View finder looks flushed to the back of the flip screen.

Wondering if that could be uncomfortable.

Of course Pentax could be quite perverse and release a DA 70-200/2.8.

Limit shutter speed with flash

Hi all,

I have a KX. Whilst the camera is quite good, I need some advice regarding shutter speeds and flash.

I find that if I want to take a flash photo at night (using the popup flash in the camera) and I am in the Av mode, the camera would choose very slow shutter speeds. eg; 1/15, 1/30 etc.

Is there a way to change the behaviour so that the speeds do not drop too low for hand held flash photography?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

if the DA 21 was a bit cheaper - they may be able to add a faster version DA 21/1.8 or something to the line up - then you have a choice, something a bit cheaper and smaller, or pay a bit more to get more speed and extra features.

Just looking at australian prices for da limited lenses, and it occurred to me that the DA 21 seems to be over priced. (current A$699 on the australian pentax store)

It would seem that it would be more appropriate if it were priced in the same ball park as the DA 40 (A$499) .

Not sure what you guys think?

How Far Is Pentax From Becoming A Major Player In APS-C?

Hi, in terms of equipment I think Pentax have most of the basis covered. The most glaring gaps as I see it is:

For lenses
1) Need a 70-200/2.8
2) A fast 24 or 18 prime ( f 1.4 or similar)
3) 17-70/4 probably needs to be WR and start a little bit wider.

Rightly or wrongly, people seem to equate a fast lense as being a good lense. So by having a smaller number of fast lenses in the line up, many people will equate that the lense line up as being weak.

For bodies

The K500/K50 bodies are just lacking a little bit of something to grab the imagination and wallets of the consumer market. Maybe they need just that something extra, eg: built in wifi, better movie mode, more mega pixles and a better looking body design. Actually I think it is more important for Pentax to get the K50 level camera right and selling well. This is probably where the profits are and where the volume will be.

I wonder if HD Versions of the da* with updated focus motors will be announced as well. After all why release a camera with a fast AF system only to be hamstrung by lenses with slow AF motors?

Ooohhhh this is interesting. So the k3 will cost approx twice as much as a k5, that puts it at over $1600 given current street prices. That indicates the k3 will be in Canon 7d territory in terms of market position.

New Camera/s by Christmas

The year is not out yet. I think we need to wait for a few more weeks. I don't think nikon or canon have made their product announcement s yet. As a guess Pentax, if they have anything to announce will do so a week or two after canon nikon.

I think the last big canon announcement was the 70d a month or so ago so canon still has time to release something else before xmas. Same with nikon.

Doesn't give any indication if this will be a pentax related announcement. It could just as easily be for compact cameras, or anything else really. It is a consumer electronics show afterall.

I am very interested in the new flashes however just reading through the press release on dpreview.com it appears as though the af assist light is achieved by using the video light.
Most other flashes that I am aware of uses a red led for the same purpose. The red led af assist is very discrete whereas I a white video light for af assist may be much more distracting.

Agree that with these announcements signal a new apsc is definitely on the way. However its still too soon to discount a full frame. They may hold back the announcements to when the body is announced.

This is an excellent point. We must not forget that Pentax have not been afraid to enter niche markets eg 645d or to try something a bit differnt and quirky eg q series.

I agree that Pentax needs to offer an upgrade path to their existing high end APS customers. If the new camera is nothing more than a K 5 but with a full frame sensor, would that be enough of an upgrade?

To go higher end than that I think Pentax would really be struggling to attract buyers. People looking for cameras in that higher price range would mostly be pros or enthusiasts. The pros need lenses, professional support services, a whole range of flash lights etc... so they would most likely not go for it. Enthusiasts would find it hard to go past the price of the D600 and the lense range on offer at both Canon and Nikon camps.

That leaves the loyal Pentax users wanting to go full frame. But is that a big enough market to introduce a expensive camera into?

I agree that I dont thino Pentax would try to compete head to head with the big guys in the pro or semi pro marlet. They will most likely try to find a different market niche. Thats why I think tbe full frame when it does arrive could be something like a K 50 but with a larger sensor. Thats why I dont think they will offer constant 2.8 zooms up front perhaps something more consumer orientated.

Some interesting replies - I suspect that when the full frame camera is released, it could likely be a full frame k50 in which case the lenses will be more consumer than enthusiastic. My list would be 24-90, 70-300 and a 28-200.

However if a semi pro full frame is what gets realesed than most likely be 24-70/2.8 70-210 and a 100-400.

Hi there,

When (not if) the new full frame is launched, it will probably also be launched alongside with 2 or 3 brand spanking new DFA lenses.

The lenses available for any new camera, if chosen wisely, will add greatly to the appeal of the system. For example Olympus e-1 launched with three mid priced zooms, the Fuji X-system launched with three primes. In both cases, the lenses added to the appeal to and complimented the camera.

So the question is, if Pentax were to launch the full frame with 2 or 3 new lenses - what should they be?

Sigma 17-70 apperture

Good day from down under,

I'm looking for a faster mid-range zoom to supplement my Sigma 18-200 . This will mainly for in door photography, family gatherings and the like.

While I've enjoyed the 18-200 it's quite slow. ie: it's about f4 at 20mm and is already f5.6 at approx 60mm. And my Kx sometimes struggles with the autofocus.

The new sigma 17-70/2.8-4 seems quite interesting and may fit the bill for what I am looking for. The reviews that I have seen are universally positive, got a wide zoom range and is not too expensive.

However, does anyone know what are the maximum apertures at various points in it's zoom range?

Are there other affordable (< $600) zoom lenses that could be recommended for indoor shooting?

Cheers

Hello, I started out on old Pentax film cameras (a Super A and a MX) when I first got introduced to photography about 10 years ago. I have owned a KX for the last four years and am still having lots of fun with it.
