300mm plus Lens Club: discuss your long lenses

It is incredibly slow and painful to try and capture birds in flight, and I think the contacts are dirty because sometimes the OS and AF don't work and I need to disconnect the lens and click it back in again.

Can't wait until the 150-450 is in people's hands and we can see a review of it, this 150-500 autofocus is killing me!

You mean the canon 100-400 USM II? Nah that thing is incredibly fast, I watched a video of it just after the Pentax and the canon focused at infinity to close and out agin in the same time the Pentax did 2/3 of the process mention of the canon lens.

Yes the 150-450 is f5.6, I fixed the typo. Hopefully it's sharp wide open and speedy AF (and it drops in price for us poor bastards in AUS :( being $3000 at launch...)

With the K-3 the autofocus is still disappointing. It is too slow for most bird in flight opportunities to get tack sharp images. I'm going to upgrade to the 150-450 just so I can shoot at f5.6 (150-500 requires you to shoot at f8 or f10 to get sharp shots) and to have better AF.

Just a quick question for the 500 f4.5 and 560 f5.6 shooters, do you ever find that the minimum focus distance is limiting? The sigma 500 f4.5 is 4 metres and the 560mm is 5.6 metres, I mean I get annoyed with my 150-500 focusing at 2.2m. Do you use extension tubes when up close? Also what is the IQ like with the Pentax 1.4 TC and does it let you focus closer? Im getting a job soon so I may be able to treat myself to more extravagant gear if I get good hours :D

Also here is a chestnut breasted manikin from today and my green tree Python.

Found this on youtube this morning. To me this is an excellent product video and highlights the things that people that would buy this sort of camera would want (built in wifi and share to social media instantly).

To me they look a bit pixelated more than soft but I'm just looking at the forum post instead of the Adobe programme version.

At my friends school they have k50's for the students to use for their media assignments and to hire. They also had a competition last year where one student won a k50 bundle. Pentax isn't that rare here in Australia

I'm also only going to consider it if it's sharp wide open at 450mm, seeing as the launch price is well over that of the 150-500. What price is the 560 going for these days?

un-surprisingly more amazing shots from you guys. I'm sure everyone is excited about the new 150-450 and how it performs as am I.
Here a couple more shots of the juvenile kingfishers that I didn't put up to start with, and a pair of very friendly Bush Stone-Curlew's

In my opinion the increased price of the 150-400 over the sigma 150-500 is justified 1) by being fully weather sealed and 2) by being f5.6 at 450mm. The 150-500 is f6.3 from 300mm. Being a wider aperture lens and a bit smaller, it should also be faster at focusing which is a 3rd advantage. I might upgrade to it from my 150-500 when it drops in price.

Sigma 150-500 - should I buy one?

On the topic of using monopods and tripods i think it depends on the person, situation and subject. For example, i if i go to Oxley creek (open bush area with lots of room to move around) i may take the monopod for the bigger birds. But because its quite bright and the small birds are usually on the ground and moving fast, a monopod or tripod is going to slow your movement down way to much. However if im going to somewhere like a rainforest and im shooting birds like a casowary where they generally move slowly and its dark and you need slower shutter speed, then the monopod will be necesary ( its a completely different story with fast moving small birds near to you when you need to use a external flash and fast shutter speed) When using with the monopod on still birds at 500mm.

Thanks crewl1. The raptor holding the fish (I think it might actually be a squid) is a whistling kite. They are pretty much everywhere in Australia and also eat pretty much every thing, however usually fish or rodents at sugar cane farms. The second eagle with the white head is a Brahminy kite. They are mainly water raptors but will still eat carrion and rodents, they are also usually very shy. The next image is of a Crested Tern which are quite common in breeding groups but they dont stay long. They grey bird flying is a Channel Billed Cuckoo, they are one of my favourites with their red eyes and barred tails. They are also quite large.last one is a noisy friar bird which are very common but also shy. They almost look like a minature vulture with the bald head and a funny bomp on their nose.

Hope this helps :)
