Nesster, it seems you fail to see the main difference between health care and american football.
The fact is that US is the country in the world that spends more (either in % of GDP and in USD per capita) in health care without great results. In Portugal where we have a national health system (somewhat based in the UK's NHS) we spend one third of what US spends with similar, and sometimes even better, results. (disclaimer: it is so extremely complicated to compare health systems that WHO stopped doing it's ranking)
Anyone that as studied health economics knows that the reason is that the health market is not ruled by economics market laws. There are way to many failures in the information parity for the player to act knowledgeably. The doctor knows what the patient problem is and the patient doesn't while not knowing how much the patient is willing to pay. That's why there is need for the agency function regulated by and independent party (the state).
Health care is a very complex market. For example: why should you pay for the treatment of someone else's TB? Easy, you don't want to get infected too. And why should you pay for cancer treatment for your neighbor? It's called risk sharing, no one can be sure that he won't have cancer but the treatments are so expensive that will ruin most family's economies but sharing risk means that will cost very little to each one.
Private insurances are great until you get really sick and need spend huge amounts of money. If you break a leg or need new glasses all is fine but treatment of hemophilia can cost millions of dollars over the life time of a patient, specially while they are kids. Should one let the kids die? What if they where your kids?
It is funny when people hide behind politics to give opinions when they haven't studied the question deep enough. Most of the critics of "obamacare" have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. (well, I guess most of defenders don't know either)
Please don't take it from me, go look at WHO and OECD data! It is all there.
Regards,
Luis
