K1 Video Mode - What is the Auto Tracking/Framing doing?
Posted By richmondthefish

Yes it's very limited amount of tracking. Basically if you wanted to mimic the look of handheld footage this actually doesn't do a bad job at all. Thats why I was curious what the heck this is called or why I can't find info on it. I really curious is this in the K3 4k video for example? Some people go out of there way to mimic video looking like it is handheld in post so it's pretty neat this can shift around from a camera thats pretty archaic in video features.

Are you able to reproduce it from my settings?

I don't think it can be shake reduction because it doesn't start moving until a person gets into frame. I was looking at the sample from SR and this is different.

So for example K1 is in tripod and I get perfect still video. With the K1 still on the tripod as soon as I step into the frame video basic tracks me very slightly as if someone were holding the camera.

Maybe this is what it is on page 51

I'm not a video guy but tried out the Pentax K1 video and one thing that I noticed was the video was doing auto tracking almost like when you see from Sony in auto framing.

You Tube

Not to the degree that Sony does where it's zooming around the entire sensor but when I have the K1 on a tripod I noticed it was auto framing slightly around following me which I wasn't expecting(using a 43mm and 77mm).

I assume since the video isn't using the full width of the sensor it's able to have this slight auto framing out of the red box as an example below which I though was neat.

Does anyone know what that is called in the menu? How do you disable or configure? Is it mentioned here Pentax K-1 Review - Video Mode | PentaxForums.com Reviews

Basically I'm looking for any recommendations on a field monitor for the K1 that I can use in Live View(I have no experience with field monitors so just wanted to check with the Pentax folks).

Basically I would like a field monitor monitor mounted on top of the K1's hot shoe with the HDMI out for the live view while recording video and have the ability to face the subject so they can see themselves.

I was looking at getting the FeelWorld FW759 7". Would this be a decent product to start looking into or does anyone have any recommendations for the K1?

I've found Pixel Shift to be really good in product type photography for pixel peeing but I still haven't been too satisfied with using it for anything else. I've gotten some decent results in landscape but the final image wasn't really better then what I was using without it. It seems to be useless with people even when you try to get the person to be as still as possible with a fast shutter.

B and H had it for $718 back in Feb right before the K1 announcement. I was seriously thinking of getting it but decided against it.

They react to where the demand is. I've ran into people with a Canon DSLR that have never heard of Pentax.

pentax k1, Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Nikon D750 - Google Trends

Compare the interest on Google between the K1 and D750 or Mark 5D 2 and it's like we are talking apples and oranges. I think Pentax should be responible for creating interest to begin with. They need to get professionals using Pentax with lots of Youtube followers and spread the word.

I agree.

I wonder what the K1 sales would be if you removed the Pentax logo, slapped on a Canon one and designed it to fit Canon glass.

If you make money from the camera you either need a top notch service plan like Canon has or you need backup gear. You might want to look into a couple K1 bodies with backup lens if you can't afford two 645Z bodies along with backup lens as well.

I think price is more of an issue than anything. If the 5D mk IV was priced in the range of K1 then I'd say it is a bargain.

Side note I sometimes hear people say they wish Canon was using Sony sensors but I am glad to see another big company using their own sensors. We don't want the entire industry letting Sony just have a monopoly on that.

Good point. It goes to show just how small Pentax is. I mean if you looking at the current rankings on their website for Canon/Nikon/Pentax full frame body only best sellers, the Pentax K1 ranks 8th behind the 5D Mark 4, D750, 5D Mark 3, D810, EOS 6D and Nikon 5D and 5DSR. It just amazes me the 6D and 5D Mark 3 still outsells the K1 despite being much older and the Mark 3 is not cheap by any means.

