Just a quick comment on the moire in the cactus shot. Assuming that real-world moire is fairly rare, there's a relatively simple solution for overcoming it. (see attached)

Steps:
  1. open in Photoshop

  2. add blank layer above image

  3. paint over the affected area (in this case, with green)

  4. change blending mode of layer to "color"

Sorry to hear about your situation… I once used an application called photorescue to recover an entire 40-GB hard drive (it was only designed for memory cards). It seems like you've exhausted your options, but if not, perhaps you should give that one a try.

Suggestions for next lens purchase :)

I have two alternate suggestions for you:
  • Pentax D-FA 100mm f/2.8 Macro

  • Pentax DA 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 Fish-Eye

It would be hard for me to overstate the appreciation I have for the 100mm macro. I have the earlier version (non-WR), and absolutely love it. In your case, it gives you 2 things you don't have—macro, and a fixed telephoto. I bought it for the macro capability, but I've found it to be so much more than that; I hardly use it for macro at all anymore. I love it so much that my next planned purchase is the WR version—simply because I get excited about having a shiny new copy of that lens. (And also because I've dropped mine several times—although it still works flawlessly). It is especially fantastic for portraits—the best of all my lenses. The length is just long enough to allow you to get candid shots without your subject necessarily noticing you, etc.

As for the Fisheye—I've found it to be a delightful surprise, and use it far more than I anticipated. Some may be inclined to think of a fisheye as a gimmicky lens—and I guess it can be (which isn't necessarily an invalid reason to use one, if that's what you're after). However, at 17mm, it also makes for a really useful wide-angle lens—albeit with some barrel distortion. If that bothers you, you can reconcile a lot of it via the lens correction tools in Lightroom 3 (or elsewhere, I suppose). To be clear—it's not an ideal landscape lens or anything, but it's absolutely brilliant in certain situations (e.g. holding your camera over your head at an event and having confidence that you're going to get some interesting shots of everyone there without having to worry too much about precise aiming (because it covers such a big area).
