PENTAX K-8 ? K-1 Mark II successor... What will it be/look like?

I guess you would just have to read his post.

I also suffered from the weak built, that is common to all the SD-cards,
just guess why there are articles on the net like
"how to save your sd-card that broke off the slider" or
Project Fail: Making a new case for a broken SD card
or something like that.
I dont see a "PRO"-attitude in having to do something like that....

And really, its not so easy to avoid if you put your gear on heavy use,
which I dont do anymore so it leaves me rather cold, what grows out of your discussion.

Nonetheless, I gotta say:

I would prefer CFExpress too. The only option you have as long as you are with SDs... are Sonys super rugged SDs
(SF-G) those are built way more precise than usual and can take a few punches more, they avoid the broke slider problem by avoiding the slider ^^ lol

... but still, the cards get pretty hot and tend to fail more often then XQD or CFExpress of that I am pretty sure,
and the other thing with those cards is:

The thing that makes you fear CFExpress,
will also make you fear these tough sony SD-cards, and it is called PRICE-TAG. :)
because if you want a decent size like 128GB it will set you back a whopping 200 bucks for one card that is destined to fail the same as normal sd-cards if the write amount and cadence is the same.
It is just that their case is physically more durable so they will fail a little less.

And if I have to decide between If I would rather like to pay 200 bucks for a rugged 128GB sony sd-card
or if I would like to have
either a Sandisk CFEXpress with about 128GB for 180 bucks
or a Transcend CFEXpress with 256GB for the same price tag(180 bucks)..

I will most likely pick the Sandisk CFExpress I guess.
Not for the reason that I want to pick up a Sony FS7 video camera for app 8000bucks without optics I want to feed it to, no sir!
...no...
but more likely for the reason that it sets me back 20 bucks less than the SD-card option
and much more because it will not run as hot as the sony SD
when i put it into my Nikon D850 with the battery grip on and shoot a lot of bursts at 9fps.
I mean its good to have the option to use SD-cards also dont get me wrong, I'll give you that,
But if you want me to be honest, I would prefer it if it had 2 XQD/CFExpress card slots instead of only one plus one SD...
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ sorry sir, but its just like that.

Sensor in K1 MkII successor?

hm...
looking at the latest improvments in vector- a.o. A.I. based image upscaling...
ya'll can take a look here:
Adobe Photoshop's 'Super Resolution' Made My Jaw Hit the Floor

...I would say, demanding more than 45MP for a FF follow up to the K-1 is totally ridiculous.
There are so many semi-pros and much more hobbyists among us pentaxians...

My guess is:
Upping the resolution to a point of total ridiculousness,
and for the sake of cost leaving out many other features** that would make everybody have a good time with their camera
will make the K-1(I/II) successor just one thing:
Roadkill.

I would be totally satisfied if the follow up would just offer way more beefier Autofocus, nice video,
a rugged body that doesnt suffer from childish design attempts.
I dont even need battery eating gps or nfc and whatnot
I dont need a dozen multiwheels,
I dont need a touchscreen that may be good fo nothin under harsh outdoor conditions...
I dont need a 1000MP sensor that makes the camera cost like a A1

A memory media option wih one CFExpress and one UHS-II SD slot,
a stills framerate about 14fps,
a large and bright viewfinder,
a moonlander display,
a focus thumbstick in
a rugged chassis that is built like a tank,
a tether shooting plugin for lightroom to it,
would sell a multitude more units

...than just fitting 50MP+ sensor in a body with "feint-features" or do you really believe there is a universe where
a FF Pentax follow up to the K-1romanwhatever with app. 60-80MP would be something else than a
straight DEATHBLOW to the brand and all its fans??

Its not that 50MP could not mean an advantage(especially for pros -- but hey, how much of us do it really at a pro level to make their income on it???)
its just that the biz-leadership-guys at ricoh would long for a pricetag way above 3000 bucks for such a camera that I swear to you.

And you just have to listen closely to all the guys who already say "2000 bucks for a pentax thats specs are a tit below all competitors"
despite the K-3III alone for its viewfinder, new AF and 12fps actually should be worth it... Actually everybody should be blown away but it doesnt seem like.
(and I am pretty sure there will be a lot of bottom-fermented posts of jump-shippers until a plastic fantastic sibling to the K-3III will save the day...)
So what do you think will happen if PENTAX brings a FF follow up with 75MP for about 4000-5000 bucks?

Or do you think the guys in japan will go and say "hey we are having a good time here,
corona crisis is ruining world economics, lets build a 75MP camera for 2000 bucks...
LOL ... in which world should that imagination become reality? pls explain.

My good guess is the 32MP version would keep a lot more people in PENTAX/DSLR-Land than some soggy megapixel dream.

