Tripod help

at this budget, any will do. go to a store and just pick one. or even better, get a cheap one used.
it isn't worth your time to pick the best cheap tripod for "some shots". get a cheap one and use that for the time being. if you find it to lack in certain respects you'll have a better idea what your needs are. i paid 200 usd for a manfrotto 055xprob which weighs 2.4kg without a head, about 3 with. paid another 50 for a used head. i fully expect it to last 20+ years and be useful for any task or gear i'll ever use, but who knows what you want to shoot in two years. if you find that a tripod is a burden to carry (and it is) maybe a monopod will do. if your cheapo-tripod sways in the wind (and it will) you'll know you want a sturdy one (like me). decent tripods are expensive, good ones unaffordable. there is no good recommendation and a disposable, cheap thing a good place to begin.

looks like a reliable source :)

i‘m too lazy to look it up myself, with whom does Getty make their contracts? The Person making the pictures or the people depicted? Wasn‘t it the photographer who sold the picture? Wouldn‘t that make her liable? I do not believe, that the government agency can be held liable. Surely the duty to ascertain the proper copyrights lie with the commercial entity dealing in copyrights.

i did not say that. being afraid of people who are hiv positive, thinking they are lose and/or careless were the attitudes i referred to when using the three terms.

no, that‘s not what i‘m saying, as that is not what i have said. assuming things that are irrational, unnecessary and unacceptable are the reasons to use the terms bigot, uneducated and idiot. not the act of assuming something different from me. especially as all i did was to realize she is a person with a job, the one thing we all agree on.

you purposefully left out uneducated, which very well could stand alone to explain all described behaviour. i‘m aware that you did that because you felt insulted, i apologize for that. that was not my intent.
i only indicated my place of residence to make clear that i do not know how people knowing about someone being hiv positive impacts one life in places i have never been, like spain or new york state. none of the bad things you describe seem realistic to me, here, in my experience. that was the point.
and lastly, being "afraid" of people with hiv, assuming they are "lose" or "simply careless"… none of that is rational, necessary or acceptable behaviour. i‘m at a loss how to refer to such people.

this seems to be a key point. seeing someone depicted in an ad like this would automatically make me assume that she is just a model, that this is stock photography. i remember campaigns like this, but then her name would be depicted as well. "eve, 24. programmer, likes to ski, four brothers. hiv positive." something like that.

no actually, this makes it much worse. there is a difference between hiv and aids, the fictional character depicted, let‘s call her eve, does not have a disease. she‘s just hiv positive. the disease resulting from it most of the time indeed is chronic, further spread is easy to prevent, quality of life is often hardly affected but it is almost always fatal.
there is no need for shouting, i know having a disease is bad, the point we are discussing is people knowing about it.

she has a medical condition which should not have any impact on her reputation whatsoever. the chances of getting an infectious disease do not correlate with character in any way, shape or form. this is where hiv is fundamentally different from, let‘s say, drunk driving, which is an action, a behaviour, a choice. there is no choice in infection.

bigots, uneducated and idiots might jump to conclusions and treat her badly? that is hard to refute, as i do not know where you live. where i live, western europe, city, the attitudes you describe are from a bygone era, like the mid to late nighties. and still back then they would be attitudes of bigots, uneducated and idiots.

if you use "first responder" to refer to healthcare professionals, then no. they would still treat her. if you mean passers-by, that is possible, yes. the chances of that would probably be negligible, though.

as a sidenote, i do understand the ad itself right, in that many of the things you imagine are actually illegal in new york state?

please look up "ad hominem". exchanging me for ms.nolan is not possible, as i‘m not a model and would never let someone photograph me and make the pictures available where getty could find them. and, more importantly, exchanging me for eve would not make any difference to my argument.

two things. first, ad campaigns use stock photos? i‘m shocked. being getty and using pictures without paying for them ("release for commercial use") is a different matter, one that should be easy to resolve though.
but, and here you lost me, how would this particular use "bring discredit upon" the model or cause her to "suffer indignity"? i don‘t get that argument.

