Wow, what a fantastically positive story! :-D Things do just come together perfectly like that once in a blue moon (if you'll excuse the pun ;-)) and isn't it just wonderful when they do! Great pic, am sure you will me holding onto that one in your collection!

Really happy you enjoyed them Rupert! It is a great lens - if they made an 18-300 with the same IQ and build quality, it would be the only lens I'd need most of the time!... except maybe a macro and fish-eye... and a super telephoto prime... and a short prime... and maybe a... who am I kidding, one lens is NEVER enough! hihi! :-)

Well written - a true horror story, with a happy, heartwarming ending.
I would have been completely distraught - I've never had the best of luck and I would never have seen my camera again, I'm sure. Rather oddly perhaps, I have a panic/rape alarm rigged to my bag via a cord that is attached to my clothing, so if it gets left behind, I'd know straight away with ear-piercing certainty!

I'm glad you like! The 18-135 is a great lens, really versatile, well made and a joy to use - it doesn't quite have the range that I would like, but that's what I have my non WR 55-300mm for.
I've only had this camera since the end of June, so I'm sure it won't take you long to get some really nice snaps and I'm sure you are producing some great stuff already! :-D

The lens was a steal! I had just lost out on an auction for the same lens, which ended at about £32 including postage, as I'd forgotten to stick in a high limit - found this straight after and put in a best offer for £26, which was accepted :-)
Can't wait to experiment with it more!

The bokeh on this lens is absolutely fantastic! It can be a little tough sometimes to get the focus just right on subjects that are a few meters away, but when you hit the sweet spot, it's really really nice :-)

I worked in an Optometrists, selling cameras, telescopes and Swarovski & Leica binos and spotting scopes about 6 or 7 years ago now - the Sigma lenses we had were remarkably good then, I really enjoyed using them, but they were very plasticy, which is likely why they felt so comparably light to me. We did sell a lot less of them than the manufacturer lenses, but the EX zooms (I think that's what they were) sold fairly well overall. My memory is hazy though, I did drink a lot back then ;-)

Re the macro lens - I think a great lens can often be let down by a photographer who can't quite utilize it to it's full potential. I've no doubt that all the lenses mentioned above could produce great photos in the right hands, so for me at least, it would come down to a mix of affordability, ruggedness (build quality) and resale value. If a really cheap lens can do a reasonable job it would certainly be a starting point, if only for experimentation before investing in a more robust unit.
When I used to sell cameras in Glasgow, we sold Sigma lenses alongside the body brands and they were very good, but the less expensive units did often feel a little fragile and alarmingly light at times. The optical quality was generally excellent and gave very similar IQ to more expensive manufacturer lenses.
I would certainly consider a used Sigma, as a stepping stone (who knows, might even stick to it!) but I do prefer the solid build quality of the all metal Pentax lenses on the whole.

Yes, this approach works well for me too, most of the time :-) I am going to try and get some high DOF shots with the new manual 50mm 1.7 I just got in the post (£26 off ebay and in really good condition!) - I just took some shots of the bees in the garden, set it to closest focus and snapped away, rather impressed, though will take some time getting used to the DOF at 1.7 as the area of focus is so tiny.
