Update.....brokedown and bought a KP + 55-300 PLM. Took it out today and made some tough shots with it. Indoor product shots with no flash and outside stadium under the lights. I’m pleased so far with the performance, just need to spend some time getting to know it and work on my skills again. Really impressed that I got several keepers under the lights at 300mm. May need to up the ISO more than 3200 to get faster shutter speeds. Need to set up my user modes for just these situations. Any helpful hints are welcome!

OMG. This thread makes me feel the need to get out my small bag o gear and organize. I really need to sell off the old stuff since it will never get used anymore (except to sit on a shelf and serve as decoration which isn't a bad idea since most of my stuff won't bring $$$ LOL). I am debating a KP myself to replace my K20 + the new 55-300. Good luck with your decisions! LOL ;)

Wow! I checked in to see the post progress and thought, "what the heck happened overnight?"......

Regardless, I hope this is true.....I can probably hold out a bit longer and maybe the KP will drop another $200. Would make my indecision go away for sure.

Yes, thanks for the advice. I was hoping to buy in October (my car is in great shape but is 16 years old, gets me there and I still love it). But a new and more capable camera will get me through the next two years and I will be more "inspired" to capture these last years of having her "home" with us.

For a few years I was on fire. I was inspired by following Col. Chris Hatfield on FB while he was in space. He's photos were awesome and had me looking at my everyday life in new and intriguing ways! I did a Photo of the Day on my own FB page and explored macros for a while. The shame was my inspiration was aided by the iPhone, I always had it with me and was constantly taking a picture or two. When I had my eyes open to what was around me I was finding interesting compositions everywhere! I need to get that back only with a dSLR so I can process out some great and big prints for my house.

I have a couple of weeks until marching band season really ramps up and I really am having a hard time justifying, 1.) not upgrading my K20 to the KP (along with a 55-300mm lens); and 2.) spending money! LOL. The more I look at old pics the more I desire to upgrade but I am saving toward a new car in a few months and I'm so close. Ugh!!! I only have two more years until my kiddo graduates so I could totally justify the time with a new camera and lens. Decisions!

The timing is good for all this hub bub since I have marching band season coming up and I'm doing more product photography with work now. Need new stuff!! Regardless if it's won/free or just refreshing and updating information on techniques and equipment. Hate that my beloved K20 is so outdated!

I feel confident that I would like to keep a good 300mm range in my bag after looking back at my photos. So upgrading bodies and upgrading my telephoto zoom lens are on my list. I do like a decent telephoto zoom, the Pentax offering is ideal but that Sigma 100-300 looks promising too just a less range. Argh!!! Mo money, more spending right? Where's that "if you have $5K to spend in a day" fun money?

Yes, I agree with that short simple breakdown there. ;)

I usually take most photos at the prelims performance during the day and enjoy the show for the finals performance. But there are times I do want a pic or two from the evening performance so I think I could handle the compromise to have the reach. If I was on the level/track during a performance doing close up's the 50-135 would be more of a draw. Such a nice lens! But I think I'd be good with paying more for the KP and making use of what I currently have glass-wise and upgrading the telephoto into the 21st century. You always need a decent zoom telephoto out to 300mm right but having to upgrade bodies is a bit of a downside.

Could I do a firmware update to my K20 and get any use from the DA 55-300 PLM? I just still feel a little dizzy thinking of the cost all at once. LOL

I'm resurrecting my dead post from last year....because I still have not pulled the trigger on a new improved system but now I have gone back to work so the funds are coming back! I have been reading reviews on the K70 and the KP and contemplating an upgrade in camera body now. I have been using a lowly Canon Rebel at work for quick product shots for social media to move inventory but when I review the pictures I cringe and I miss my own equipment! Thinking of taking the K70 + Tamron 28-75 f2.8 in for a few days and see if I like the results better and feel good about my shots. LOL

Anyway, marching season is starting up again and I still have not purchased any upgraded equipment! Do you the earlier recommendations in this thread hold up? What do you folks think about between the K70 and the KP? I don't care much about video on a dSLR so any autofocus or image quality surrounding that is leftovers for me. I whip out the iPhone 7Plus. Man I am rusty still!

K70 or KP with the HD PENTAX-DA 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE Lens??

Thank you all for the wonderful and insightful comments!

For my purpose the longer focal range would be ideal and the new body upgrade sounds like an improvement overall. I may need to save up some money for next year and take the plunge but man I have always loved that 50-135 but felt the range would be too short for the situations I find myself taking photos. I just like fast glass though since I usually find myself indoors at distance and now outside at night!!

I remember walking in the Botanical Garden many years ago and seeing people using mobile phones to take photos of the beautiful views and told my friend, "I'll never take photos here with an iPhone." Never say never....LOL

My current kit includes a K20D, DA16-45, TamronSPAF28-75XRDi, TamronAF70-300LD. I have been using the 70-300 for daytime photos from the stands but I have a love/hate relationship with this lens. Great reach and cheap but not so great final results, slow to focus and missed/blurry shots and purple fringe, ugh! I don't even attempt pics once the sun goes down and the lights come up, it's a no win situation. LOL

So my two choices are new Pentax 50-300 or a used Pentax 50-135. I plan on taking pics on the sidelines and in the stands. If I go with the faster lens I will shoot in the evening under the lights also, otherwise I will stick with day time when possible. I've always wanted that 50-135 but could never afford new pricing so settling for used if I can find it would satisfy that long urge.

Marching band has been the only times lately that I pull out the old equipment which makes me sad, but I can't bear to let it go for the times when I need faster and sharper and longer photos than an iPhone can get. I loathe that I mostly use a stupid phone for photos anymore but it is what it is. I would not get enough money on my used equipment to cover the cost of a smaller, newer system with telephoto capabilities. OR is there a solution I'm not aware of such as a nice mirrorless that would be under $700?

Help an old timer who has grown out of touch out! :)

The quest for the ultimate camera bag

In my ultimate camera bag search, I've narrowed in it down to using a Domke F6 bag for general storage and toting and then generic bags that I add inserts into for specific purpose activities. For hiking I use an Osprey Talon 22 backpack paired with a neoprene lunch bag to carry the my camera + 28-75mm, then a neoprene bottle sleeve to protect my 70-300mm. These can be easy moved around but still kept handy in my bag.

I've also entertained the notion of purchasing a PacSafe camera insert for backpacks. It looks nice but a bit big for my bag. You may find it interesting though.

Good luck in your search! ;)

I spend a lot of time in barns so most of what I'm shooting is in terrible light so here's a high ISO offering....

Thank you Mike! Actually it's digital but it was a horrible color photo, very low light with those small barn windows to back light the subject (without me actually being in the stall with them). Lots of noise. I was just about ready to trash it but I loved the story it told so I tried PP'ing it to B&W and it was magic. I was very happy with the results and thrilled that it made the PPG cut.

Happy accidents are my favorites, they always tell the best stories.
