Thanks for the responses. I'm usually using kodak tri-x, not bulk loaded. I'm starting to think I'm doing something stupid without realizing it. One thought I had this morning that hadn't occurred to me before is I might not be waiting long enough after taking it out of the freezer, or maybe because it's below zero here in wisconsin right now. I can't remember every instance this has happened so it's hard to say. I had the problem with velvia a few times, but not lately.
It might be cold film, less willing to bend?
Thanks for your interest. I've reached a place where I'm no longer certain it's the camera's fault. I usually blame the camera, then the meter, then the film, and finally realize I'm doing something incredibly thoughtless.

This is exactly what I do. Maybe I have a dud but I've tried loading it every which way and the film pops out of the take up spool, no matter what I do, if I stroke the film advance too quickly.

On garythesnail's recommendation I actually bought on one about an hour ago, haha. I can't wait to try it out. I can live with the ME's take up spool I guess, if I remember to be careful, but who knows, maybe I'll love the P30t!

The film pressure plate is fine. I've checked over the camera and everything is as it should be.

Thanks for all the advice in this tread!
The problem I'm having is even if I load correctly and take 20 exposures, the film sometimes pops out if I stroke the advance lever too quickly! It isn't a huge problem, it maybe happens every 5th or 6th roll, especially if i'm trying to take exposure after exposure quickly. I'm thinking about getting a p30t to see if I like it. I really love the ME; I'm thinking about busting up a broken k1000 and trying to switch out the take up spool... I'll pull both out tonight and do some measuring.

The pentax ME has those strange white sticks. It annoys me so much I think I want to get a different aperture priority camera that's also compact. I was thinking about the MV, MV1 or the MG. Do any of you know if these have the same take up spool? Are there other options I'm not considering? Thanks.

I got an ME, already have a k1000 and k-30. I've been collecting old k-mount lenses for a while and I'm wondering how advanced the lenses can get before they won't work on my ME. I'm worried about the ME's mirror hitting the FA lenses. I'm also thinking about FA*, D FA lenses with aperture rings.
If this sounds crazy let me know if I should just get DA Limited lenses for the DSLR and just treat them like different systems. Any advice?

Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking about showing them next to the painting. There are maybe 3 good shots, I'll have to take more. I took about 80 and got 3. Oh well. Thanks.

aperture and shutter speed were actually f/7.1 and 1/40 sec. I'm normally a painter; I've been shooting film for a while but the is one of my first ventures into digital. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and I painted this painting, there's a lot of heft to the paint/other material I used, it isn't a painting trick or anything. Thanks for looking!