Digital Cameras & Digital Camera Kits | B&H Photo Video

Do you guys think the best selling listing at B and H is accurate. It's already #1 best selling according to B and H on their website. I don't recall the K1 ever doing well on that list at all. Currently the K1 is on page 4 and even behind the Canon 5DS

Just saw Benjamin Kanarek post a comment in the fstopper section

"Benjamin Kanarek - 3 hours ago [Edited]

I used to be an avid Pentax user and was at one time sponsored by them. In fact we still use the Pentax K3 for most of our video recordings as our Director Frederique Renaut loves the compactness. However, I left Pentax for their endemic AF issues. I was interested in the K1, but after seeing how cluttered the AF points are in the centre, it would be problematic to focus on an eye and reframing the subject, especially as I shoot more often than not at maximum aperture when shooting outdoors. The focus needs to be spot on and refocussing would render the accuracy rather useless. That is why I love the Nikon D800/810's, as I am able to set up the 5/4 crop ratio, which replicates 90% of all of the magazine formats I work for , i.e. VOGUE, BAZAAR, ELLE, etc and get very close to or spot on the part of the face I want to focus on, without having that pesky re-crop issue. I still get 30.2 megapixels with a framing that replicates Medium Format crop ratios."

According to the comments she said "3 drops of rain".

Truth is usually somewhere in the middle in these type of situations. She admits water did get on the camera. Bad situation either way.

Its a reminder that these are high tech gadgets that are delicate.

I think a lot of it comes down to how well K mount glass works on the Sony compared to the K1. Thats not something i've researched. The main reason I got the K1 is because I had K mount glass. If I was building a kit from scratch without any existing glass the Sony would be my #1 choice most likely. The K1 is a very nice camera though.

I don't know how it would be possible to futz around with an iMac RAM install. You lay the imac down, push in the memory compartment button, take the panel off, stick memory in, put panel back in. Not much more complicated than hooking up external backup drives.

The 21" iMac isn't a great buy to be honest. If you were to drop say $2100 on a loaded iMac you're getting screwed on a couple fronts.

-The memory since they are charging $200 to upgrade you up to 16GB. The 27" one is user accessible and easy as heck to install your own memory. Just go on Amazon and grab a $60 16GB ram kit and then your iMac is going to have 24GB(which is overkill usually but theres no wall really).
-The video card in the 21" iMac is rubbish. It's an integrated video card which is what you find in a Mac laptop. The 27" has a dedicated video card and much more powerful.
-27" has a faster CPU
-27" screen is probably worth at least $1500 alone.

21.5-inch iMac with Retina 4K display
3.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz
16GB
256GB Flash Storage
Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200
$2,099.00

27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display
4.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.2GHz
24GB (add in 16 GB after market + the 8GB it comes with)
256GB Flash Storage
AMD Radeon R9 M390 with 2GB video memory
$2,399.00 + $60 aftermarket 16GB ram = $2460

$360 dollar difference for a computer thats much better(bigger screen, more memory, faster cpu, much faster video card).

Nah, Windows 7 ends 2020 so must likely Corps are will go to Windows 10 Enterprise and that will buy them time until 2025. Last I read Windows 10 was the last numbered version and they are going to start releasing more frequent releases like Apple. If large corporate computer environments are anything past 2025 like now its going to be a nightmare with more frequent major updates.

Yep that was the exact same timeline as my company for Windows 7. The amount of testing that goes into these upgrades is a nightmare. I think if large companies can survive with Windows 7 so can my old Sony Vaio. No upgrade for me. Still 3.5 years until extended support is done.

I finished reading Steve Huff's review on it. I get everything about the camera expect taking the LCD out. You want to simplify the camera? Perfect... I get it.

Honestly what is the real benefit on taking out the rear LCD? Steve was mention the benefit was it forced him not to chimp his pics which is odd since you don't have to chimp with a LCD. It's like Leica coming out with a camera that only accepts 500MB cards and each of these cards has an a special ISO so your forced to slow down.

If you got into a time machine and told someone 15 years ago that you could stick an LCD on the back of their Leica and they could get actual real time feedback people would lose their minds on how useful that would be. It just seems like a very cliche way to try and be fresh in 2016 to be get rid of something like that.

Today is the last day for the free upgrade. Im posting this from a 6 year old Sony Vaio with Win 7. Im tempted to upgrade but it's going to brick some of the software.

Side note does anyone work for a sizable company that is on Windows 10 already? My company is very behind with Windows releases. Windows 10 would even be considered for rolling out to users for another few years.
