Recommendation for filters

Hi everyone,

I currently have several interchangeable lens cameras, including a Nikon D70, Pentax K-r and Olympus OM-D EM-5 mark ii.

I am looking at getting some filters, mainly for use with landscape photography. The ones I would be looking at would be ND grads and an ND filter.

Are there any slot in filters which I could use with all three cameras and could anyone recommend some.

I have been looking at various systems including the lee seven5 system. The problem with this is it would be too small to use with my other cameras and I don't want to have to buy several different systems.

Are the cheaper filters like the Cokin worth it, as I have heard a lot about colour casts with them which has made me a bit skeptical.

I'm on a budget so I'm not looking to spend a massive amount. Having said that to avoid significant degradation of the image i would be willing to pay a bit more.

Thanks.

That seems like a good plan. I largely use the 8-16mm for the insides of churches/ cathedrals etc. I've not tried the 5-15mm yet but will see if I can get the same types of shots before I go!

Thanks. I am going to Belgium in October and am just taking hand luggage so was hoping I could take the Q10 and a few lenses to make up a decent kit. I have a Sigma 8-16mm and just don't think I would manage without something similar!

You are right about the larger formats being better but it would be a compromise for not having to take a c.500g lens!

Hi

Is there anything available which would be a wide lens on the Pentax Q10? I currently have a K-r and when I go on trips I want to be able to take the Q with roughly similar lenses instead.

I see there is a Q wide zoom but it is way out of my price range. As far as I can see the 110 lenses are all normal - tele lenses on the Q.

Is there anything anyone would recommend?

Thanks

That looks really good but it is wayyy over my budget! Is there anything reliable which is not so expensive or are the two mutually exclusive?

Hi

@ jabI was going to use a RAID array and back it up to a couple of drives. i have several old drives which I would like to be able to copy the data from as well. I was looking at buying an enclosure then a couple of Seagate Barracuda's or something similar.

@ Miguel Not massive tbh. I have filled 600gb on my hard drive but it took a couple of years. I imagine a couple of 2tb drives would do for the next year or so and I'd like to have the space to be able to add another one.

Hi

Hope this is the right sub-forum! I seem to have filled my whole laptop hard drive (mainly with photos) so I'm looking to get an external hard drive to put them on. Ideally I'm looking for an enclosure which can hold 2-4 drives. Does anyone currently use something like this and can you recommend some options?

I'm not looking to spend massive amounts of money. From research you can end up spending £500 ($800) on these. I'm looking more around £150 or so.

Thanks

Cases?

Hi

I know this has been covered before but I'm looking for a smart minimal case for my new Q10. Most of the recommendations I have seen are for several lenses plus Q. I am looking for something very small which looks quite smart. I would like to stay away from fake leather and neoprene.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Thanks for your reply. I'm still pondering which to get. I'd quite like a silver and black or brown one. i also like the white and black one. Unfortunately they aren't available at a reasonable price so will have to go for another colour!

Hi

Which colour Q10/ Q7 does everyone have? Can you post a pic of it?

I was thinking of getting the Q10 in metal brown and black colour. Does anyone have this colour and if so can you post some pics/ give your opinion? Does it look good or is it cheap looking?

Thanks

Hmm

Maybe now is the time to add to my lenses. I have been wondering about a Tamron 17-50 and a 55-300 for a while. I have also been considering a K-3 for a while as well. hmmmmm

---------- Post added 06-28-14 at 10:51 PM ----------

That sounds like a good idea. The 16-50 is perhaps out of my price range for one lens but I have been considering something to replace the kit lens, like the Tamron equivalent

Thanks Ron and Ross.

I'll perhaps stick with my 40mm F2.8 then. It is very fast to focus so will prob be ideal. The 50mm F1.8 is not fast to focus and is also very noisy. The quality of the 40mm is much better as well.

Thanks. I've not really shot any cycling before. Would you think c. 50mm on the short end would be too long? I don't really want to have to change lenses.

I do have a Nikon D70s as well with kit lens so I guess I could use this also if I need something shorter but would be reluctant to

Hi

I'm going to see the Tour de France in Yorkshire next weekend and was thinking of getting a new lens for it. I have a K-r and the current lenses I have are:

Sigma 8-16mm
18-55mm kit lens
40mm f2.8 xs
50mm f1.8

various MF lenses

I don't have a specific budget in mind but I'm not looking at the ~ £1000 lenses. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks

Here's one example:

Used Pentax KR +18-55 DAII | London Camera Exchange - Gloucester

£249. When I bought mine it was £399 so that's fairly expensive. I have seen them for over the £300 mark as well. It's a good camera but it makes no financial sense to buy one unless it is cheaper than that.

Ye, any K-r's available will be whatever stock is left behind and they are just selling off. I'm seeing a lot of secondhand K-r's in camera shops now so it seems a fair number of people are/ have upgraded.

Thanks. It was the 50 - 200mm but I can do a search on that site. I was also looking for some more user reviews as there doesn't seem to be too much out there. What I have seen on Flickr groups the lens seems good quality.

Does anyone here have the Sigma 50 - 200mm F4 - 5.6? If so what is your opinion of it? Would you recommend it? There don't seem to be any lens clubs for it or anything in the sample database I can see.

Hi

I happened to spot this lens online for what seems a good price. Does anyone have it and if so is it a good lens. On the Lens Review Database there seems to be relatively few reviews.

Would I be better getting this or the Pentax WR version? They tend to go for roughly the same second-hand.

Thanks

Looks good. Do you find the K-3 makes the most of the lens quality? E.g. is there any difference between that and another camera (assuming you have used it with another one).

As far as I know the closest thing is pk tether which only works using a USB port on a laptop or desktop. The other option is IR. I've been trying to find an option similar to flucard or other tethering but there is none available to my knowledge.

Supported Pentax models:

Pentax K30, K20D, K10D, K5, K5-IIs, K7, Super, K100D, D110D, *ist Ds2, +ist D, *ist Ds, *ist, *ist DL, 645D

Hi

Does anyone use one of the wireless cards with their K-r and if so what functions are available with it. I really like the idea of using the card to control the camera as with the K-3. Is there any way to do a similar thing with the K-r or are we limited to just downloading photos wirelessly?

Thanks

The K-r is a great camera, and I love mine. But for that price and given the age of the K-r if you shop around you should be able to get a K-30 for the same price.

Recommendation for a smart phone...

Cheers for all your replies.

I decided on a Nexus 5 and have ordered one (black, 32 GB). I wanted a sim-free phone and this was the best option in my budget. I guess it's a trade off and it doesn't have some things I wanted. BGut I wasn't prepared to sacrifice the warranty and/ or pay the extra £150 - 200 for them.

Can anyone with a Nexus 5 recommend a wallet style case (one that has a folding part to cover the screen? Also can anyone recommend a wireless battery/ charger?

Thanks
