I don't own a KP but I understand it has great image quality and is also a nice compact package. Look into KP.

Nice one!
Did you have motion correction pixel shift in use? To deal with the moving boat...

That is your current "smart function" setting. It is defaulted at the factory to E-dial which changes exposure settings. Try turning the dial on the top right side of the camera and it will change the ISO, most likely.
Look for the S.Fn button on top of the camera. If you press it you can change to another smart selection (of 5 choices) besides E-dial. Do this by turning the rear dial after you press S.Fn.
You can also change what those five choices are as well (by going into the menus).
So if you change it to crop, when you move the dial on top right side of the camera, it will change between crop mode and not crop mode.

Doing lens focus calibration on my 150-450 zoom.
I set the AF mode to select extra small (XS). Then aimed it at the middle cotton bud and pressed the back button AF.
To deal with camera shake I had it on a tripod, of course. It's a good tripod but is a lightweight travel version, so it still has shake when the shutter button gets pushed.
Elimination of shake was done by using electronic shutter and live view. Also, 12 second timer enabled the induced shutter shake to subside on its own. Yes I could have used the iPhone app to trigger the shutter but I figured I had 12 seconds to spare! It seemed to take half of that 12 seconds for the shake to stop. LOL.
I decided to use pixel shift and see how sharp it would be...therefore the only movement in the rig when taking the shot was the sensor moving itself one pixel, three times.
The tripod could handle that!
It looked very good and you can see individual hairs on the cotton bud. Nice. No lens adjust needed, I suppose. Double checked it also using focus peaking mode.
ISO 200, f5.6, 1/5 sec and zoomed out to 450mm |

Wow great luck! Very good shot and handheld, no less!
I had planned many months ago to watch the eclipse in my mother's backyard, with her in Round Rock. RR was not in the center of totality but still would get total for a minute or two.
Well, she got sick and ended up in the hospital. Then I got sick with a cough and I didn't want to go to RR and maybe get her sick.
Plus, the weather forecast was horrible as you know.
So I cancelled my plane ticket....
My sister did watch it from the house in RR. She said as you did that the clouds parted a little bit just at the right time...a gift!
Did you have a lot of traffic out on those little roads at the center of totality??

Thanks for the advice!
I have done more tests. In order to completely eliminate camera shake, I have used the iPhone app to trigger the shutter while in live view.
Furthermore, electronic shutter eliminates even more shake.
Also, I used live view to very carefully focus whereas I used focus peaking before. The results were much better.
However, I now believe the lens may be decentered. There is lack of sharpness on the right side of the frame more so than the left side....even when stopping down.
Since I'm shooting with crop sensor, I should have really no issues with sides/corners, should I, even if the lens has some?
So I may send the lens back and try another one....

I have some night shots I will add to the folder.
For the kitchen shots, I used a tripod. Also I used mirror-up mode and 2 second timer. So the first shutter button would move the mirror up and the second press would start a 2 second timer. In this timer mode, the camera automatically deactivates SR.
You can see the aperture information in Flickr on the data to the lower right side.
Thanks for looking. I'm thinking about sending this lens back and asking for another one. I believe B&H gives 30 days. ---------- Post added 04-10-24 at 09:21 AM ----------
I used a tripod and used focus peaking in LV. It should be focus on the knobs on the cabinets along the back wall....or rather the post-it notes just left of center. Can you see how "fuzzy" those post-it notes are? Is that reasonable?
If the lens is this "fuzzy" at f1.4 perhaps it would not be good for astrophotography??? One review of this lens says he could do astro shots but not below f2.8.

Hello all,
I have a new Irix 30mm lens I just received. It's a full frame lens but I use it on my APS-C body.
Irix lenses have impressed me... but this one is little perplexing. Perhaps I just have a bad copy and that is what I need expert opinions about.
It's quite soft wide open at f1.4. At the price point of it I'm wondering what expectation should be.
On crop sensor I didn't expect sharpness issues as much at the sides. What do you think?
Here are five shots. They range from f1.4 up to f4.5. You can see lots of softness and chromatic issues and they all improve after stopping down.
You can zoom in by double clicking inside each photo. TIA!! https://www.flickr.com/gp/89237167@N02/DqZt5695d7
p.s. A know issue with this lens is the camera cannot read the focal length...and I can't seem to enter it manually. Besides that throwing off shake reduction could it explain any of the issues seen?

Just purchased this Irix 30mm. It's equivalent to roughly 50mm on APS-C.
Here I'm just trying it out for the first time using one of my favorite settings which is highlight priority metering. This is SOOC. |

I ordered another Irix lens. It will be my third now. I guess I'm hot for Irix. Their lens coatings give a really vibrant color. They are MF but I don't mind.

I'm going to leave the camera at home and just experience it. I'll be at my mother's house and I don't want to spend time and stress-out on getting the photos...want to be in the moment.

I agree with some who have suggested to bracket a sunset/sunrise shot.
I have done 5-shot bracket on those and it really paid off. Usually the under exposed shots win.

I was perusing the menus on my K-3 mk3 today and I hit the pixel mapping function.
I realized the lens cap was installed. Everything seems fine. I probably should not have done it because I don't notice any issues.
Anyway, should it be aimed at a white background to do this????

Just joining this. Seems like my mk3 experience is that I CAN shoot at higher ISO very comfortably and not get much noise.
Example: Shooting 3200 with my old K-3 was not that good in low light....noisy. However shooting 3200 is not too bad in the newer camera.
I'm wondering if is the post processing. As I understand Pentax puts some noise reduction "baked" into its RAW files and you cannot turn it off. This can cause issues in post processing software, or so I have heard.
I used an old version of LR; however the mk3 is so good that I use a lot of JPGs straight from the camera all the time now.

After a three month repair with Precision Camera (including a trip to Japan) I have my precious 16-50 PLM back with me....and it's a great feeling.

My 16-50 made a trip to Japan and back via precision camera.
So far it seems to be good as new. The broken lens hood was not replaced. I suppose I cannot prove that it was not already damaged prior to the drop damage. Still it's a little annoying.
The final paperwork also says: "ATTENTION: Due to the replacement of certain parts on your unit, it now has a new serial number. You should note this change for future reference."
The damage was not that severe externally. Could they have given me a new or returned lens?
Strange...

Does cleaning the front or back lens surface damage the coating or "wipe it off"?
I use lens paper and lens cleaner but sometimes the unique color of the lens coating looks different (mostly on older SMC).

Thanks. I consulted "the book": The ultimate guide PDF. It linked to a video from Pentax Tips.
They said used AF select. That worked better. Low light is still a problem with the PDAF and I found zooming in live view worked well in those cases (just need to remember electronic shutter too). So it's nice to have options for each use case. This camera is quite a complex machine.

That's what I wanted to confirm with this thread. Thanks.
I will say that even when I select something like "sel xs" setting, I still have issues getting it to work easily in somewhat dimmer lighting conditions.
Could be another setting I need to check.
