K3-II Severe Overexposure

So some terrible news. I took the camera to a local repair shop and it had irrecoverable corrosion damage, presumably from salt water exposure. In retrospect there was some white material coming out from some connections recently. The camera cannot be repaired and is a total loss!

I've been trying to figure out where the saltwater came from. I took a 4 day trip to the coast about 6 months ago but certainly didn't drop it in the ocean or anything. Not all my lenses are weather sealed. I often carry the camera on the shoulder strap of my backpack with a Capture Clip. I don't know if salt from sweat might get in the camera.

Mostly I'm flabbergasted and devastated that my camera is toast. I don't even know how I could prevent this from happening again. This is my third Pentax body in 10 years and I've never had troubles. This makes me want to only buy and use weather sealed lenses. :( :( :(

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I fired it up again today and it now it has gotten even worse overexposing by about 5 stops. Images are coming out essentially white. Again, it works fine in live view and logically might be a problem with the light meter in the prism though I don't know what to do about that other than send it in. Same thing happens wide open and I tested it on a third lens too. Time for a visit to the repair shop I think.

I've had my K3-ii for a little over a year and have been shooting Pentax for around 10 years.

Today I had some shots come out about 2 stops overexposed with no clear explanation. Any ideas?

I tried program, Tv, Av, TAv, and green modes with the same result. I switched between all 3 metering modes with the same result. I double checked exposure compensation and ISO settings. I verified that AE-L was not on and that link AE to AF was disabled as well as auto exposure compensation. I also reset the camera to factory settings. I was using a new rented lens at the time so I switched to another lens to ensure it wasn't a problem with stuck aperture blades. These were all in single shot modes so no exposure bracketing or anything.

Interestingly it meters just fine in live view shooting the exact same scene. Switching back to any other mode will again lead to an overexposed shot by about 2 stops. Dialing in about -2 EV exposure compensation gives a normal image.

Anything else I'm missing or do I need to send this in for servicing? Thanks for looking.

I think you may be right about it being depend on conditions and having lots of stuff just behind the subject. Here's another shot from yesterday that's creamy smooth with lots of space behind the swallow.

Here's a mink from this afternoon from the DA* 300mm. Does anyone else have trouble with "nervous" bokeh like this? Perhaps it's my UV filter. It's a nice Hoya Pro but I've never done anyone testing with it.

My first copy of that lens had atrocious front focus. Fortunately the retailer was happy to swap it out for another copy that was spot on for my body.

Thanks! I'd never been successful in catching one in flight. Partly because I hadn't refined the technique and partly because the K10D's continuous AF was rather lacking. Now with a K7, some practice, and some time spent observing GBH behavior, I'm getting some pleasing results.

I found I need to keep AF set to continuous and be focused on the bird while he's wading/fishing. I keep the AF point on center or have my thumb ready to flip it to auto select. They herons seem to crouch, so to speak, as they get ready to spring and take off. Then it's panning and 5 fps and hoping something comes of it :).

I love shooting great blue herons. Large, easy to find, and very photogenic creatures. With the DA* 300 from this weekend's camping trip:

Sigma 24-70 2.8 EX DG

Asking Price
$325 Reduced to $300

Item Location
Ohio

Item Description
I've had this lens for about a year and it's been good to me. I've been missing the wide end so I'm moving to a 17-50 2.8 instead. The lens also has front focus on my K-7 while it was spot on with my K10D. Correctable with in-camera AF adjustment. It performs well wide open and is very solidly built. The lens is is great shape with no defects on the glass. Body of the lens looks great too, just a little wear on the zoom ring.

Includes hood, both caps and I'll throw in the Tamron front cap I bought for it since it has the nice pinch release.

Kenko 1.5x Pz-AF TC SOLD

Asking Price
$100

Item Description
I picked this up as New Old Stock from the guy who regularly sells them here. I just haven't used it much with my DA* 300mm. It does work with SDM, but the AF isn't that great and I'm not much for MF. Otherwise in great shape since it's gone unused! Includes both caps and original box.

I used to have the A 50mm but I never used it because I'm terrible at MF, especially when I'm using the lens in low light. I now have an F 50mm f/1.7 and the AF makes a world of difference for me. I picked up a gently loved copy for about $100.

Has anyone here managed to get anything good out of the DA* 300mm with the Kenko 1.5x TC? I bought the TC along with my 300mm and I've been disappointed every time I've put it on the camera. AF is pretty much nonexistent and I do manage to get off a good shot, it seems the IQ suffers dramatically. I haven't done any side by side comparisons with and without the TC, but the lack of AF alone pretty much kills it for me. Just wondering if I'm missing anything...

TC Advice

I've got a DA* 300mm f/4 and a Kenko 1.5x TC. Overall, I've been disappointed with the TC. Unlike you, I just can't get by without AF. The AF is rather aggravating to use and MF ends up being easier for me. I don't have side by side comparison shots for you, but the TC shots did seem to lose sharpness and contrast. Perhaps I could get better results if I worked at learning how to best use the TC, but for now it's mostly stayed at home and I've opted to crop my 300mm shots.

You might have better luck with AF with a 2.8 lens compared to my one stop slower f/4, but if you already prefer MF that may not matter much to you.

What applications are you considering for the TC?

All shot at f/4. What you see in the bobcat shot is a chainlink fence behind him, hence the really weird look. The pronghorn have a rock wall in the background near the top. The bear is shot through thick, ugly, dirty glass. So maybe all that contributes to the less than ideal bokeh?
