I like the image, the focus on the foot and hand is an intriguing touch. The black and white is a nice touch as well. Closing down the aperture by a step or two would of brought baby's eye into focus a bit more. To me at least, baby's interaction is part of the picture story.

Thanks for posting.

As to questions about oil quantity and quality. Car does not seem to be 'making' oil, and appears to be normal in consistency. I will however as suggested be sure to check it when change the oil. (Which I will do once I complete this repair.)

Had very slowly been loosing antifreeze from the reservoir over some time, but could always see a slight leak on the exterior of the intake. I should of looked into earlier, I know... but never got to it. Now I have to.

Over the years I have amassed a decent collection of tools, which includes torque wrenches. Suggesting it is great advise though.

I have no intention of re-using any gaskets.

The worst part of this is having to do this in an unheated garage, at sub zero temperatures.

[quote\]By the way, did you see any white smoke (more than the usual exhaust fog at -25C) coming out of the exhaust? That would be a sign that coolant got into the exhaust either by getting by the head gasket or through a crack in the head. My other suggestion is to drain the oil from the crankcase and look for any sign of coolant getting in the crankcase. That's also a sign of serious damage, and if the motor has been run for several minutes with coolant in the oil, a crankshaft grind and new bearings might be in order. You can always pull off a main and rod bearing cap and look for gumming up at the oil holes, or scoring on the journal or bearing.[/quote]

Didn't notice any abnormal exhaust (but wasn't looking specifically for it.) I had pulled the dipstick, and oil looked normal. Anti-freeze looked ok as well. Will drain and double check oil as you suggest.
Will I be able to access the main and rod bearing caps when I remove the lower intake? Or, does that mean removing the head(s) as well?
The engine did not overheat, and seems to have only lost the antifreeze that was in the overflow tank. Radiator stayed full. I hope this bodes well for me.

I can certainly do a 'Google' search, but any chance you'd have the torque values and sequence for both upper and lower manifold?

Had not considered (or have not yet required) a torch, but I can understand where it would be useful. Anything specific I should be looking for if I buy one?

I'd always assumed (a dangerous habit, I know) that 'ALLDATA' was exclusive to professional mechanics. I'll look into this further.

Been looking at YouTube myself, and have found some good videos. There's a variety of 'methods' out there. Make is a challenge to discern the correct one.

Had a nasty surprise a few days ago. Been out and about with the car, upon arriving at home 'check engine light' came on. Opened hood to find coolant in places it's not supposed to be. Upon inspection have deduced that I have and intake manifold leak. (I can see the anti-freeze spewing out from that area. I have a garage full of tools, and an empty wallet so will have to tackle this myself. Of course, it has to happen when it -25C out.

It's an 04 Buick LeSabre, 3800 series 2 v6. Since I'll be at it, will replace both upper and lower intakes. Any mechanics, or 'mechanically gifted' individuals out there with words of wisdom? My mechanical abilities are decent, but it's not my main source of expertise.

I'm not an 'old man'..yet (although closer to 50 than 45). I can attest to the 'grumpy' part. It would of been remiss on my part to not apologize. That said, I certainly don't have hard feeling regarding this, and am grateful for your response.

I realize I'm one of the new folks to this forum. As such, I was unawares that my comment would be the cause of irritation. I am sorry to have caused this, but it was not at all my intention. In the future I will be more diligent in my choice of words. It was never my intention to be off-putting in any of the comment I posted. Again...sorry about that.

As much as we have lots of colour during the summer months....here's what I get to look at from about early November to mid March. I'd be willing to experience your California sun right about now, 'drab' beaches and all.. :D.

Great post, and stunning images. If I may, I'd like to add a few.

First picture was taken with M 28 2.8. Considering the .4 sec shutter speed, I think it turned out ok. Second is my M 135 3.5.

Thanks rekrabm.

