Skipping the shake reduction mechanism for sure saves space. With the nowadays low noise at high ISO, shake reduction is less valuable than it was 20 years ago. That might be a step in the direction of a ME-super era compact DSLR. Back to basics, just exchanging the film compartment for a FF sensor.

Might be deteriorated foam from the shock absorbing strip above the mirror. After all those years the foam gets sticky and when a loose part gets in between the shutter blades it is game over. Something once happened with a Super A of mine. If so, try to clean it with pure ethanol or so. No guaranties btw...

I think the freed unit contains the three front lenses of this A100. Try to unscrew the metal ring around the front element, maybe you get access from that side of the block and not from behind.

I never had a glued part in these metal/glass era Pentax lenses, everything is based on screws and screwing. It might have been a little corroded in a humid environment.

We are talking about the non-macro 2.8/100, not the macro. Or am I wrong? The non-macro M I own (sorry, I meant M instead of K) and A are almost similar.

Last week I fixed a wobbling filter ring of my K1.2/50. The lens itself was OK, only the front metal tube with filter ring hung on only one screw (instead of three).

This Youtube video explained how to get to these three screws:

You Tube

The front part of the focusing ring (with the rubber on it) is a screw mechanism itself, so you can unscrew it what gives the space to the three tiny screws that hold the front metal tube.

Maybe the same is the situation at yours. By unscrewing the front tube you might find a solution to get to the front lenses.

Lenses that I cleaned from fungus became bright and clear only by using pure ethanol. Just buy cheap "bio ethanol" used for fire heaters, drop the affected elements in it for a while and weep them dry with a clean cotton handkerchief.

Btw, I own the K100 predecessor of this A-lens. These were optical and ecstatic jewels in the times they were produced. Even now these are tack sharp stopped down a bit on my K1ii. I hope you can fix it.

I wish you good luck!

Interesting, in case someone owns the ME-super, K1ii and K3iii and the M 1.7/50 and FA 1.8/31 please do the next comparison from a tripod:

ME with 1.7/50
K1ii with 1.7/50
K3iii with 1.8/31

Measure through the viewfinder the frame size, FoV and the luminosity.

I expect the ME to be the brightest and largest, but only 92% of the film size.
The K1ii covers the complete sensor size, what you see is what you get, but smaller and darker than the ME combo, darker because the mirror reflects not all the light because the AF-system.
The K3iii also covers 100% but the larger magnification of 1.05x does not compensate the smaller focusing screen, so I expect it to be smaller and darker than the K1ii combo.

A smaller sensor/focusing screen gathers less photons, you can enlarge that optically but that decreases the brightness. Just like putting a slide projector further from the screen, everything gets larger and darker.

I maybe wrong but please explain to me where I do a misinterpretation. I do not own the K3iii and the 31mm unfortunately...

Although the K3iii pentaprism offers similar view of that of the K1ii, the amount of light captured is less simply because the sensor / focusing screen are half the size.

Saying this I take in account you use lenses with similar FoV overall, f.i. a 35 mm on the K3 and a 50 mm on the K1.

Other advantage of FF is that for a specific FoV the FF-lens often has a larger wide open aperture, f.i. the FA 50/1.4 vs the DA 35/2.4.

Generally you can say; the bigger the sensor, the brighter an OVF. Or am I wrong?

The non-AF SLR's in the past also had the advantage of not having translucent mirrors, almost all the incoming light goes to the focusing screen.

You mean new "digital" full frame? Did I miss an announcement there will be one?

My K1ii and KP are buddies, very similar in look & feel and build quality. I like "too heavy for their size". So I really hope there are successors in case my cams start to fail.

My KP really shines with some popular M-lenses. Most M-lenses lack a bit IQ at the borders / corners but shine on APS-C stopped down a bit. The KP combined with M-lenses is a handsome combo.

It would be great in case successors of the K1 and KP could shut the aperture in Av-mode as these do in M-mode. So when I use a F1.4 K/M lens at F5.6 and I correct with +4 EV in Av-mode I don't have to use the green button and I can use all three exposure settings (spot, center and multi-segment). The EV-range have to be expanded then or better, assign the third wheel with a kind of "stop-correction", one click is one extra stop correction. Hopefully in Japan at Ricoh's they grab all advises mentioned here on the forum...

Yes, you don't see these often. Difficult to use, not a lens for birds in fly... But nice to own, it is a great piece of engineering. Only looking at it is very satisfying.

No idea if Ricoh will bring a new FF digital, so far I am still happy with my K1ii and KP. These deliver all I want. But such a retro style basic MF FF that fully supports all my old manual glass would be great for me. No green button and a bright focussing screen will do fine. I keep my K1 for the modern lenses.

