I want to thank all those who helped me pick pictures for submission for a juried local exhibition, two of my four submittals (max allowed for any one photographer) were selected. I'm attaching below, but I also want to thank you for comments, which I listened too, including toning down my saturation. I hope I represented Pentaxonians well in this exhibition.

My camera club is having a juried exhibition. As one of only 2 Pentax owners in the clubs sea of Nikon and Canon users I'd like to represent Pentax users in as good a light as possible. I'd like the forums thoughts as to which of 9 of my photo's I like the best are the 4 best (max allowed) to submit. All comments, positive or negative are appreciated.

Our camera club will be selecting photo's for a local exhibition, being only one of two members using a Pentax cameras (K-10 & K-7) in a sea of Nikon and Canon owners I'd like to do make a good showing for those of using Pentax and would appreciate some help in choosing 4 (the max allowed) for the juried selection. I've chosen 9 I like and would appreciate thoughts on which 4 people think are the strongest.

To all - Please ignore this post as I reposted this later with the correct number of photo's and to the correct forum. Thanks

Here are two from my Florida trip, same place, one a horizontal shot, the other vertical. Taken during the same trip where I used my Sigma 100-300, pictures posted, coincedently, in post right after yours.

Sigma 100-300mm F4 +2TC Picture results

This is for everyone who helped me in deciding which way to go in selecting a telephoto for wildlife photo's.

I'm attaching photo's I took in Florida with a Pentax K7 using my new Sigma 100-300 f4 telephoto with and without the Sigma 2xTC attachment. The first three photo's where taken at around 500 - 600mm using the Sigma 2 TC, in all cases a tripod was used. The other two were taken at around 300mm with the camera being hand held.

I'll leave to each of you to judge the photo's by yourselves, but I found that a tripod makes using the 2TC converter easier and is almost a necessity. However, without the 2TC the lens can be hand held nicely but it takes some getting used to when using for panning birds in flight. Also, the 100-300mm could be used for several hours at a time without any fatigue, or, without it becoming too heavy to hold. Lastly, this is a fine lens and I would recommend it without hesitation.

Sigma 50-500mm vs 150-500mm or Pentax DA 55-300mm with 1.4 TC?

To clarify, I have a DA* 50-135 which is my walk around lens, and whose optics I love. If I use it with the 1.4 TC I can only go to 189 at f4. With the 100-300 I'm effectively now covered the 135 - 300 range at f4 without using a TC. For longer shots, I will first give the tamy 1.4 TC a "bash" to see how it works. I'll probably spring for the 2X Sigma TC when my bank account is refurbished so I can then go as far as 600, and anything in between. We're heading to Florida for the holidays, and if I have any shots with either combination which meet the quality of what I've seen in the forum I'll post them when we get back.

Thanks to all, I decided to go with the Sigma 100 - 300 + TC option. I did consider the DA* 300 option but felt the versatility of having a zoom was important to me. I also want to let all of you know that as newbe your comments and advise not only helped me make my decision but also added to my understanding of what needed to be taken into consideration. I learned that there is no "perfect" choice, but rather it's a choice about what is best based on one's own needs and priorities. Thanks Again to all.

Thanks to all, I'm leaning to the Sigma 100 - 300 F4 option, in part because it's quicker, & from Mikes shots of the moon, and other tests, it seems to give sharper images. But to save some $, I'm curious as to Oggy's question, how would it match up with my Tamy 1.4 TC?

Mike,

First let me say I've seen your photo's both in this forum and on the Pentax Website and I am in awe of your work and thus give great credence to your thoughts. I was concerned as to the sharpness of both Sigma lenses, although I was leaning toward the 50-500 based on some of your previous posts. comparative testing on the web, and shots you took at an Airshow.

Since you feel that the Sigma DG EX 100-300 with the matched Sigma TC is the best way to go, do you also feel that that the Sigma EX 100-300 is superior to the Pentax DA 55-300mm? in which case I might sell the 55-300 to help pay for the new lenses. Thanks

I'm looking to add a longer zoom to my K-7 for wildlife and bird photo's and am considering both the Sigma 50-500 and 150-500 (difference in price is only around $75). Reviews on the web seem mixed as to which is better in the 500 range. I already have a Pentax DA 55-300 and can use it with a Tamron 1.4 TC, so I can go to 420mm. Any thoughts or first hand experiences? Thanks

Pentax 55- 135 f2.8 Vs. Tamron 70 -200 f2.8

Thanks for everyone's comments all of you helped me di a better job at looking at what my real needs were and I'll be going with the 50 - 135 Pentax. With my current Tamron 17- 50 f2.8 it'll give me good coverage at fast apertures over a range where I shot most of my photo's.

Pentax 55- 135 f2.8 Vs. Tamron 70 -200 f2.8

Well clearly there are a lot of options, but thinking back to my last vacation, most of my shots were with the 17-50 or 18 - 250 Tamron's, and the 70 - 300 only came out once. Since I just bought the new K-7 (which I think is great) brecklundin's comments on having a compatible waterproof lens makes sense, I guess I'm leaning more toward the 50 - 135 now, and spring for a good fixed 200 mm or 300mm down the road. But who knows, by tomorrow there might be some more insights to push me the other way, but either way all of you have helped me sort out what makes the most sense for me now. Thanks

Pentax 55- 135 f2.8 Vs. Tamron 70 -200 f2.8

I mostly shoot landscapes and like wide angle shots, but I will do indoor portraits, close-ups and am moving into panarama's. I only started being serious about my phtography about 18 monhts ago, and had mostly been using a Tamron 18-250 as my walk around lense, but I'm trying to upgrade my lenses, especially with faster lenses and sharper optics. I now use a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 for a lot of my shots. The 70 - 300 has been disappointing and the 18-250 is still being used, so I have a back-up for longer FL if I go with the Pentax. Part of the Pentax appeal is that it is a Pentax and my experiance with third party lenses is that the performance and quality do vary. If I went with the 50-135 I would probably look to get a fixed 200mm or 300 mm down the road to do wildlife as well. Long answer to a short question.

I'm looking to go to a faster and sharper lense then the Tamron 70 -300 I now use, which I find is too soft. Has anyone experiance with both the Pentax and Tamron f2.8"s, I'm particularly interested in their focusing as I've read negatives about both, also how do their sharpness compare? I use a Tamron 90MM f2.8 for Macro's, which is great, so Macro isn't an issue. BY the way, I noticed I mis-typed the Pentax, its 50 - 135, not 55, no insult to current owners intended. Thanks
