I am not fully sure of Pentax "consumer" dslrs ... I mean, just be honest and look at the K-500. it's trapped in between two worlds. Is not as capable as the K50 (lack of WR, focusing viewfinder dots, etc) so you know its trying to be a consumer/cheaper DSLR. But then again, the controls and interface are trying to be a prosumer DSLR. What I am trying to say is that the k-500 will make neither the "consumer" or "prosumer" happy.
If pentax is planning in releasing a consumer dslr they need to revise the interface. My parents have a d3200 and the "guide" mode is just brilliant for someone that does not want to put time or effort in learning technical aspects (like my parents). Having said that, I LOVE the interface of my K-30 (because I do want to learn the technical aspects).
In reality, i think what they need to do is take the k-50's or even k-30s body and offer it at $499 and get rid of their K-500. Look what apple does with their ipads and iphones... They keep the low end/old model as a step down/cheaper version.
Now they're offering the ipad air and ipad 2 for example.
Heck, Pentax could just offer :
Pentax K-3 FF For the PRO
Pentax K-3 For the enthusiast that likes the new stuff
Pentax k-5ii/iis For the connoisseur
Pentax K-50 for the beginners/amateurs
I dont see the problem in thinking of Pentax as a premium brand (no cheap build camera like Canon)

I have the A 1.7 and the DA 1.8. I got my A1.7 off ebay in like new condition for about $60. I think that is the main and realistic advantage of this lens (Price).
When I started like 6 months ago, I did not want to start throwing lot money away in stuff I was not going to use. So I go some Pentax-A lenses (50mm, 28mm) for cheap. Note that teh F and FA versions of these lenses run for $250-$300+.
I instantly got in love with my Pentax-A 50mm 1.7. The focal lens was just perfect for what I was doing. My copy is really sharp, but I got a love-hate relationship with manual focus. So I got the DA about 1.5 weeks ago.
I almost bought a copy of an F 50, but it was like $300... There is an special in henrys.ca for the DA50 $169... I got that one shipped and taxes included for about $185. You might want to grab the amazon.com deal mentioned above.
Yes it has a plastic mount (I was extremely skeptical about this) but its just fine. and I feel right now having the autofocus is worth it. Yes, the F and FA might be build like tanks, but when I compare the build quality of my DA to my A (which is metal), I am not sure if I would pay more for a Pentax-F just to have metal mount. After all, NONE of these lenses are WR or even close to be. So all of them will basically get you to the exact same place.
But that is just me, if you feel you're going to be dropping your lenses in the floor, or you tend to break your gadgets, I would say then pay the premium for the F, otherwise save yourself the $100 and get a DA50.

Thanks for your comments. One thing to clarify however, I am not planning on making my salary out of this. For example, if I can make 1,000 in a whole year (I wish) to buy a new lens, body etc, that would be more than perfect.
I am not really planning to make a living out of it. I know life can turn around at any moment. But as I said, IF i can make some money for lenses, or flashes or bodies. great. Not sure why you see a problem in that.
Sounds like stock photography might be more work than what i thought. In reality, I was thinking I was going to upload my 10,000 off my HDD and see what happened. But sounds like is not that easy.
That sounds like a good idea. I mean, i might not just go to a athlete's club, but "volunteering" to take pictures might actually open some doors like it did for you.

Forum members, sitting here at home I was just thinking about ways to justify buying gear :) One of the main things stopping me is that, in reality, I am only doing photography for fun/hobbie and money I put in photography does not necessarily makes its way back to my pocket.
I was thinking, what are some ways I can make some money (just enough to pay for gear every now and then)?
I was checking online and among all options (like selling your prints in art galleries, etc) I saw one compelling option:
- selling your pictures in stock picture sites like fotolia.com among others
So the question is:
1- Is this realistic? I mean, I know there are 1,000,000 variables, but are there any forum members getting some money by doing this? what is your experience?

can you select the focus point with the Rokinon?
One problem I found with my K-30 is that when using my A 50 1.7, I have to focus using the center focus point only. I cannot move it. However, I just found out That when using the DA 50 1.8 I can move it.
How is the rokinon in this respect?
Do you have to select the focal length every time?

well... The fact is that you're wrong. You dont have to "need" these three aspects to like pentax. For example:
*I do appreciate the build quality, otherwise I would have jumped to a canon 70d by now just on features alone (not to mention more cheaper options of lenses like the sigma 18-35mm already available for canon)
*I do appreciate camera layout of pentax (not on your list, but is a BIGGIE for me and a clear differentiator for pentax brand)
*I don't mind portability. I dont go up and down with 20lbs of gear so is not important for ME. I know it is for other people, but not ME or many people that has said the same.
*I like having WR readily available even on the kit lens (if you have the DA WR of course) for cheap. (in other brands you need top tier products to get WR)
having said that, i do still like pentax and most likely my next camera will be pentax too based on my first two points alone. So I am not sure why you say I (or any other of the members saying that Sigma lens makes more sense) don't like pentax for the right reasons.
In my original post I was asking what is the market for this lens... It seems that hikers might see a benefit for this (for example) especially if you're just taking pictures outdoors.

I am looking to gift a big family photo to my parents in law. I am thinking about the metal one from adoramapix. something like the 16x24 or larger.
I was wondering, a Picture taken with my K-30, using DA 50mm 1.8 at around f4, ISO 100... How big can I go?
side question:
If you have ordered the metal prints from adoramapix, is it worth it? any other vendor recommendation for metal prints?
Thanks!

yeah... what if you consider that the FA is f/1.8...? and considering is a variable aperture, by the time you get to 31mm you'll be looking into f/3.x

Thats what i was saying. The tamrom 17-50 (for example) is faster and has wider range of FL. yes is a bit larger but is less than half the price for only an extra 5 ounces in weight (10.3oz Vs 15.5oz on the tamrom)!!!!, That's why is just hard for me to think who can justify buying this new 20-40mm. That's why I asked around to see if there is actually anybody that see and actual market for this :)
I think what I am trying to say is that this new lens by pentax is not the fastest, might not be the sharpest, it has a limiting FL range, is "small and light" but then is $1000... what would we pay the premium for?

I wanted to start this thread as pentax has just made official the release of the new HD PENTAX DA 20-40mm F2.8 - 4 Limited DC WR. The MSRP is $1000!
I feel that at this price tag, for me, sounds too expensive. Considering that the sigma is $799.
Yes the pentax one most likely have superb image quality. However the sigma is no slouch. Everybody that has reviewed this lens pretty much kneels down to it.
Yes the pentax is WR
Yes the pentax is smaller/lighter. Based on what you want, this might be deal breaker
Yes the Pentax is much slower. At 35mm you should expect this lens to go to f4.
Yes the sigma only goes to 35mm while the pentax goes to 40mm. But the sigma goes down to 18mm while the pentax only goes to 20. all in all, there is a difference of 3mm in the range of the lenses (for me, i feel is not that much)
Given that is variable aperture, limited focal length (20-40). what is the market for this lens? I assume that a 17-50 2.8 will be way much more versatile than this for half the price! (tamrom's are $500 in amazon)
I know the sigma is "only" 18-35mm but at least you get f1.8!! even you use it or not, you know that stopping down at least to f.2 gives you sharper images...
anyway, im just trying to understand, why would you buy this lens and not the Sigma. it seem to me that the extra weight of the sigma pays off with with 2+ stops (f4 to f1.8) when on the long end.
what will you buy? and why?