This was taken at an annual 'Threshermens' Reunion' at the Manitoba Agricultural Museum. A weekend once a year when all the big toys (aka Steam tractors, antique gas tractors, and various farm equipment etc.) are taken out of their sheds, and demonstrated. I'm not quite old enough to say it brings back fond memories, but I enjoy attending.

As to your suggestions of composition, I need to get out of the 'hey look, a combine, 'snap'...mentality of taking pictures. I tend to not look beyond the subject I'm taking pictures of, and often miss things, such as the gentleman in the picture. Of course, that can all be cropped out.

As for re-positioning to include a bit more of the tractors to the left of the combine. That would lend itself to the image nicely. I wouldn't want to move over too far, and lose the three-quarter view of the comine when doing this however.

Thanks for the comments.

I like both images. A comment about the first, If I may. I realize you were shooting at 70 mm, but I think a wider angle of view would of been good here. Or, if it was possible, a slight shift in the composition. Would be nice to see the source of the reflection as well. (Trees I assume?). The colour contrast of the reflection off the water compared to the surrounding foilage is eye catching.

As for the second image. To my eyes, the black and white lends itself well to the image. Helps to convey the 'simpler times' mood that the image conveys (to me).

Was July 18, 2013. Extremely fast moving storm cell went over our house. Me, being foolish fellow I am, decided to go out and take some pictures. So, with K5 and M28, 2.8 in hand...

8:59 pm...my first shot...facing west on road in front of house. Second and third pictures (of the same storm), were a mere minute apart. Cloud you see developed southwest (about a mile) from the house...and swung into the northeast of the house, about a mile. I'd never seen anything like it before.

Considering the circumstances at the time, I was rather hurried, and didn't concern myself with being technically perfect.

I like the adjustments you made. I'm finding my eyes drawn to the crux of the scene easier than with my rendition. The extra punch of the orange of the tractor, along with crisper details of the wall draw ones eyes there. Would there be a way to keep the background toned back a bit? To my eyes at least that would benefit the image.

That said, I'm very much appreciating the varied comments, and critique.

I enjoy using my 'm' lenses, for which the camera does not record f-stop values.
As for metering, I can't quite remember if the 'm' lenses handicap the camera to 'center weighted' or 'spot' metering. (Someone help me here, please.) That said, I used the 'green button' metering method. Should I of metered to something specific within the shot?

Hello all.

Very interested to hear your critique regarding the attached image. I have a strong bent for shooting jpeg. (Which I realize handicaps any post processing.)

As for the image. It was an overcast winter day. Wandered around my yard taking random shots. Thought the contrasting orange in the midst of the drab things surrounding it looked interesting.

When taking pictures, I tend to lean towards a more natural colour tone, which I was trying to achieve when I took this shot.

Would love to 'hear' from the group.

Thanks.
Gord.

..from the (not quite yet) great white north.

Normally there's be a good amount of snow on the ground...and sub zero temperatures. Forecast is calling for spring-like temps. over the next few days. Enough about the weather....

Glad to aboard this forum. Although I've been handling a camera of sorts for say, about 30 + years...I find I defer to others opinions readily. I'm finding the wealth of knowledge on this site refreshing, and well worth the reading.

I've been a Pentax user for about 20 years now. Started with an MZ7 film camera and an FA28-40 f4 lens. Later added a (cheap) Sigma 70-210. My first digital camera came up as a result of a good salesman. Was at a camera store, looking for a digital camera. Had tunnel vision and was set on either a Nikon or Canon. After some discussion of my needs (and current kit at the time) said salesman referred me to the K100D. Thus started my DSLR journey.

Since the K100 I"ve had K10D, and now own a K5. The K100 is still in the house, being used by my daugher. K10 was sold.Have a small collection of inexpensive manual Pentax lenses. (Which I enjoy using.) Also have a few autofocus. More details to follow in future posts.

Like I stated earlier. Glad to be part of this site. Just a brief story of my camera journey.
