 20-35 and M 20/4 . To my way of seeing things, those older lenses produce better color and rendering than what the Rokinon/Samyang's generally provide.
As far as vintage normals and teles being better than vintage ultra-wides: while that may be true for the normals (but they're not better by all that much), that hasn't been my experience with vintage teles. I own the M 135/3.5, the K 200/4 and the A 70-210. Excluding the very far corners, my M 20/4 is sharper than any of those lenses.
A couple of sample images, first from the FA 20-35:

There are a few Hasselblad mounts:
Hasselblad Xpan has a registration distance of 34.27 mm (bayonet)
Hasselblad H system has a registration distance of 61.63 mm (bayonet)
Hasselblad 500/2000 has a registration distance of 74.9 mm (bayonet)
Hasselblad/Kiev88 has a registration distance of 82.1 mm (multi start thread)
The Pentax 645 has a registration distance of 70.87 mm. So, theoretically, the last two on the list could be adapted.

With a MIREX 645-K Adapter it is possible to use most of the Pentax 645 Lenses on the K1 as tilt and shift lenses. The adapter includes a tripod mount. I use the 35/120/200 mm lenses in combination with this adapter. Exception: a) the old version of the adapter does fit only to K10/K5/K3 but not to K1. Please ask for the K1-Version. b) 645 DA Lenses doesn't work. MIREX-Adapter f |

Thanks for your excellent advice. I do think that the fungus is behind the triplet, so I will give it a try. Well, I am almost located in Australia, which is in Austria ;)
Is there any special tools needed, like a lens spanner or rubber tubes?
Best regards,
Peter

you'll be wanting the OEM adapter, high price and all... if you decide that M42 isn't your cuppa, you can turn around and sell it for what you paid for it...

Personally, if I exceed 1000 images I would consider that a failure of curation. It would be time to delete, not time to upgrade.
As it is I'll stick to the free account and about 100 images.

It's a little like film, where color is dependent on which film is chosen. But then the color profile is a known factor so one has a good idea of what to expect. I've bought my FA 77 LTD way back for use on my film bodies before getting into a DSLR. I shoot mostly jpeg images, where the camera provides the color palette, according to the Custom Image setting. I have found the KP's in-camera processing to be really exceptional in many respects. I almost always use the "Bright" setting, with which the KP does a more accurate rendering from my point of view compared to other models I've used. Well saturated without being over-done, and quite accurate, less magenta than with my other models. Just be sure to implement "Fine Sharpening" in the Custom Image menus. I figure if I like what I'm getting here, if doing RAW I can do so with the camera's settings included, or not.