I would even go so far and say a FAST ENOUGH 24-26MP Full Frame in a plastic but rugged body without movable display or any fancy stuff
that is just a joy to shoot and offers tethered shooting...
could sell way more units than your hot megapixel dreamgal of a cam.
I would even spend up to 1600 bucks for such a camera immediately! (that one would not even need to offer multi-res shooting.. no! just pure camera!)

The only thing missing for such a cheap follow up to be a success would be modern affordable 24-70 and 70-200mil FF lenses since the
old caleidoscope tubes will not win ANY popularity contest. and all other lens options for FF despite the 28-105 (why in gods name is this actually not a 28-135?)
are rather expensive.
*or just one affordable 28-300mil (for all i care even a cheap PENTAX rebranded Tamron 28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di VC PZD would save the day)

I think you maybe right choosing pentax. I am still curious about the successor to the K-3II (will it incorporate the AF from the K-1? or even better? etc. etc.)
Ignoring M43 systems, one can say you will still have the best bang for the buck with a Pentax System.
Fuji also still looks interesting, but they would have to handle some problems first to get me.

Actually i thought, that we might see a K-3II successor soon.

I wasnt talking about a FF... Nonetheless, does the price correction for the K-1 and keeping it stable say anything?
At least in europe the flagship DSLRs from pentax are pretty stable with their official price to the very end of their "market-lifetime".
Just sayin... I am also pretty sure that the soonest date we may see a K-1 successor could be 2018 if not 2019. :asleep:

Canoscan 9000f... buy the mark i not the mark ii
(mark ii comes with no special software. but has energy saving... ooo wow!)
mark I comes with silverfast se software that offers pretty much everything you would wish for, but the software is restricted to the one scanner you own AFAIK.

you could also buy the mark II , what would give you no advantages except this energy saving mode....
if you decide for the latter, you may want to buy vuescan instead of silverfast.
Vuescan is multi-platform software (available for the holy trinity -Linux, MAC, Windows.)and not restricted to use only one specific scanner with it I fancy.

both scanners sport 9600x9600dpi scans at 48 bit and come with frames for mid format(6) and 135 negatives.... there even is an APS-film frame available somewhere on the net.

I have one and think its quite easy to use. (bought for app. 180 bucks)

There you go 120MP full frame camera ... ;) Guess the resolution for a mid-format scan.

go.

Actually it is as easy as:
Go and get a Pentax.
(if you dont like to do video with your DSLR!!! - the videos from Pentax never come as smooth as the ones you do with canon gear... that may have something to do with the codec or compression or dunno what; IMHO its visible even if the videos are taken with the same framerate.)

There actually is no problem with lenses, (except that AF drive on most lenses is really slow compared to other makers)... There is so much "legacy" glass available.
And most of that legacy glass, is actually pretty good. (I would only tend to suggest a hobbyist, to buy newer lenses if he needs wide angle glass... That has a technical background.)
There is all that F and FA glass thats pretty good, you even can choose from loads of pretty up to date Sigma glass. From time to time Sigma still releases a new lens for the Pentax mount. ... the 35mm 1.4 Art lens for instance is available for PK-Mount.

you may want a bit till October is over. Maybe you will see a new APS-C Pentax body arriving that fits your needs.

If you dont want to wait, just pick up a K-70...(along with an 18-50 DC WR and a 55-300 WR PLM lens)
Its a real nice camera and those 2 lenses i mentioned dont have fast aperture stops in their pockets for you, but they are focusing pretty fast.(I guess nearly as good as Canon glass) some dealers still may do promotion, then you maybe could pickup a DA 50mm 1.8 for free if you buy the camera new.
And as said before, the 35mm DG Art from Sigma ... you will also get that with a pentax mount.

But if you feel that your compositions are better with FF:
You may want to grab a K-1.

it shoots much faster in crop mode than in FF... (4.5fps - ff and 6.5fps APS-C mode)
The K-1 may not be the blockbuster that it could have been....(They could have charged 2800 for the K-1 and made it nearly the same specs as the D850(4k video, 7fps bursts in FF, it would have been the same demand, if not much much more i guess.)
... but honestly, i am pretty sure the K-1 beats the Canon 6D Mark II in nearly every way.

---------- Post added 09-10-17 at 10:35 AM ----------

BTW. My part thinks, that Wildlife in pentaxland is actually owned by Sigma ... The 50-500 DG OS HSM or the 150-500 DG OS HSM both do a very good job, none of them has actual weather sealing but you will be good with a coat and by popping a rubber-band over the mounting gap when the lens is already mounted.