the wiggle you can see on the front element if you draw guidelines between the "m" on the left and the "3" on the right and the "3" on the top and the "2" on the bottom, that‘s fungus, is it not? the ebay description reads: "gebrauch, zustand in Ordnung"; gebraucht (including its t) means used, zustand is condition and in ordnung, well, my dictionary offers me fine, o.k. and allright, but also groovy, shipshape and hunky-dory. take your pick. and, before you ask, no worldwide shipping.

people, if all you want is to use your spotmatics, why not use one of these new digital converters? you know, were you unroll a flexible sensor out of a standard sized 135 cassette which also includes all the necessary electronics and power. you load the sensor just like you would load regular film. no storage, uses wifi. wasn‘t there a new version presented at ifa yesterday? 24 mp and >1/9000 electronic shutter? or the day before?

The mount is called K-Mount, Pentax, PK or P/K. Pentax alone could also refer to the deprecated M42 screwmount, so look for the K.

My local store actually had them cheaper than ebay. (until i bought 10 at once).

To be sure, and to educate us, it‘s probably best to post some pics of your lens (incl. front element and mount.) if it is indeed a k-mount, it will not only fit all of pentaxes dslrs, but also the mirrorless K-01.

How does one answer?

i highly doubt this. there are in absolute numbers; but in terms of percentages it will be a normal distribution. statistically the only reason for it to be otherwise would be, that the number of pentax owners is so small, that small changes have a disproportionate effect, i.e. something effects ten people out a population of 100 or one of 100,000. even if it were true, frankly you would have no way of knowing it. you‘d need data on motivations and circumstances of hundreds or thousands of people.
i only got my own fab fifty not two months ago. tbh, the few times i saw other people with dslrs, i tried to glimpse what brand they carried. this thread has convinced me of the error of my ways :)
from now on, when i see another dslr, i‘ll ignore the brand and look for primes vs. zooms, or round vs. petals.

(Nearly) Feature-Complete Starter Kit

my idea was to wait with an introductory post until i have everything a beginner could possibly need, an all-round-kit. unfortunately, i ran out of money.

tl;dr beginner lists everything he bought and tells a heart-throbbing story

the only camera i ever owned was a cheap, blue, all-plastic fix-focus, received in a magazine promotion. i occasionally wasted some pictures (or films) trying to take pictures of the sky or lightning, but never was interested in photography. never knew someone who was, either. my then gf had the usual series of cheap p&s and then someday decided she wanted a proper camera. i was sent to select one and chose the K-r, as it was the best available and because Pentax was the smallest brand. after seeing the pictures even i could take with a dslr, using anything else seemed like such a waste.
being deprived of the K-r i read something about the K-30. i basically knew immediately that i wanted one. in white. (wasn't allowed to buy the K-r in white.) then i was distracted for some time and only revisited the idea a few months later. i needed a new hobby and suddenly photography seemed like the perfect choice. problem was, i couldn't afford the camera. unfortunately by then, my mind had been made up. so i looked at loans, found it interesting, told my parents about it. my parents, hmm. didn't my father once own a real camera? oh yes he did. my older brother took it many years ago. but, alas, it still exists and he does not need it. so two days later, my dad hands me an MX, in, so far as i can tell, perfect working order. came with a Tokina 35-105 and a "Pentax 10 Million" commemorative strap. bought from a neighbor sometime around 1985 for 500 deutschmarks (which is like a gazillion dollars in todays money). so, come next monday i'm gonna buy some 35mm film and learn photography the hard way while i save up the cash to buy a dslr. nice.
the very next day, my father calls: "you at home?" sure, why? then he brings me a white K-50 with the 18-135 WR. never looked back, take photos practically everday, take the camera everywhere. and every day, i look at the pictures i took and smile.

any way to determine the construction dates on these lenses? maybe they don't store well. or one of the boxes they were shipped in was mishandled?

i have two M50s here that work flawlessly. i have succesfully convincend myself that lenses will last forever, unless dropped. and now you people want to convince me that my brand new 18-135 will someday not work? no, no.
statistically, this sample is too small to draw any conclusions from. i will use all my lenses, until i replace them with the 5-500, 1.7 pancake.

well, not this one. 113.09usd (+p&p) two days ago. the next one to go will be even cheaper *fingers crossed*.

about the "above 200mm" part, isn't that the weak spot of the affordable lenses?
