A few from today.
420mm seems a little short for Blackbirds.. . . |

Yes. I've got the 500 4.5. Seldom for birds and larger wildlife, but for other things yes. One gets spoiled with the DA*300 f4 using it for shooting reptiles or insects. I will commonly see an interesting plant, some insects or similar and have to back a long ways away to get it in focus with the 500mm. I tried an extension tube but it gets unwieldy.
The only solution that I've found is to hand the 300 or a 100 on a strap and carry it around as well.

After 2 nights out with the long lens attached I was not seeing a thing, I was ready to give up trying to get some shots of these (very) little fellas.
Sigma 150-500
This first one was the best of the bunch.

Took my Sigma 500/4.5 with me to work and finally got some shots of the snowy in flight but it refuses to look towards the camera. |

Nice shots, Brodie. ---------- Post added 02-07-15 at 11:57 PM ---------- Got very lucky today when I visited a local popular trail. Saw this barred owl on my way back to the car. My first encounter. I waited for it to fully open its eyes for a long while but it did not oblige.
Before that, I checked this local creek that reported to have a northern shoveler present. It is surprising that there is still open water as the temperature has been around -20 oC at night for the last week or so. Lucky to catch a few shots before it flew off. |

Great shots folks.
This is a female Stonechat ,these pictures were taken using my K-5/Sigma 500mm f4.5 EX DG on a Kirk window mount on the drivers side of my car. I managed to follow this bird up a track while driving one handed and holding the camera in my free hand, the bird perched on a post and I was able to coast to a great position while fixing the lens onto the Kirk mount. How about a 400mm f5.6? I don't care what features it has, but if they can't make it for less than $1200, don't make it at all.

How about a DA100-400 WR and a 1.4TC WR to match up with it.

Went to the "Reptile Expo" with my son today (and had to repeatedly say "no, we're just looking!") and brought the K-3 and 35 Ltd. for some low-light macros. While it was snakes, snakes, snakes for the most part, there were also some nice "legged" reptiles, amphibians, and the occasional Tawny Owl!
That last shot is an axolotl (yes, they are captive-bred as pets) under UV light! K-3 WB did a great job through thick arcrylic and under such strange light... |

Okay, it's out of the box but I am at the office, no formal tests yet. With my FA31 and FA43 it focuses very fast in low light, on a solid black briefcase. The Select Focus Point works like it should, not the crappy K-5 implementation. Feels slightly heavier but the grip is a little more substantial which is makig up for it(with the FA31 mounted). Put my old Gordy strap on it, some black gaffer tape cover the K-3 insignia, looks 95% like the K-5...hopefully 100% to my spouse...lol. The rear lcd is nicer, 3:2 is a bonus, the diopter is way easier to adjust as well. For all the Ricoh whiners out there, the box say Ricoh on it!!!...lmao, there will be gnashing of teeth over this for sure. The viewfinder is also larger, although that may be more the fact that it is squeaky clean than substantially larger.