Such a camera will not be produced, I know. The amount of people who would buy it is aging and shrinking rapidly. Let's hope there will be a K1ii successor and this is not the end of FF either. But the dying roadmap might be a sign of the opposite..

I would be happy with a FF digital Super-A, so no AF at all, no SR, no video, no rear screen, just a robust basic digital K-mount camera for all those M42/K/M/A lenses with a physical aperture coupling and a 36 Mp sensor in it. I adore the bright viewfinder with the split screen inside, so much better than DSLR's. That's the only way to keep it compact. Use your smartphone to view your shots with a cable or WiFi. In case Ricoh offer that for € 1500 I'm in.

For color I prefer Kodak Ektar 100, it has super fine grain, character is a bit saturated but very forgiving with scanning. Here in the Netherlands we can buy it easy online and it is even often in stock at the photo super stores of Kamera Express

Rokinon 14mm - how bad is it decentered?

Not bad at all I would say. The differences are very small and the corner performance wide open is really good for a low budget lens. This lens also shows almost no abberations in the far corners, which is remarkable. Only minus is the charasteristic "moustache" distortion visible on architecture shots like yours. And these Rokinons are famous for their totally off of the distance scale on the lens, you can adjust and calibrate the infinity however.
So enjoy your super wide angle, it is a difficult but very nice lens for the little money payed.

Great Price On "Like New" Pentax K-1" Camera Body

The K1 is still a machine to produce great 36 Mp pics and is build to last long. The low pricing might be an indication how the already rapidly shrinking (non-smartphone) imaging market shifts to MILC. I choose to stay in Pentax, for my photography it makes no sense to invest heavy in Nikon Z8 or so, as long as I can buy 2nd hand K1 body's for prices like this I can continue the rest of my life in what I am doing.

But it also shows the dilemma of Ricoh to launch successors. Their potential market for buyers of a new designed 3K€ K1iii is so small nowadays that they can't make a profitable business case anymore. Such a new camera is not 3-4 times better than whats now offered "like new" on the 2nd hands market. It is more likely they will do the K70 => KF trick in case they are running out of components. And even that will be OK for me.

I do not expect any revolutionary launches of Pentax gear anymore. Let's first wait for what they bring with film, and how that will be received in the Pentax community. For Ricoh I hope it will not be a disappointment.

Buy the M50/4, or buy both the M50/4 and M100/4, both are cheap available and offer good sharpness stopped down a little (most needed for macro) and a very nice bokeh. M-lenses are younger (less old), allow wide open focusing and mounting is easier.

Take care for lens separation, you can check that holding the lens into a bright light beam and inspecting it nearby.

16 Bit Versus 8 Bit Processing

I use Adobe Suit CS-5 / PS 12.0 . The JPG-compression goes from 1-12. But reality is that setting 11 and 12 result to bigger but not substantial better files. That's the reason why I use setting 10.

Sometimes files become too large because of artifacts or noisy grain (high ISO). By using the noise/despeckle filter this freshens up nicely without loosing real detail.

A level-10 (PS) 8-bit JPG file as a final result of imaging is perfect for storage, screen viewing and HQ printing. But sometimes it is better to do post from 16 bits RAW because the algorithms in our cameras have difficulties to do that the way we prefer. Most of the time it is about managing the dynamic range and the white balance. But once adjusted right in post everything is covered nicely in a level 10 JPG file. My 36 Mp K1 files usually take 6-12 Mb of space.

Comparing the lens diagrams of both lenses these almost look similar. Maybe the 2.4 in fact is a blinded 2.0 in plastic housing without aperture ring. Despite the different build and a half stop aperture the IQ both lenses deliver will be identical.

PentaxForums did more recent a review on modern sensors. I think the differences in IQ between the M and the FA are minor, the DFA is of another class. For astro that really matters.

The F-series are mentioned better build than the later FA-series. These share similar optics as the M-1.4 and the recent "classic", only different coatings during all those years. The older K-1.4 and M42 (7/6) had a little different diagram in the catalogs so I think these are really a little bit different. All these lenses are best between F4 and F5.6, wide open they suffer coma, not ideal for astro.

It might be deteriorated glass/coating because of fungus, it also might be lens separation. In case the latter, how older the lens how better the fix. The old balsam is more easy to remove than the more modern glues.

In case you own the 15 or 21 mm prime and the XS 40 you travel light with a KF. The KF + XS 40 have enough resolving power to crop for a more tele-look.