AF speed in the sigma is a bit better than in the Pentax DFA 150-450. At least according to what i remember(from using the DFA 150-450).(correct me if I am wrong)
and I feel the OS in the SIGMA is doing a much better job on the tele-end than the Body internal SR from Pentax.(no correction needed ... at least for me it works way better and the feeling when framing is a whole other thing with lens-internal OS on tele-lenses.
Despite that PENTAX cameras offer body internal "Shake Reduction", you really will miss that canon "IS" stabilizer when shooting tele on a PENTAX at first (only if you ever rented a 100-400 that incorporated it)its hardly noticable at 300mm, but much more at 400mm and therefore i would suggest you, that you better keep your eye on buying a 50-500 or 150-500 from SIGMA with HSM and OS if you plan on buying a good tele-zoom.
keep in mind that you maybe have to switch off SR before using a stabilized lens on a PENTAX body. ;) otherwise the SR may counteract to what the OS does.
unfortunately lens-stabilizer and body-internal SR dont talk to each other on pentax systems, like they would do on some M43 bodies.

sry... this may sound crazy to some of you, if you remember what i posted until now.(But, ASB being honest is what will take us further... and i dont see my recent postings corrupted by the following.)

If i had to decide, if i would take a Nikon D810 or a Pentax K-1... (actually I am in doubt if DxO has the integrety people think it has.)
Man... i tell you, i would still take the K-1 even if AF-area may be smaller and not as dense as on Nikons.

And i tell you why. I already had the chance to put the K-1 to the test against a Nikon D850...
It did the trick nearly as good as the Nikon D850 ... both had mounted a 24-70 2.8

And despite the fact, that the D850 has the same AF-sensing as the D500/D5 ... its AF seems to perform nearly nowhere the D5/D500...
that may be due to the fact that there is so much data( running through the system whilst it would also have to process AF (sensing AF and EV for every shot)algorithms.

alas, both cameras performed not so good when it came to tracking movement on the Z-axis...(towards and away from the sensor -frontally)
I had set the Nikon D850 to "Dynamic Area"-Mode and the Pentax K-1 to SEL-S(or was it M? ...)
both set on AF-C resp. AF.C

Anyway, the only camera that really is good at that seems to be the Sony A9....
bottomline... if you own Pentax glass: keep it and stop thinkin about Nikon D850, or try it and realize that you will rather buy a used K-1 extra as a backup camera before you jump ship

Only case that it may be wise to jump ship (to D850) is, if you really feel in need for faster bursts with longer shooting in a row..-bigger buffer

and just because someone said, he wouldnt know what the fun-factor is. pls tell it to the marines... since i have written "xxx, xxx, good video - fun factor" u should know, that i meant having good video on board of a DSLR that costs more than 1000 bucks is maybe not needed but it makes fun because if you do video with it, you can really show off the material. Instead of asking yourself why fast moving cars rather seem to jump their way through the frame instead of driving...
(smooth movement is only achieved at a good framerate)

yes, thank you! I feel the very same way.

But since forums are made for talking and the title is very general, I have to say:

Though i would love to buy it, the price tag is a bit heavy...
(keeping in mind no data gets transferred and i think you will loose AF too dont you?)
Keep in mind that Pentax newest tele (that is said of to have the fastest AF drive that was ever seen on a pentax-mount) nearly costs the same.

For those who cant wait to have a pentax K version... maybe a Leitax conversion would do the trick.

That is at least how i managed to get a top 85mm Tilt-Shift Nikon lens to work on my Pentax K-mount cameras.
Since no Pentax T/S with 85mm is on the market...and the mounts are actually like looking in a mirror thats 1.04mm deep...
...I thought changing mounts shouldnt be a big deal, and it was not. (admittedly) a locksmith drilled the offset holes for the screws on the adapter for me...
(The holes that are already drilled in Leitax's conversion mount rings, may not fit EVERY Nikon lens but they fit the most.)
Anyway... if you know a good locksmith or clocksmith ... :) ... all that should not be a problem.

K1 vs A7?

K-1 may win but the A7 has the "attraction factor"

1.)It doesnt look difficult.(even the firmware is close to the simplicity of Pentaxes)
2.)The resolution is lower so it doesnt make LR more laggy than it already is, when filled up with 24MP raws(not everybody can effort the newest PC esp. when your into photography what costs a lot)
3.)A7 - AF seems to be better even if it isnt. (though sony lenses themselves actually are focusing much faster then Pentax glass)
4.)A7 does actually much better video(60p at FullHD instead of 30p or 60i as on K-1
5.)New FE mount FF bodies get pumped out nearly every 6 months (at least it looks like)

I dont like comparing apples to oranges, but I hope you are right regarding the future of the system.

Nonetheless ...
I dont know where Subaru is cool but i am sure this is not an international trend...
... walking all over Europe, you will not see that much Subaru.
Actually the only model, that looks a bit like something and is powerful enough to make people go "Wow!" is the Subaru Impreza but only as a rally model (STI)...

So yes... maybe its the same with pentax ... suddenly ...a bit more value on the stock market and then... nothing.
(Maybe things look different in the US...)
Since you started comparing car brands :) ... again.
I will join and say i would rather buy a Honda Civic (tourer)like most americans and europeans do.
or (only in Europe) the new Citroen C3 Aircross... those are cars that will not win a rally, but still they are sturdy, versatile and good for travelling.

Back to where its cooking:

The K-1 actually isnt that bad. (dunno why critics on certain drawbacks that are 100% justified, always end up in sayin one wants to bash the product or even the brand as a whole...)

IMHO comparing the K-1 to the A7(for instance)the K-1 will win for sure. And i like that it is on the market available as a serious tool for people that really feel the need for FF.
(I also would love to work on FF but not with those specs, nonetheless...>) For doing only studio photography it fullfills your needs to the fullest.

But it doesnt attract consumers as much as the A7 does.

Not that it wouldnt look sexy... if there is any camera on the market that looks like a real camera(despite those wheels and this ridic incy wincy top lcd)
it is the K-1 for sure.

Advantages of the A7 are actually what the most "compulsive" pixelpeepers and MP-fanboys may perceive as its disadvantages.

IMHO, the K-1 doesnt have the attraction factor it would need to make the title the OP chose true in any way.

It may be under the best cameras available on the market specwise(if you dont look to close at its AF system)...
... but it is not would one consider "complaisant" (i hope i chose the right word).. or very attractive to customers...

nor would I choose to immigrate into pentaxland (when i own Canon gear f.i.)where one seriously misses 3rd party support if hes not willing to search for ages for certain accessory.
And for getting more 3rd party support, RICOH would need a blockbuster K-mount camera... and that aint our beloved 36MP DSLR camera for sure. not now.
What makes me think that? ---> Keywords: "Data Amount", "laggy processing","Fun Factor - Good Video"

If you want to go popular, you will need to build popular instead for the loudest (MP-)fans in some forum.

EOL
I cant await the follow up car comparisons...

Yes they could. If a lens is not too wide angle, i guess not too much revision will have to be done.

And, oh yes it would!! At least one unit, since i am really hot after a full-frame capable 35mm thats weather sealed.

Not that i would have bought a K-1 already(I plan ahead...>), but I still feel hope for me, that Ricoh-Imaging once will offer a fast FF DSLR instead of a "pixeldense" one... and the sharpness on such a "D FA 35/2 DC WR HD" will be good across the whole frame on APS-C anyway, if its actually made for a FF sensor...

totally agree... IQ of that lens for sure could not compete with the DA* and it aint fast either.
nonetheless its a lens that makes you smile and the AF speed is good for catching funny or remarkable moment (and that in FOCUS.) ;)
(never experienced hunting on that "little bugger")

And for sure there is no need to argue, if you know your gear, you maybe take the same shot with a slower focusing lens... (but AFAIK both lenses are pretty much the same when focusing... So all this is "just sayin"! Sry, its been quite a while since I handled a 16-50 2.8 but my guts say the 18-50 is focusing a bit faster, correct me if I am wrong.)

And you are also right, that 2mm difference make a huge difference at the wide end.

just sayin, that he may be happy with that lens as a cheap replacement until we see a Double-PLM... (Dont know if hes doing production work or just fun shooting/hobby)
(i am sure RICOH will do something about AF-drive soon... whatever that tech will be called...) version of the DA* 16-50 2.8 ... just my 2 cents.

pic below was shot with the aformentioned lens (18-50 DC WR) (mounted on an older K-3 body)
at 30mm with the widest aperture possible at that length(F:4,5) for the 15th of a second(1/15s) - ISO 3200
(as mentioned in my review of the lens ... with harsh light coming from the left and WITHOUT a lenshood.)

Despite what others might say, i would rate the HD Pentax-DA 18-50mm F4-5.6 DC WR RE the best bang for the buck thing.
(no fast aperture -but is that really important? That is for you to decide...according to what you need it for.)

AF speed is really quick unlike on other very expensive lenses.
It is as compact as can get.
Sharpness is also excellent, but maybe i am just lucky and have an extraordinary good copy of this lens.

And pls, use the original lens-hood for achieving the best results.

Exactly!
Thats why I vote for the 28-300 Idea. (A modern silent-high-speed-driven 28-300mm, that is also weathersealed will find its buyers for sure.)
Easy to make,
and will sell like hotcake i guess.

I also have a copy of the old Tamron version... already performs very good for a zoom that reaches out from 28mm up to 300mm focal length.(at least my copy does)
